Electron microscopy of myenteric nevrves in Hirschsprung's disease and in normal bowel.

The ultrastructure of the myenteric nerves of colon and rectum removed from 10 children with Hirschsprung's disease has been studied and compared with normal infant bowel. Distal aganglionic (Hirschsprung) bowel often showed a rich supply of nerves within the muscle layers and there was no obvious morphological abnormality of constituent axons. The numbers of nerves diminished as more proximal parts of the bowel were examined and the fewest nerves were found where ganglia first appeared. These ganglia were similar in structure to the ganglia of normal bowel, and a striking feature of them all

Morphological study of the lingual papillae in the fruit bat (Rousettus amplexicaudatus) by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy.

This study was carried on the tongues of ten normal, healthy and adult fruit bats (Rousettus amplexicaudatus, also known as the nyap biasa bat) in Yogyakarta, Java Island, Indonesia. The tongue was protrusible, elongated and flat with a rounded apex, and its width and thickness increased gradually towards to lingual root. There were two main types of lingual papillae, mechanical (filiform) and gustatory (fungiform and circumvallate). The tongue was divided into three parts (apex, corpus and radix), and then, each part was subdivided into three regions (two lateral regions and a median region).

Long-term evaluation of bone-titanium interface in rat tibiae using light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and image processing.

We conducted a 2-year histologic and histometric evaluation of the tibial bone-titanium (Ti) implant interface in male rats. Thirty male 6-week-old rats were used in this study. They were divided into two groups: 15 for day 28 and 15 for day 730. Microscopic observation at day 28 revealed that the newly formed bone around the implant almost surrounded the implant, but fibroblastlike cells were interposed in some histologic sections. At day 730, in contrast, such cells were rarely seen, and the bone around the implant presented a lamellar structure. Transmission electron microscopic observation

Scrape cytology of oral pemphigus. Report of a case with immunocytochemistry and light, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy.

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris is a disseminated disease of the skin and mucous membranes characterized by recurrent vesicular and bullous lesions due to the autoantigen belonging to the cadherin type of cell adhesion molecules. The presence of acantholysis associated with immunoglobulins in the intercellular spaces and on the cell membrane are diagnostic features. However, the appearance of smears from the oral cavity by scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) study as well as immunocytochemistry of cadherin does not appear to have been previously reported. CASE: A 67-year

Functionalization of a nanostructured hydroxyapatite with Cu(II) compounds as a pesticide: in situ transmission electron microscopy and environmental scanning electron microscopy observations of treated Vitis vinifera L. leaves.

BACKGROUND: The present study evaluated a biocompatible material for plant protection with the aim of reducing the amount of active substance applied. We used a synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) that has been studied extensively as a consequence of its bioactivity and biocompatibility. An aggregation between HA nanoparticles and four Cu(II) compounds applied to Vitis vinifera L. leaves as a pesticide was studied. Formulations were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electron microscopy and applied in planta to verify particle aggregation and efficiency in c

Comparison of Sample Preparation Techniques for Inspection of Leaf Epidermises Using Light Microscopy and Scanning Electronic Microscopy.

The micro-morphology of leaf epidermises is valuable for the study of leaf development and function, as well as the classification of plant species. There have been few studies comparing different preparation and imaging methods for visualizing the leaf epidermis. Here, four specimen preparation methods were used to investigate the leaf epidermis morphology of Arabidopsis, radish, cucumber, wheat, rice, and maize, under an inverted basic light microscope (LM), a laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM), or a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Optical microscope specimens were obtained using

[The neurocytes of the caudal part of the tuberomamillary nucleus in Ovis aries L. (light microscopy and electron microscopy studies)].

The neurons of the pars caudalis nuclei tuberomammillaris (pc-NTM) were studed light-microscopically and electron-microscopically in sheep and rams of Merino breed. In our study we observed: In the regarded neural nucleus, there is the majority of the great neurons (up to 60 microns in diameter) rich in the NISSL's bodies. When stained with the cresyl violet, the NISSL's substance is apparently stored mainly in peripheral area of the cell body and in the distant parts of numerous protoplasmic processes, what evokes an impression of the "jagged" surface of these cells. After staining with paral

Ultrastructure of dopaminergic varicosities revealed by cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy.

Dopaminergic neurons are fundamental in governing motivation, movement, and many aspects of cognition. The targeted modulation of dopaminergic signaling serves as a cornerstone in developing therapeutic interventions for conditions such as Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and addiction. Despite the pivotal role of dopaminergic neurons, the ultrastructure of dopaminergic synapses remains poorly understood. Here, we establish and utilize a cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy process to investigate the micro/nanoscale architecture and organelle content of dopaminergic varicosities.

From developer to microscopist: Improving the accessibility of volume electron microscopy software.

To maximise insight from today's high throughput microscopy experiments, it is essential for a microscopist to familiarise themselves with the latest analysis software and undertake appropriate training. This can be challenging, however, due to the rapid development of software in the field, which often has complex installation steps and requires computational resources or storage beyond the capacity of personal computers. Cloud platforms running software containers remove these barriers, particularly when the platform is customised to specific end-user needs. We have developed a platform for

Digging Deep into Alzheimer Disease: How Electron Microscopy Helps Elucidating Its Pathogenesis.

Alzheimer disease (AD), first described by Alzheimer and Perusini in the early twentieth century, is a devastating neurodegenerative disorder without a definitive cure. Unraveling the subcellular alterations underlying AD is essential to elucidate disease mechanisms, track progression, link cellular abnormalities to functional deficits, and develop therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing, slowing or reverting the disease course. Electron microscopy (EM) has been pivotal in this field since the 1960s, when Terry and Kidd characterized the ultrastructure of amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposits and pair

Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy Visualization of Helicobacter pylori in Human Saliva.

Helicobacter pylori is a Class I carcinogen that primarily colonizes the gastric mucosa. However, its presence in the oral cavity remains poorly characterized, particularly at the ultrastructural level. Saliva represents a practical, noninvasive oral specimen, yet previous reports have relied on indirect detection methods with limited morphological confirmation. In this study, we aimed to visualize H. pylori in human saliva using correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM). Unstimulated saliva samples were collected from 36 patients and immunostained with a monoclonal anti-H. pylori antib
