Measuring Sarcopenia Severity in Older Adults and the Value of Effective Interventions.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the severity and long-term health and economic consequences of sarcopenia. We developed a sarcopenia index to measure severity in older Americans and estimated the long-term societal benefits generated by effective interventions to mitigate severity. DESIGN: Using a micro-simulation model, we quantified the potential societal value generated in the US in 2010-2040 by reductions in sarcopenia severity in older adults. All analyses were performed in Stata and SAS. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Secondary data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surve

A review in gait rehabilitation devices and applied control techniques.

PURPOSE: The aim of this review is to analyse the different existing technologies for gait rehabilitation, focusing mainly in robotic devices. Those robots help the patient to recover a lost function due to neurological gait disorders, accidents or after injury. Besides, they facilitate the identification of normal and abnormal features by registering muscle activity providing the doctor important data where he can observe the evolution of the patient. METHOD: A deep literature review was realized using selected keywords considering not only the most common medical and engineering databases,

Improving transfer task practices used with air travelers with mobility impairments: a systematic literature review.

Manual lifting in healthcare and air transportation is a high-risk activity and a primary cause of musculoskeletal injuries for workers who are required to provide transfer assistance to people with mobility impairments. In the healthcare industry, safe patient-handling programs and policies are accepted as effective ways to prevent worker injury and to improve patient safety. We reviewed evidence-based studies and several websites for disability groups and the airline industry. Seven studies found significant improvements in musculoskeletal comfort levels and declines in musculoskeletal injur

Re-embodiment: incorporation through embodied learning of wheelchair skills.

In this article, the notion of re-embodiment is developed to include the ways that rearrangement and renewals of body schema take place in rehabilitation. More specifically, the embodied learning process of acquiring wheelchair skills serves as a starting point for fleshing out a phenomenological understanding of incorporation of assistive devices. By drawing on the work of Merleau-Ponty, the reciprocal relation between acquisition habits and incorporation of instruments is explored in relation to the learning of wheelchair skills. On the basis of this, it is argued that through learning to ma

[Osteomalacia revealing Sjögren's syndrome: a case report].

INTRODUCTION: The most common renal disease in Sjögren's syndrome is tubulo-interstitial nephritis, responsible for tubular acidosis in around 20 % of patients. Osteomalacia exceptionally occurs as the first manifestation of a renal tubule disorder due to a Sjögren's syndrome. EXEGESIS: We report a case of a 20-year-old woman with tubular acidosis induced osteomalacia secondary to primary Sjögren's syndrome. Improvement was obtained with bicarbonates, vitamin D, calcium and high-dose steroid therapy. CONCLUSION: During Sjögren's syndrome, osteomalacia can complicate the distal renal tubular

Leptin concentration and risk of impaired physical function in older adults: the Seniors-ENRICA cohort.

BACKGROUND: leptin resistance, which may develop during the ageing process, stimulates the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and insulin resistance that could impair the muscle function. However, the role of leptin on physical functioning among older adults has not yet been elucidated. OBJECTIVE: to examine the association between serum leptin levels and physical function impairment in older adults. DESIGN AND SETTING: prospective study of 1,556 individuals 60 years and older from the Seniors-ENRICA cohort, who were free of physical function limitation at baseline. MAIN OUTCOME MEASU

A Step in the Right Direction: Assessing Prosthetic Satisfaction and Mobility in Lower-Limb Amputees With Osseointegration.

PURPOSE: Periprosthetic pain and poor fit can impair quality of life in amputees with socket-based prostheses. Osseointegration (OI) is a novel alternative to socket prostheses, using a titanium rod implanted into the residual limb. Nerve and soft-tissue reconstruction can be done concurrently by a plastic surgeon to reduce pain and improve comfort. This study evaluated satisfaction and mobility limitations in lower-limb amputees with OI prostheses. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey including patients who received lower-limb OI implants at our institution. Collected demographics incl…

Effect of chest and abdominal wall mobility and respiratory muscle strength on forced vital capacity in older adults.

This study investigated by sex the effect of chest and abdominal wall mobility and respiratory muscle strength on forced vital capacity (FVC) in older adults. FVC, respiratory muscle strength, and chest and abdominal wall mobility were assessed in 154 community-dwelling older adults. As an index of the chest and abdominal wall mobility, chest (upper and lower chest) and total (upper chest, lower chest, and abdomen) scale values were measured using the breathing movement scale. Subjects with a restrictive spirometric pattern showed significantly lower chest and total scale values in both sexes,

Becoming Bedridden and Being Bedridden: Implications for Nursing and Care for Older People in Long-Term Care: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of individuals aged 60 and older will rely on healthcare services, particularly due to increased physical limitations and mobility restrictions. This implies an increase in permanently immobile, often bedridden people who require targeted care. Mobility impairments progress gradually, leading to loss of autonomy and self-care skills, physical decline, functional deterioration, disability, etc. This review synthesises research findings on the implications of becoming and being bedridden for nursing care of older people in long-term care. OBJECTIVES: The aim of

Effects of Group Exercise on Motor Function and Mobility for Parkinson Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Parkinson disease (PD) is associated with a predictable decline in motor function and mobility that is commonly managed with exercise. There is a limited understanding of the effects of group exercise compared to individual exercise (IE) and usual care (UC) on motor function and mobility. Our purpose was to investigate the effects of group exercise compared to IE and UC on motor function and mobility for people with PD. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed with randomized control trials that investigated the effects of group compared with IE and UC on motor

Laboratory-assessed gait cycle entropy for classifying walking limitations among community-dwelling older adults.

Among older people, walking difficulty results from actual and perceived declines in physical capacities and environmental requirements for walking. We investigated whether the physiological complexity of the gait cycle covaries with experience of walking difficulty. Walking difficulty, gait speed, and gait cycle complexity were evaluated among 702 community-dwelling older people aged 75, 80, and 85 years who took part in the six-minute walking test in the research laboratory. Walking difficulty for 500 m was self-reported. Complexity was quantified as trunk acceleration multiscale entropy dur
