The associations between stress perception, psychological flexibility, and sleep quality among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus: A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition associated with genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors, leading to hyperglycemia and complications, including psychological stress and poor sleep quality. The role of psychological flexibility in regulating stress and improving sleep in T2DM patients is under-researched. OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationships between stress perception, psychological flexibility, and sleep quality in T2DM patients and the mediating role of psychological flexibility. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 300 T2DM patients from two hospitals in

Childhood psychological abuse and neglect impair adolescent social-emotional competence: a network analysis with mediation.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has demonstrated that childhood psychological abuse and neglect can substantially hinder the development of adolescents' social-emotional competence. Furthermore, basic psychological needs mediate the relationship between them. However, no research has explored how childhood psychological abuse and neglect affect the development of adolescents' social-emotional competence by damaging basic psychological needs. METHODS: Cross-sectional network analysis and a mediation model were applied to data from 987 Chinese high school students (mean age = 16.38). Validated sc

Flourishing in chronic disease care: a narrative review and proposed conceptual framework.

The growing burden of chronic diseases has increased interest in both psychological distress and positive psychological functioning among people living with chronic conditions. In this context, flourishing may be understood as the capacity to maintain positive functioning, meaning, social connectedness, and personal growth while adapting to long-term illness. This narrative review examines the conceptualization, theoretical foundations, current evidence, measurement instruments, and factors associated with flourishing in chronic disease populations. Insights from Keyes' Mental Health Continuum

Acute suicidal affective disturbance and borderline personality disorder symptoms: Distinct yet correlated constructs.

OBJECTIVE: Acute Suicidal Affective Disturbance (ASAD) has been proposed to address the need for a suicide-specific diagnostic entity that better accounts for the psychological symptoms that may emerge during an acute suicidal crisis and that may precede imminent suicidal behaviors. However, additional research is needed to establish ASAD's delimitation from preexisting psychological disorders, especially disorders that include suicidal thoughts and behaviors in their diagnostic criteria such as borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHODS: We estimated two Gaussian graphical models (GGMs),

Efficacy of Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists for Psychological Well-Being and Depressive Symptoms: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are widely used for metabolic disorders. Howeve, their effects on depressive symptoms and psychological well-being remain uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluating the effects of GLP-1RAs on depressive symptoms and psychological well-being. Random-effects models were used to calculate standardized mean differences (SMDs). Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore heterogeneity. The protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42024566217).

Identifying latent profiles of child abuse and their gendered effect on adolescent mental health: a school-based study from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This study aimed to identify patterns of child abuse and neglect and to examine the associations between these patterns and psychological distress during adolescence. A school-based survey was conducted with 693 high school students in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during 2016-2017. Latent class analysis was used to identify child abuse and neglect patterns based on the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire items' combination. Psychological distress was measured using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12). Multiple linear regression models were employed to examine the associations between child abuse a

Predictors and moderators of psychological changes during the treatment of adolescent bulimia nervosa.

This study examined predictors of psychological change among 80 adolescents with bulimia nervosa (BN) participating in a randomized-controlled trial comparing family-based treatment (FBT) to supportive psychotherapy (SPT). Psychological outcomes (cognitive eating disorder pathology, depression, and self-esteem) were explored at baseline, post-treatment, and 6-month follow-up. Multi-level growth models examined predictors of rate of change in psychological outcomes and moderators of treatment effects. All psychological outcomes improved through 6-month follow-up (moderate to large effect sizes)

Aging Makes the Heart Grow Fonder: Age Influences Hearing Ability and Interactions between Psychological Phenomena in Patients with Chronic Tinnitus.

(1) Background: Risk factors for chronic tinnitus comprise interactions of individuals' hearing difficulties and psychological distress-including anxiety, depression, and perceived stress levels. Both groups of factors likely become more pronounced with age, although mixed literature has also suggested increases in psychological resilience over time. To this end, only a few studies have delineated direct and indirect effects of age on audiological and psychological variables that might influence tinnitus-related distress in patients with chronic tinnitus. (2) Methods: N = 678 patients with chr

Association Between COPD Symptoms and Psychological Distress Among Farmers.

BACKGROUND: Farmers have an increased risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and psychological distress. The potential role of psychological distress in worsening COPD symptoms has been reported among the general population, but no studies have examined this relationship among farmers with COPD, which is the purpose of this study. METHODS: This study used the data from the 2017 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Farmers reporting both psychological distress and COPD symptoms were included in this study (n = 239). Both unadjusted and adjusted logistic

The protective power of social connectedness: Individual vs. community influences on psychological distress in middle-aged Black adults.

BACKGROUND: Social connectedness is a crucial determinant of mental health, yet its effects on Black adults remain understudied, particularly in distinguishing between individual and community-level influences. This study examined cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between social connectedness and psychological distress among Black adults at the individual- and neighborhood (census tract) levels. METHODS: Using data from the MIDUS (Midlife in the United States) study, we analyzed 897 Black adults aged 25-74 from an urban setting. Social connectedness was measured across six dimensi

Protocol for a qualitative mechanistic study of MDMA with a sample of psychoanalytic psychotherapists: A phenomenological investigation.

INTRODUCTION: Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy (MDMA-AP) is a potentially transformative intervention for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite encouraging Phase III trial results, the psychological mechanisms underpinning MDMA's therapeutic effects remain insufficiently understood. Existing research on MDMA has emphasised neurobiological processes but has not adequately incorporated subjective, relational, and experiential processes that are likely to be central to optimising psychedelic-assisted treatments. In the absence of an established clinical psychol

Psychological processes underlying the impact of gender-related discrimination on psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming people.

In this study we combined understanding from the gender minority stress and resilience (GMSR) model (Testa, Habarth, Peta, Balsam, & Bockting, 2015) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT; Hayes, Strosahl, & Wilson, 1999, 2012) to test a theoretically integrated and expansive account of the development of psychological distress in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. Specifically, we constructed a parallel multiple mediation model in which we examined the role of psychological processes deriving from the GMSR model (i.e., internalized transphobia and identity nondisclosure)

New directions for racial discrimination research as inspired by the integrative model.

In 1996, Cynthia García Coll and colleagues introduced a groundbreaking model that articulated factors that influenced the development of ethnic-racial minority and immigrant youth. One of the key arguments was that racial discrimination is a stratification mechanism resulting in negative developmental outcomes for minority youth, and this argument has been supported by several meta-analyses. Against the backdrop of the rise of White nationalism, increasing hate crimes against ethnic-racial minority individuals, implementation of national policies that disproportionately affect communities of

Asthma and emotion: a review.

This review of the empirical literature on the relationship between asthma and emotion presents an explanatory model of the connection between them. Asthmatics tend to report and display a high level of negative emotion, and asthma exacerbations have been linked temporally to periods of heightened emotionality. Causality may be bidirectional. Hypothesized mediators for the relationship between asthma and emotionality include vagal and alpha-sympathetic hyperreactivity, predominant obstruction in the larger airways, individual response stereotypy, direct effects of emotion-related facial muscle

Harnessing the power of grief: a framing model and call to action.

In this article, the authors explore the topics of grief and loss through individual vignettes, sharing stories of grief ranging from the loss of identity, the loss of a parent or loved one, and the cultural divides that make nuanced care decisions more challenging, to working in systems that may fail us and our patients. They explore the idea of nested spheres of grief that span from the individual to societal and cultural realms. Each vignette reflects the depth and complexity of their personal experiences and emotions. These moments of grief may result in moral distress, but also present op

A review and integration of models on delusion maintenance.

Contemporary definitions of delusions highlight their resistance to conflicting evidence as the core feature. However, most etiological models of delusions have focused on delusion formation rather than maintenance and we lack a coherent understanding of why delusions persist. We conducted a systematic literature search of models on delusion maintenance, extracted their core postulates, point to explanatory gaps, and derive an integrated framework. We identified 74 published accounts that include postulated mechanisms of delusion maintenance. We classified the models into six core perspectives
