Is it all in your head? Reducing virtual reality induced cybersickness by pleasant odor imagery.

Although immersive technologies such as virtual reality are constantly growing for personal and professional purposes, their use can often induce a transient state of discomfort known as cybersickness, resulting in numerous symptoms and perceptive-motor vulnerability. In an attempt to develop leads to mitigate cybersickness, encouraging findings have reported decreased symptoms during the presentation of pleasant smells. However, the diffusion of smells in ecological settings is very challenging. An interesting alternative could reside in odor imagery (OI), known for its neurophysiological, be

Colonic Angiolipoma: An Extremely Rare Tumor Clinically Masquerading as Acute Appendicitis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The clinical presentation of right iliac fossa pain, anorexia, and vomiting are the classic clinical features of acute appendicitis. However, a broad spectrum of manifestations may result in a similar clinical picture, including gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and gynecologic pathologies. Imaging studies are crucial to establishing the diagnosis. Here, we report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with a one-week history of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. The pain was associated with nausea, vomiting, and frequent bowel motions. There was no history of

Coexistence of cervicogenic headache and migraine without aura (?).

It is well known that migraine with aura may coexist with various unilateral headaches, like cluster headache and chronic paroxysmal hemicrania. It may also coexist with cervicogenic headache. The diagnosis of migraine without aura ("common migraine") poses greater problems than the diagnosis of migraine with aura. Cervicogenic headache diagnosis also poses problems when these two headaches coexist, since they have symptoms in common. Therefore, the scientific demonstration of coexistence of migraine without aura and cervicogenic headache is bound to be a difficult task. In the present study,

Imagining being the agent of actions that carry different moral consequences: an fMRI study.

To investigate the contribution of agency to neural processing involved in aggression and morality, participants viewed in the MRI scanner a series of short visual scenarios in which an individual was either intentionally harming another person or easing the other's pain. They were required to mentally simulate being the perpetrator or the recipient of those actions. Functional connectivity analyses demonstrate that positive agency (easing the pain of another) was associated with increased activity in ventral striatum, while negative agency (harming the other) resulted in a strong signal decre

Intersubject synchronization of cortical activity during natural vision.

To what extent do all brains work alike during natural conditions? We explored this question by letting five subjects freely view half an hour of a popular movie while undergoing functional brain imaging. Applying an unbiased analysis in which spatiotemporal activity patterns in one brain were used to "model" activity in another brain, we found a striking level of voxel-by-voxel synchronization between individuals, not only in primary and secondary visual and auditory areas but also in association cortices. The results reveal a surprising tendency of individual brains to "tick collectively" du

Superior laryngeal nerve injury from thyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a well-recognized complication of thyroid surgery. Injury to the superior laryngeal nerve is less documented, perhaps due to the difficulty in recognizing its manifestations. This study was designed to document the incidence of injury to the superior laryngeal nerve in a series of patients who underwent thyroidectomy. METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients with thyroidectomy during a 9-month period underwent evaluation for superior laryngeal nerve injury 3 months postoperatively. Methods for evaluation included laryngeal videostroboscopy, l

Impact of stress response systems on forced choice recognition in an experimental trauma film paradigm.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic events are often followed by memory impairments of key features of the trauma. Stress hormones are involved in emotional memory formation. However, little is known about their influence during trauma on subsequent recognition memory. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A pooled analysis of two double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (N = 175) was performed to assess the influence of the noradrenergic system and the hypothalamus-pituitaryadrenal (HPA) axis on intrusion formation. Participants received either 10 mg yohimbine (stimulating noradrenergic activity), 0.15 mg clonidine (in

The depiction of electroconvulsive therapy in Hindi cinema.

BACKGROUND: There is little literature on the depiction of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in movies. In India, Hindi cinema is an important source of public information and misinformation about ECT. METHODS: We identified depictions of ECT in Hindi cinema through inquiries with e-communities, video libraries, and other sources. We also searched the PubMed database using search terms related to ECT and movies. RESULTS: Between 1967 and 2008, 13 Hindi movies contained referrals to or depictions of ECT. By and large, the depictions were inaccurate, distorted, and dramatized. Electroconvulsive

Intrathoracic and intra-abdominal Tl-201 abnormalities seen on rotating raw cine data on dual radionuclide myocardial perfusion and gated SPECT.

PURPOSE: The lower thorax and upper abdomen are visualized during cardiac acquisition of rest Tl-201 and stress Tc-99m tetrofosmin gated SPECT. Thus, abnormal Tl-201 localization in these areas and in organs such as parts of the lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys can be observed, including rotating raw cine data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Other than cardiac images, the authors retrospectively reviewed Tl-201 rotating (raw data) images of 235 patients. Abnormal findings in the lungs, liver, spleen, and kidneys were identified that correlated with the patients' clinical information; radiographic fi

Laughter in a psychiatric ward. Somatic, emotional, social, and clinical influences on schizophrenic patients.

The study was designed to explore the potential therapeutic effects of humor on hospitalized schizophrenics. For this purpose, in the first stage, we conducted a review of findings in regard to physical health, emotions, psychiatric state, and social behavior. In the second stage, we carried out an experiment with 34 resident patients in two chronic schizophrenic wards who were exposed to 70 movies during 3 months. The experimental group was exposed to humorous movies only, and the control group to different kinds of movies. Before and after the exposure to films for 3 months, both groups were

Clinical evaluation of myocardial involvement in acute myopericarditis in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Myocardial involvement in young adults has various causes. Acute myopericarditis is one of the myocardial involvements in young adults. It is easy to confuse with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction because of the electrocardiographic features. This study aims to investigate a number of imaging techniques and clinical features for acute myopericarditis in young adults (<30 years of age). METHODS: This retrospective study included 147 patients selected from the 2147 patients at the age of <30 with acute chest pain admitted into emergency service between 2010 and 2016. Of 147 p

The role of lateral occipitotemporal junction and area MT/V5 in the visual analysis of upper-limb postures.

Humans, like numerous other species, strongly rely on the observation of gestures of other individuals in their everyday life. It is hypothesized that the visual processing of human gestures is sustained by a specific functional architecture, even at an early prelexical cognitive stage, different from that required for the processing of other visual entities. In the present PET study, the neural basis of visual gesture analysis was investigated with functional neuroimaging of brain activity during naming and orientation tasks performed on pictures of either static gestures (upper-limb postures

Electromyographic activity of cubital joint muscles in horses during locomotion.

Electromyographic (EMG) activity of 4 muscles of the cubital joint and the strain of forelimb hooves were recorded telemetrically in 4 Thoroughbreds (with and without a rider) standing, walking, trotting, and cantering. Bipolar fine wire electrodes were inserted into the muscles, and strain gauges were attached to the hoof wall. Motion pictures (16 mm), synchronized with EMG tracings, were taken to obtain kinematic data. When horses were standing, the biceps brachii had tonic activity, but the brachialis and the caput longum and the caput laterale of the triceps brachii had no EMG activity. Th…

Paediatric bilateral femoral neck fractures in osteopetrosis treated conservatively.

The treatment of pathological femoral neck fracture in children due to osteopetrosis is not clear as only a few cases have been reported to date. We encountered a 7-year-old osteopetrotic girl with asynchronous bilateral femoral neck fractures. Radiographical assessment showed markedly dense bones with loss of corticomedullary differentiation, sandwich vertebrae and increased density of the ribs. Her mother had a similar radiological picture. Genetic testing showed CLCN-7 mutation which confirmed the diagnosis of autosomal dominant osteopetrosis. As the parents opted against operative treatmen

Coronary spasm and myocardial bridging: an elusive pathophysiological mechanism leading to apical ballooning syndrome?

Apical ballooning syndrome or Takotsubo-like cardiomyopathy is an acute syndrome characterized by normal or near-normal coronary arteries, regional wall motion abnormalities that extend beyond a single coronary vascular bed and, often, a precipitating stressor. We observed a case of an elderly lady with Takotsubo-like left ventricular dysfunction in whom both left anterior descending artery and diagonal branch coronary artery reversible spasm and myocardial bridging were demonstrated at the time of acute cardiac catheterization. It is a common observation that a combination of multiple pathoph

End-plate acetylcholine receptor: structure, mechanism, pharmacology, and disease.

The synapse is a localized neurohumoral contact between a neuron and an effector cell and may be considered the quantum of fast intercellular communication. Analogously, the postsynaptic neurotransmitter receptor may be considered the quantum of fast chemical to electrical transduction. Our understanding of postsynaptic receptors began to develop about a hundred years ago with the demonstration that electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve released acetylcholine and slowed the heart beat. During the past 50 years, advances in understanding postsynaptic receptors increased at a rapid pace, owi

The different growth zones of the fetal foot.

Previous publications revealed no reliable data or models concerning the three-dimensional ontogenesis of the lower extremity. Using the method of plastination-histology in combination with 3D-computer-reconstructions we were able to produce exact, virtual 3D-specimens of 19 healthy fetal feet. The fetuses were aged between 9 to 38 weeks of gestation and age-dependently related to four defined age-groups. We compared these feet with the help of a new geometrical method. Thus, we obtained a kind of "slow-motion-picture" of the undisturbed three-dimensional development of the fetal foot. Our res

Motion sickness and space sickness: clinical and experimental findings.

Vertigo in motion sickness forms a clear clinical picture. We can confirm that complex symptoms are due to abnormal stimulations of labyrinth receptors subsequent to simultaneous multi-plane angular accelerations. This labyrinth stimulation originates from Coriolis' complementary accelerations. The seriousness of kinetosis symptoms can vary according to different causes; level of labyrinth stimulation, subject's constitution, psychological and physical conditions and whether or not the subject is accustomed to kinetic stimulations. Space sickness shows similar symptoms and similar psychologica

Perioperative takotsubo cardiomyopathy: Implications for anesthesiologist.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is characterized by transient ventricular dysfunction in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease that may be triggered by an acute medical illness or intense physical or emotional stress. TCM is often confused with acute myocardial infarction given the similar electrocardiographic changes, cardiac enzymes, hemodynamic perturbations, and myocardial wall motion abnormalities. In the perioperative setting, the clinical picture may be more confusing because of the effect of anesthesia as well as hemodynamic changes related to the surgery itself. However, a
