Higher Asymmetry Ratio and Refixation Saccades in Individuals with Motion Sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is a complex autonomic phenomenon caused by the intersensory conflict among the balancing systems, resulting in a mismatch of signals between static physical conditions of the susceptible individual exposed to dynamic environment. PURPOSE: The present study was done to assess the sacculocollic reflex pathway and six semicircular canals in individuals susceptible to motion sickness. RESEARCH DESIGN: Standard group comparison was used. STUDY SAMPLE: A total of 60 participants with an age range of 17-25 yr were included, where group I comprised 30 participants with …

Cross-coupling vestibular stimulation: motion sickness and the vestibulo-sympathetic reflex.

Motion sickness is associated with a variety of autonomic symptoms, presumably due to proximity or functional interconnectivity between the autonomic centers in the brainstem and the vestibular system. A direct influence of the vestibular system on cardiovascular variables, defined as the vestibulo-sympathetic reflex, has been reported previously. Our aim was to investigate the sudomotor components of the autonomic responses associated with motion sickness during passive cross-coupling stimulation ("roll while rotating"). Healthy subjects (n = 17) were rotated at 40°/s around an earth-vertical…

Orientation Preferences and Motion Sickness Induced in a Virtual Reality Environment.

BACKGROUND: Astronauts' orientation preferences tend to correlate with their susceptibility to space motion sickness (SMS). Orientation preferences appear universally, since variable sensory cue priorities are used between individuals. However, SMS susceptibility changes after proper training, while orientation preferences seem to be intrinsic proclivities. The present study was conducted to investigate whether orientation preferences change if susceptibility is reduced after repeated exposure to a virtual reality (VR) stimulus environment that induces SMS. METHODS: A horizontal supine postur…

EEG Alpha and Gamma Modulators Mediate Motion Sickness-Related Spectral Responses.

Motion sickness (MS) is a common experience of travelers. To provide insights into brain dynamics associated with MS, this study recruited 19 subjects to participate in an electroencephalogram (EEG) experiment in a virtual-reality driving environment. When riding on consecutive winding roads, subjects experienced postural instability and sensory conflict between visual and vestibular stimuli. Meanwhile, subjects rated their level of MS on a six-point scale. Independent component analysis (ICA) was used to separate the filtered EEG signals into maximally temporally independent components (ICs).…

Susceptibility to motion sickness is not increased following spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: There are two leading theories on the origin of motion sickness. One, the sensory conflict theory, states that sensory information provided by one sensory channel does not match the expected input from another channel; commonly, these two inputs originate in the vestibular system and the eyes. The second theory - the postural instability theory - states that motion sickness comes about not through sensory conflict, but through an inability to control one's posture. OBJECTIVE: Given that people with a motor-complete spinal cord injury cannot control their muscles below the level of…

Formulation of Eco-friendly Medicated Chewing Gum to Prevent Motion Sickness.

An attempt was made to formulate medicated chewing gum to prevent motion sickness using natural gum base for faster onset of action and easy administration, anywhere and anytime, without access to water. To avoid the discard issue of gum cud, natural gum base of Triticum aestivum (wheat grain) was explored because of its biodegradable and biocompatible nature and easy availability. Prolamin, extracted from wheat, showed good chewing capacity, elasticity, high water retention capacity, antifungal activity, and compatibility with the drug. Formulations were prepared based on a two-factor and thr…

Brainstem processing of vestibular sensory exafference: implications for motion sickness etiology.

The origin of the internal "sensory conflict" stimulus causing motion sickness has been debated for more than four decades. Recent studies show a subclass of neurons in the vestibular nuclei and deep cerebellar nuclei that respond preferentially to passive head movements. During active movement, the semicircular canal and otolith input ("reafference") to these neurons are canceled by a mechanism comparing the expected consequences of self-generated movement (estimated with an internal model-presumably located in the cerebellum) with the actual sensory feedback. The un-canceled component ("exaf…

Console video games, postural activity, and motion sickness during passive restraint.

We examined the influence of passive restraint on postural activity and motion sickness in individuals who actively controlled a potentially nauseogenic visual motion stimulus (a driving video game). Twenty-four adults (20.09 ± 1.56 years; 167.80 ± 7.94 cm; 59.02 ± 9.18 kg) were recruited as participants. Using elastic bands, standing participants were passively restrained at the head, shoulders, hips, and knees. During restraint, participants played (i.e., controlled) a driving video game (a motorcycle race), for 50 min. During game play, we recorded the movement of the head and torso, using …

Vestibular dysfunction in migraine: effects of associated vertigo and motion sickness.

The mechanisms of vestibular migraine and motion sickness remain unknown. The aims of this study were to determine interictal vestibular dysfunction in migraineurs according to associated dizziness/vertigo and motion sickness, and to find out whether impaired uvulonodular inhibition over the vestibular system underlies the vestibular symptoms and signs by measuring tilt suppression of the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). One hundred and thirty-one patients with migraine [65 with vestibular migraine (MV), 41 with migrainous dizziness (MD), and 25 with migraine only (MO)] and 50 normal controls un…

Baclofen, motion sickness susceptibility and the neural basis for velocity storage.

Reduction of the dominant time constant (T(VOR)) of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) by habituation is associated with a decrease in motion sickness susceptibility. Baclofen, a GABA(b) agonist, reduces the time constant of the velocity storage integrator in the aVOR in a dose-dependent manner. The high frequency aVOR gain is unaltered by baclofen. Here we demonstrate that the reduction in T(VOR) produced by oral administration of 20 mg of baclofen causes a significant reduction in motion sickness susceptibility, tested with roll while rotating (RWR). These data show that motion sickn…

Development of a melting tablet containing promethazine HCl against motion sickness.

The purpose of this study was to design a 'Traveller Friendly Drug Delivery System' for PM-HCl. Conventional promethazine (PM-HCl) tablets are bitter, need to be taken 1 h before symptoms and water is also needed. Taste-masked granules were produced with Eudragit E100 by extrusion, and analyzed with FTIR, DSC, and XRD. Tablets formulated from granules by direct compression using Ac-Di-Sol, Polyplasdone-XL, Primojel and ion-exchanger Tulsion339 and evaluated for mass uniformity, friability, tensile strength, drug content uniformity, water absorption ratio, in-vitro and in-vivo disintegration ti

[Investigation of the anti-motion sickness effect of 3-hydroxypyridine derivatives].

Experiments with rats showed that three out of 12 3-hydroxypyridine derivatives (ethyl-methyl hyd- roxypyrine succinate, SK-132 and IBCP-2 - had an anti-motion sickness effect stronger than of scopolamine, the reference vestiboloprotector. The anti-motion sickness effect of ethyl-methyl hydroxypyrine was also demonstrated in experiments with cats. Apparent anti-motion sickness effect of ethyl-methyl hydroxypyrine (mexydol) was found in 69% of healthy male volunteers which is comparable with the effect of scopolamine (62%). In experiments with immobilized cats (myorelaxation drugs) the microele…

Optokinetic drum tilt hastens the onset of vection-induced motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Under optokinetic drum conditions, a stationary participant views the patterned interior of a rotating drum. Quickly, most participants perceive illusory self-rotation in the direction opposite to the drum's true rotation (vection). It has been documented that up to 60% of participants experience motion sickness-like symptoms under optokinetic conditions perhaps because of conflicting sensory information from the visual and vestibular systems. METHODS: Keeping rotation speed constant (10 RPM), drum tilt relative to the axis of rotation was systematically manipulated (0 degrees, 5 …

Postural instability and motion sickness in a fixed-based flight simulator.

We evaluated the prediction that postural instability would precede the subjective symptoms of motion sickness in a fixed-base flight simulator. Participants sat in a cockpit in a video projection dome and were exposed to optical flow that oscillated in the roll axis with exposure durations typical of flight simulation. The frequencies of oscillation were those that characterize spontaneous postural sway during stance. Head motion was measured prior to and during exposure to imposed optical flow. Of 14 participants, 6 were classified as motion sick, either during or after exposure to the optic…

Oculomotor function during space flight and susceptibility to space motion sickness.

Horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and saccadic eye movements (SEM) were studied in 18 subjects before and during five Space Shuttle missions to evaluate the effects of weightlessness and correlations between results and susceptibility to and actual presence of space motion sickness (SMS). Active sinusoidal head oscillation was the stimulus for VOR tests with vision (VVOR), with eyes shaded (VOR-ES), and VOR suppression (VOR-S). Eye movements were recorded by electrooculography and head position by a potentiometer. No pathological nystagmus or other abnormal eye movements were seen. No s…

Orientation perception, motion sickness and vertigo: beyond the sensory conflict approach.

Current theoretical issues central to the understanding of pathological disorientation (vertigo) are addressed through a critical review of research into perceptual disorientation in healthy subjects (motion sickness). Investigations inspired by the 'sensory conflict' model of orientation perception typically paid insufficient attention to higher-order meaningful properties of the environment, purposive activity, and individual differences in sensorimotor experience and skill. These factors are incorporated into an alternative 'active perception' approach, which characterizes perception of ori…
