Desmin, the muscle specific intermediate filament (IF) protein encoded by a single gene, is expressed in all muscle tissues. Lipoid proteinosis (Urbach-Wiethe disease (Urbach, E and Wiethe, C, Lipoidosis cutis mucosae, Virchows Arch. Patholog. The manometric findings of deglutitive pharyngoesophageal function in a patient with the Kearns-Sayre syndrome and cervical dysphagia are described. These findings indicate that striated muscles of the pharynx, upper esophageal sphincter (UES), and proximal esophagus are involved. Near absence of pharyngeal peristalsis, abnormally low UES resting pressure, and absence of proximal esophageal peristalsis characterize the manometric findings in this patient. It is conceivable that in mild cases, a combination of various degrees of severity of the above findings may exist.

Myositis ossificans progressiva is a rare inherited ossifying condition of the striated muscle tissue. In the English language literature there is no reported association of this disease with an advanced state of pregnancy, nor is there any well-documented scientific data about the effect of pregnancy on this disease or of this disease on pregnancy. This report is about a patient with myositis ossificans progressiva carrying to 30 weeks' gestation and successfully delivering a viable female infant. The antenatal care and management problems of this case are discussed.

A case of Pena-Shokeir I syndrome in a female neonate is reported. The baby died of respiratory insufficiency shortly after birth. Selective suppression of the total IgE antibody response has been achieved in rats by injection of rabbit anti-rat epsilon-chain antibodies. Nine patients with the Shy-Drager syndrome underwent complete urological and neurological investigation of bladder symptoms. Urodynamic studies revealed detrusor areflexia in 6 patients (67 per cent), detrusor hyperreflexia in 3 (33 per cent), a lower motor neuron lesion involving the periurethral striated muscle in 9 (100 per cent) and an open vesical neck at rest in all 5 patients in whom cystography was performed. These findings support the current view that parasympathetic, pudendal and sympathetic involvement is part of the pathophysiology of the Shy-Drager syndrome.

Video recordings during radiodynamic studies of miction (ERDM) in 50 patients with spinal cord injuries produced images markedly superior in quality to permictional films in cases of dysuria. Correlation with cystosphincterometry (CSM) findings were good for normal cases. Dynamic studies were more effective than CSM for the neck, but less reliable for the detrusor and striated muscle on the condition than an electromyogram had been performed. In patients with complete spasticity the type of miction cannot be predicted from the level of the lesion.
