BACKGROUND: Clubfeet and constriction band syndrome is a very rare non-idiopathic condition. Treatment is often difficult and the recurrence deformity rate is high. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of Ponseti method in the treatment of congenital constriction band syndrome accompanied by clubfoot deformity and lymphedema.
CASE PRESENTATION: We are presenting an interesting case of bilateral clubfeet and congenital circumferential constriction band syndrome in the lower limb. Ponseti method of correcting the congenital clubfoot deformity was applied. Constriction band

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 1-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was evaluated for a sternal defect and ventral abdominal wall hernia.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The cat appeared healthy. Palpation revealed a sternal defect, and the heart could be observed beating underneath the skin at the caudoventral aspect of the thorax. A 3-cm-diameter freely movable mass, consistent with a hernia, was also palpated at the cranioventral aspect of the abdomen. Thoracic radiographic and CT images revealed a sternal cleft, cranial midline abdominal wall hernia, and peritoneopericardial diaphragmatic hernia (PPDH

Several ruminant species have been shown to be susceptible to Schmallenberg virus (SBV), but adult animals usually recover after showing mild or no clinical signs. However, transplacental infection can occur and lead to abortion, malformations and stillborn lambs, calves and goat kids. During November and December 2014, malformations were observed in 11 stillborn calves from two farms in the north-eastern region of Namibia. Blood samples were collected from 9 of the 11 cows that delivered stillborn and malformed calves. All these animals tested negative for Rift Valley fever, bovine viral diar

OBJECTIVES: Despite the widespread use of bracing to correct Pectus carinatum (PC) there is no consensus in the number of hours per day patients are instructed to wear the brace. In our practice, we use a less rigorous protocol of 8-12h/day. We sought to evaluate our results and those in the literature to determine whether more intensive usage is necessary.
STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed the outcomes of patients with PC treated at our institution between 2012 and 2015. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science for studies describing the use of bracing to correct PC.
RESULTS: Seventy-five pat

The tendon of the extensor indicis (EI) is frequently used to restore the loss of function in other digits. However, it shows many variations which include splitting of the extensor indicis proprius (EIP) into two or three distal slips, attachment to fingers other than the index such as the extensor medii proprius (EMP), attachment onto the index and the third finger such as the extensor indicis et medii communis, or attachment to both the index and the thumb such as the extensor pollicis et indicis (EPI). This systematic review gathers the available data on the prevalence of EI tendon and its

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of fetal bone dysplasias diagnosed at the Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine (UNIMEF) of the Instituto Nacional de Perinatologia (INPer); and to describe the most frequent skeletal dysplasias and to propose a diagnostic flow chart.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a case series study including skeletal dysplasias cases from January 1995 until December 2009 at the UNIMEF Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 12 statistical software.
RESULTS: A total of 81,892 births were registered at the institution during the study period. The prevalence of bo

We report the case of a newborn with the unusual association of an upper sternal defect and transposition of the great arteries. Surgical correction of the cardiac disease consisted of the arterial switch procedure. The already less compliant bony thorax of the infant made direct approximation of the upper sternal defect only possible with adjuvant bilateral chondrotomy. Sternal cleft repair is advised during the very first weeks of life.

Talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) and congenital vertical talus are commonly seen as isolated deformities in the newborn; however, the case that we described in this article entailed a classic talipes equino varus on the left and a calcaneovalgus on the right. Both deformities were successfully corrected with manipulation therapy and, ultimately, surgical release of the tendoAchillis.

Only a few cases of double-layered meniscus have been described in the English literature. We report two cases of bilateral double-layered lateral meniscus, where an additional semicircular meniscus was observed over the normal lateral meniscus. One of the patients exhibited a bucket-handle tear with a double-layered meniscus. To our knowledge, this abnormality is extremely rare and the incidence of double layered meniscus with bucket-handle tear has not been previously reported.

Anterior chest wall anomalies vary by age at presentation, signs, and symptoms as well as evaluation and subsequent surgical treatment. The most common abnormalities include pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, and Poland syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The standard approach for correction of pectus carinatum deformity includes elevation of the pectoralis major and rectus abdominis muscle from the sternum and adjacent ribs. A postoperative restriction of shoulder activity for several weeks is necessary to allow stable healing of the elevated muscles. To reduce postoperative immobilization, we present a modified approach to the parasternal ribs using a pectoralis muscle split technique.
METHODS: At each level of rib cartilage resection, the pectoralis muscle is split along the direction of its fibers instead of elevating the entir

Down syndrome, the result of trisomy of chromosome 21, is one of the most common chromosomal abnormalities. Patients have a characteristic facial appearance, variable levels of intelligence and self-care skills, and a variety of associated medical conditions. Orthopaedic manifestations occur frequently; most are related to hypotonia, joint hypermobility, and ligamentous laxity. Atlanto-occipital and atlantoaxial hypermobility, as well as bony anomalies of the cervical spine, can produce atlanto-occipital and cervical instability. Methods of screening for this instability, particularly with reg

Diaphragmatic agenesis is an extremely rare clinical entity and has only been reported five previous times in the English literature. We report a patient with bilateral diaphragmatic agenesis complicated by a paraduodenal hernia. Diaphragmatic agenesis is rarely diagnosed preoperatively. Most diagnoses will likely be made during exploration for suspected bowel obstruction or other gastrointestinal emergency. When they are found repair seems warranted if contamination from associated procedures such as bowel resection is minimal. Repair of diaphragmatic agenesis can be approached much like the

Focal musculoskeletal anomalies vary, and can manifest as part of a syndrome or be accompanied by numerous other conditions such as genetic disorders, karyotype abnormalities, central nervous system anomalies and other skeletal anomalies. Isolated focal musculoskeletal anomaly does, however, also occur; its early prenatal diagnosis is important in deciding prenatal care, and also helps in counseling parents about the postnatal effects of numerous possible associated anomalies. We have encountered 50 cases involving focal musculoskeletal anomalies, including focal limb dysplasia [radial ray abn

The RASopathies comprise an ever-growing number of clinical syndromes resulting from germline mutations in components of the RAS/MAPK signaling pathway. While multiple organs and tissues may be affected by these mutations, this review will focus on how these mutations specifically impact the musculoskeletal system. Herein, we review the genetics and musculoskeletal phenotypes of these syndromes in humans. We discuss how mutations in the RASopathy syndromes have been studied in translational mouse models. Finally, we discuss how signaling molecules within the RAS/MAPK pathway are involved in no
