Musculoskeletal Injury in Australian Infantry Personnel: A Cross-sectional Study to Understand Prevention Priorities.

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal injury patterns are under-investigated in the Royal Australian Infantry Corps. Subsequently, more evidence is needed to support injury prevention processes in this population. One difficulty in collecting injury information to monitor injury patterns within combat populations accurately is known injury concealment behaviors in such populations. This study aims to examine musculoskeletal injury epidemiology within Australian infantry battalions using a tailored approach to mitigate reporting avoidance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study using an anonym

Pediatric Musculoskeletal Infections: Imaging Guidelines and Recommendations.

Pediatric musculoskeletal infections often pose a diagnostic challenge due to their frequently vague and nonspecific clinical presentation. Imaging evaluation is a crucial component to diagnostic workup of these entities. Changed epidemiology of these infections over the past 2 decades has resulted in increases in both disease incidence and severity in the pediatric population. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is essential in order to reduce the risk of morbid sequelae, and to optimize patient management. In this article, the unique pathophysiology of musculoskeletal infections and characteristic

The Development of a Surgical Mission in the Peruvian Amazon: A 15-Year Expedition.

Musculoskeletal disorders and injuries represent a substantial proportion of the global burden of disease. This burden is particularly prevalent in low and middle-income countries that already have insufficient health-care resources. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the vision, the history, the implementation, and the challenges in establishing an orthopaedic surgical mission in a developing nation to help address the epidemic of musculoskeletal trauma.Scalpel At The Cross (SATC) is a nonprofit Christian orthopaedic surgical mission organization that sends teams of 10 to 20 members to

Paediatric musculoskeletal US beyond the hip joint.

US is a technique particularly suited to the investigation of musculoskeletal disorders in children and adolescents. This review paper describes a range of clinical settings beyond the hip joint where US has a significant role to play, including sports injuries, infectious diseases, inflammatory and degenerative conditions, congenital and developmental disorders, acute trauma of bone and joints, and peripheral nerve injuries. In some circumstances, US can be regarded as the most effective means of diagnostic imaging, whereas in other instances, it is an alternative or supplement to other more

Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential of Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles as Nanocarriers in Musculoskeletal Disorders.

The musculoskeletal system consists of bones, joint cartilage, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and their associated nerves and blood vessels. These components work together to maintain human movement and mechanical stability, serving as the critical foundation for sustaining life activities. In recent years, with the acceleration of population aging, the incidence of musculoskeletal-related diseases such as sarcopenia, muscle atrophy, osteoporosis (OP), osteoarthritis (OA), and tendon injuries has continued to rise, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and imposing a heavy social hea…

Chronic coccidioidomycosis infection of the knee: a case report.

Coccidioidomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by C immitis in endemic areas of the southwestern United States. Extrapulmonary hematogenous dissemination is a feared complication of the primary pulmonary disease. The musculoskeletal system can be involved, and disseminated musculoskeletal infections can be extremely difficult to eradicate. Surgical treatment of chronic bone and joint infections includes débridement and eventual arthrodesis for end-stage secondary osteoarthritis.

Accuracy of self-reported injuries compared to medical record data.

BACKGROUND: Self-reported injury data are frequently used in epidemiologic investigations. These data provide useful information about the activities and mechanisms of injuries because injury cause-coding is often not required for outpatient medical visits. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this evaluation is to determine the accuracy of self-reported military injuries when compared to injuries in outpatient medical records. METHOD: Injuries reported by survey were compared to diagnoses for injuries (International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9-CM 800-999)) and injury-related musculoskeletal dis

Chronic musculoskeletal pain in chronic fatigue syndrome: recent developments and therapeutic implications.

Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) experience chronic musculoskeletal pain which is even more debilitating than fatigue. Scientific research data gathered around the world enables clinicians to understand, at least in part, chronic musculoskeletal pain in CFS patients. Generalized joint hypermobility and benign joint hypermobility syndrome appear to be highly prevalent among CFS sufferers, but they do not seem to be of any clinical importance. On the other hand, pain catastrophizing accounts for a substantial portion of musculoskeletal pain and is a predictor of exercise performance

Musculoskeletal adverse events induced by immune checkpoint inhibitors: a large-scale pharmacovigilance study.

Background: The musculoskeletal toxicity of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is receiving increasing attention with clinical experience. Nevertheless, the absence of a systematic investigation into the musculoskeletal toxicity profile of ICIs currently results in the under-recognition of associated adverse events. Further and more comprehensive investigations are warranted to delineate the musculoskeletal toxicity profile of ICIs and characterize these adverse events. Material and methods: The present study employed the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System database to collect adverse events b

Shoulder instability in the young athlete.

Shoulder instability is among the most common musculoskeletal injuries and overuse conditions in pediatric and adolescent athletes requiring orthopaedic care. Injury patterns in skeletally immature patients are unique to the developing musculoskeletal system and may be specific to the involved sport. It is helpful to have an outline of the basic diagnostic approaches and to review the literature that guides management principles in young athletes with shoulder instability.

Post-COVID-19 Myositis Based on Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Case Report.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes COVID-19, which is known to cause fever, dry cough, exhaustion, headache, and loss of taste and smell. Although fever, sore throat, and cough have historically been the utmost characteristic symptoms of the illness, published case reports have recently started to emphasize additional uncommon and unusual presentations of infection with the coronavirus. In COVID, the musculoskeletal system is seldomly involved. In addition to reviewing the causes and imaging characteristics of COVID-19-related illnesses of the musculoskelet…

Infectious arthropathies and other rheumatologic manifestations of infectious diseases.

Infectious agents have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many rheumatologic diseases. In most of these diseases, including those in which specific organisms are known to play a role, the details of pathogenesis remain incompletely defined. Recent studies have aimed to isolate bacterial and viral pathogens from patients with rheumatic diseases, efforts have been made to further define the host immune response to infection, and there have been attempts to develop improved methods of diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system. This review discusses re…

Optimal feedback control to describe multiple representations of primary motor cortex neurons.

Primary motor cortex (M1) neurons are tuned in response to several parameters related to motor control, and it was recently reported that M1 is important in feedback control. However, it remains unclear how M1 neurons encode information to control the musculoskeletal system. In this study, we examined the underlying computational mechanisms of M1 based on optimal feedback control (OFC) theory, which is a plausible hypothesis for neuromotor control. We modelled an isometric torque production task that required joint torque to be regulated and maintained at desired levels in a musculoskeletal sy…
