Transient musical hallucinosis of central origin: a review and clinical study.

A 52 year old, right handed, hearing impaired woman was admitted with headache and neck stiffness. The only neuropsychological symptom was transient auditory perceptions in the left ear, which were musical, seemed familiar and were not influenced by verbal communication. CT and MRI showed a right subarachnoid haemorrhage, while brainstem auditory evoked potentials failed to reveal a brainstem lesion. In patients with organic cerebral disease, unilateral auditory hallucinations (AHs) may indicate a lesion in the contralateral hemisphere. However, according to this review the type of AHs (verbal…

Musical hallucinations and hearing deficit in a young non-psychotic female.

A case of musical hallucinations in a young non-psychotic female is described. The only presented symptoms were perceptual disturbances accompanied by the fear of having a severe mental disorder. Further investigation disclosed a perforated ear-drum, with subsequent mild hearing deficit but no signs of major psychopathology. It is suggested that a psychiatric diagnosis should be deferred in such patients, before audible deficits had been ruled out. The clinical features of musical hallucinations associated with hearing deficits are discussed.

Language development deficits and early interactive music intervention (BusyBaby): protocol description of a double-blind randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of music on language development in infancy.

BACKGROUND: Infancy and early childhood lay the foundation for language and reading abilities. They are crucial for success in social relationships, education, and work life, but can be compromised by heritable conditions such as developmental dyslexia. Music activities have shown associations with auditory, language, and literacy skills, but randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have been lacking, especially in young and at-risk populations. This two-arm RCT evaluates the efficacy of an early music intervention for language development. As highly novel aspects, we investigate whether and how th…

Curriculum-integrated music practice enhances medical student well-being and interpersonal skills.

INTRODUCTION: Many medical students incorporate music in their daily lives, however opportunities to engage with music within the curriculum are rare. This mixed-methods study explores the experiences of medical students who participated in a semester-long, performance-focused 'Music for Health' elective at an Australian University, including benefits and challenges perceived by students. METHODS: Data were collected over a three-year period, from six cohorts (2018-2023) of students who participated in the elective during the second year of their medical degree. Twenty-one (21) students who p…

Positive narrative writing reduces music performance anxiety more effectively than traumatic narrative.

Music performance anxiety (MPA) is a multidimensional construct that may impair performance quality and mental health, depending on individual and contextual factors. Current interventions are often costly, require specialized expertise, or lack feasibility. Expressive writing intervention (EWI) is low-cost and easy to implement. This study randomly assigned 120 music students with high MPA to three 3-day writing conditions: positive narrative (describing successful performances), traumatic narrative (describing stressful performances), or neutral control. MPA was measured pre- and post-interv…

Cumulative sociodemographic risk moderates the short-term effects of active music engagement.

OBJECTIVE: The experience of cancer treatment can lead to interrelated distress among young children and their parents, which may induce traumatic stress symptoms among parents, undermine their well-being, and disrupt family function. Active music engagement (AME) is a dyadic music therapy intervention that addresses interrelated child-parent distress. Families undergoing treatment for cancer face varying levels of sociodemographic risk in their homes and communities, and levels of risk may impact the effects of AME. The current study examines whether cumulative sociodemographic risk moderated…

Music Listening Is an Action Verb: Phoronomy, Sound Tracking and Morphodynamic Transformation.

This article is a follow-up of a previous article where music was defined as matter or substance that flows. It argued for a rheological approach to music listening, conceiving of music as a virtual, motional object that evolves over time. The current article proceeds on similar lines by introducing the concept of phoronomy as the kinematic study of motion. It revolves about the way listeners can perceptually track sound by relying on motor imagery and ideomotor simulation, thus describing listening as an action verb by entailing active engagement with the sonic world. Listening, in that view,…

Music as Neuromodulation: A Systematic Review with Insights from Human Intracranial Electrophysiology.

Music engages a wide range of cognitive and affective processes; however, the precise mechanisms by which music shapes brain activity remain incompletely understood. Human intracranial electrophysiology (iEEG) provides a unique opportunity to answer this question through direct recordings of neural activity with high spatial and temporal resolution. Here, we systematically review the intracranial literature on music perception and its cell- and circuit-level neural effects, identifying common principles extending across experimental paradigms and brain regions. Following PRISMA guidelines, thr…

Ambient Music Decreases EEG Burst-Suppression Ratio During General Anesthesia in Rats.

During deep anesthesia, the EEG becomes discontinuous. Burst-suppression is often an intended target during deep sedation or medically induced coma. Within this state, anesthetic depth is commonly monitored by the suppression ratio (SR), which expresses the fraction of time spent in suppression. However, accumulating evidence suggests that SR remains reactive to external stimulation. We tested whether ambient music commonly played in operating theaters alters the SR in male Wistar rats under sevoflurane, chloral hydrate, or isoflurane anesthesia. To this end, the first 60 s of the Stayin' Aliv…

Preserving music reward in age-related hearing loss through training and adaptation.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (HL) is highly prevalent, undertreated, and can negatively impact quality of life. Music engagement, which supports cognition and well-being, is affected by HL; however, implications of HL on music reward remain unclear. The authors hypothesized that worsening HL may reduce music perception and engagement, but reward may be preserved through musical training and impaired by increasing age. METHODS: The present study used a convergent mixed-methods approach to examine the cross-sectional associations between HL and music perception, engagement, and reward, a…

Music-Evoked Nostalgia Activates Default Mode and Reward Networks Across the Lifespan.

Nostalgia is a mixed emotion that is often evoked by music. Nostalgic music may induce temporary improvements in autobiographical memory in individuals with cognitive decline. However, the neural mechanism underlying music-evoked nostalgia and its associated memory improvements is unclear. With the ultimate goal of understanding how nostalgia-evoking music may help retrieve autobiographical memories in individuals with cognitive impairment, we first sought to understand the neural underpinnings of these processes in healthy younger and older adults. Methodological constraints, including the la…

Altered music emotion experiences of congenital amusia: from the perspective of reward.

BACKGROUND: A biological model of auditory learning posits that the auditory cortex interacts with the cognitive, sensorimotor, and reward systems to improve sound learning in real-world listening. Congenital amusia is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in fine-grained pitch discrimination. Although previous studies have investigated the auditory processing, sensorimotor and cognitive abilities of amusia, the characteristics of musical reward in amusia remain unclear. METHOD: We recruited 44 individuals with congenital amusia (22 females; 19.66 ± 1.92years), identified wi…

Exposure to vibrotactile music improves audiometric performances in individuals with cochlear implants.

Vibrotactile stimulation has been shown to enhance the music listening experience of cochlear implant (CI) users. However, while existing studies have focused on music perception, significant gaps remain in our understanding of how music induces emotions in CI users and the role of vibrotactile stimulation in this process. Furthermore, the after-effects of audio-vibrotactile music listening on audiometric test performances have not yet been investigated on CI users. This paper presents a study in which two groups of twelve CI users were each exposed to music alone and to music with concurrent …
