Potato tuber periderm is armored with suberin, that consists of two domains, an aliphatic domain composed of fatty acid polyesters and an aromatic domain composed of cinnamic acids. Streptomyces scabies 87.22, a predominant causal agent of potato common scab, was compared for adaptation to tuber suberin with Streptomyces acidiscabies ATCC 49003 and Streptomyces turgidiscabies Car8 belonging to emerging pathogenic species. Streptomyces scabies 87.22 showed higher growth in the suberin supplemented medium than the two other strains. When co-cultured in a rich nutrient medium, S. acidiscabies ATC

Streptomyces scabies is a pathogenic actinomycete that infects potato crops and commonly causes scab-like lesions on potato tubers. Screening of strains antagonistic towards S. scabies in the natural environment was performed in this study. This study focused on the extraction of antibacterial substances and changes in potato defense enzymes and the rhizosphere microbiota. Together, these factors constitute biological control mechanisms. Pot experiments showed that Bacillus atrophaeus CY1 reduced the infection of scabs caused by S. scabies from 92 % to 60 % and the disease index from 62 % to 2

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) can be found in marine and estuarine waters due to accidental spills of oil and derivatives, as well as in production water and effluents discharged from petrochemical plants. Addressing the bioremediation of these compounds in saline environments and effluents with elevated salinity levels is imperative. In this study, the halotolerance of Aspergillus niger was assessed by subjecting it to a stepwise increase in salinity, achieved through progressive addition of NaCl from 2 to 30‰ (v/v). The fungal strain exhibited optimal growth support up to

Candida albicans (C. albicans), the most common fungal pathogen, has the ability to form a biofilm, leading to enhanced virulence and antibiotic resistance. Cocultimycin A, a novel antifungal antibiotic isolated from the co-culture of two marine fungi, exhibited a potent inhibitory effect on planktonic C. albicans cells. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-biofilm activity of cocultimycin A against C. albicans and explore its underlying mechanism. Crystal violet staining showed that cocultimycin A remarkably inhibited biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner and disrupted mature biofilms

Twenty 1,4-pentadiene-3-one derivatives containing quinazolinone (W1-W20) were designed and synthesized. The bioactivity test results showed that some compounds had antifungal activities in vitro. W12 showed excellent bioactivity against Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (S. sclerotiorum) and Phomopsis sp., with EC50 values of 0.70 and 3.84 μg/mL, which are higher than those of the control drug azoxystrobin at 8.15 and 17.25 μg/mL. In vivo activity tests were carried out on oilseed rape and kiwifruit. The protective effect of W12 on oilseed rape infected with S. sclerotiorum (91.7 and 87.3%) was better

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America and is caused by fungi from the Paracoccidioides genus. The infection begins after inhalation of the fungal propagules and their thermo-dimorphic shift to yeast form. Proteases play an important role in the host invasion process and immune modulation in many pathogenic microorganisms. Aspartyl proteases are virulence factors in many human fungal pathogens that play an important role in the host invasion process morphogenesis, cellular function, immunity, and nutrition. In the present study, we characterized th

Saprolegnia parasitica, the causative agent of saprolegniosis in fish, and Aphanomyces astaci, the causative agent of crayfish plague, are oomycete pathogens that cause economic losses in aquaculture. Since toxic chemicals are currently used to control them, we aimed to investigate their inhibition by essential oils of sage, rosemary, and bay laurel as environmentally acceptable alternatives. Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that the essential oils tested were rich in bioactive volatiles, mainly monoterpenes. Mycelium and zoospores of A. astaci were more sensitive c

The alternative oxidase (AOX) catalyzes the transfer of electrons from ubiquinol to oxygen without the translocation of protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. This enzyme has been proposed to participate in the regulation of cell growth, sporulation, yeast-mycelium transition, resistance to reactive oxygen species, infection, and production of secondary metabolites. Two approaches have been used to evaluate AOX function: incubation of cells for long periods of time with AOX inhibitors or deletion of AOX gene. However, AOX inhibitors might have different targets. To test non-specific

Despite decades of intensive research (especially from 1970s to 1990s), the ericoid mycorrhizal (ErM) hair root is still largely terra incognita and this simplified guide is intended to revive and promote the study of its mycobiota. Basic theoretical knowledge on the ErM symbiosis is summarized, followed by practical advices on Ericaceae root sample collection and handling, microscopic observations and photo-documentation of root fungal colonization, mycobiont isolation, maintenance and identification and resynthesis experiments with ericoid plants. The necessity of a proper selection of the r

BACKGROUND: Histoplasmosis is a mycosis caused by soil-based fungus Histoplasma capsulatum endemic in the USA, Latin America, Africa and South-East Asia. The disease is usually self-resolving, but exposure to a large inoculum or accompanying immune deficiencies may result in severe illness. Symptoms are unspecific with fever, cough and malaise as the most common. Thus, this is a case of disease which is difficult to diagnose and very rare in Europe. As a result, it is usually not suspected in elderly patients with cough and dyspnea.
CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 78-year-old patient,

Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), a systemic mycosis with a high incidence in Latin America, is caused by thermodimorphic fungi of the Paracoccidioides genus. The contact with host occurs by the inhalation of conidia or mycelial propagules which once reaching the pulmonary alveoli differentiate into yeast cells. This transition process is vital in the pathogenesis of PCM allowing the fungus survival in the host. Thus, the present work performed a comparative proteome analysis of mycelia, mycelia-to-yeast transition, and yeast cells of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. For that, tryptic peptides were

Candida albicans is an opportunistic fungus that is part of the normal microflora commonly found in the human digestive tract and the normal mucosa or skin of healthy individuals. However, in immunocompromised individuals, it becomes a serious health concern and a threat to their lives and is ranked as the leading fungal infection in humans worldwide. As existing treatments for this infection are non-specific or under threat of developing resistance, there is a dire necessity to find new targets for designing specific drugs to defeat this fungus. Some authors reported the presence of the trans

Chiral hydroxyphosphonates due to their wide range of biological properties are industrially important chemicals. Chemical synthesis of their optical isomers is expensive, time consuming and not friendly to the environment, so biotransformations are under consideration. Among others, these compounds act as enzymes inhibitors. This makes the bioconversions of phosphonates, especially scaling experiments, hard to perform. Biocatalysis is one of the methods that can be applied in synthesis of optically pure compounds. To increase the efficiency of the process with whole cell biocatalysts, it is e

The influence of inorganic and organic phosphorus (P) and the absence of P in the culture medium on the type of mycorrhizal colonization formed (ecto-, ectendo-, or endomycorrhiza) during Helianthemum almeriense x Terfezia claveryi symbiosis in in vitro conditions was analyzed. This is the first time that the relative proportions of the different mycorrhizal types in mycorrhizal roots of H. almeriense have been quantified and statistically analyzed. The relative proportions of the mycorrhizal types depended on the P source in the medium, suggesting that it is the organic P form that induces th

BACKGROUND: Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is a dimorphic fungus that causes the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America. The response to heat shock is involved in pathogenesis, as this pathogen switches from mycelium to yeast forms in a temperature dependent fashion that is essential to establish infection. HSP90 is a molecular chaperone that helps in the folding and stabilization of selected polypeptides. HSP90 family members have been shown to present important roles in fungi, especially in the pathogenic species, as an immunodominant antigen and also as a potential antifungal thera

The dimorphic pathogenic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis can grow as a prototroph for organic sulfur as a mycelial (non-pathogenic) form, but it is unable to assimilate inorganic sulfur as a yeast (pathogenic) form. Temperature and the inability to assimilate inorganic sulfur are the single conditions known to affect P. brasiliensis mycelium-to-yeast (M-Y) dimorphic transition. For a comprehensive evaluation of genes that have their expression modulated during the M-Y transition in different culture media, we performed a large-scale analysis of gene expression using a microarray hybridiza
