Multiple aspects of headache risk in children.

Both epidemiological and pharmacoclinical research have been carried out on children suffering from headache. Two epidemiological trials wer … ceptor in both migrainous and hyperactive children was evidenced by measuring phenylephrine-induced mydriasis. The possible etiopathogenetic correlations among headache, hyperactivity, and other HR factors are discussed in accordance with the central theory of headache.

Ophthalmic Atropine: A Typical Anticholinergic Toxidrome From an Atypical Old Culprit.

Included on the World Health Organization Model Lists of Essential Medicines, atropine remains a cornerstone medication that is used for a myriad of clinical indications. Systemically, atropine carries indications for the treatment of asymptomatic and symptomatic bradycardia, reduction of salivation and bronchial secretions prior to surgery, and as an antidote for a variety of poisoning agents (i.e., carbamate or organophosphate insecticides, nerve agents, muscarine-containing mushrooms). Topically, atropine is administered via the ophthalmic route for the treatment of cycloplegia, mydriasis, …

Evaluation of Realistic Sensation Using Biological Reaction Measurements for Food Videos Presented by KMMD.

We have prototyped a KANSEI multimedia display (KMMD) that is able to release scent through the screen in order to realize collaboration bet … vior as if the viewers themselves are eating. The sympathetic nervous system temporarily increases, mydriasis occurs, and the frontal lobe is activated. Furthermore, the possibility of objective evaluation of realistic sensations was demonstrated by the correlation between appetite, accompanied by salivary sensation, and the biological reaction measurement …

Femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in management of posterior capsule tear following blunt trauma: Case report and review of literature.

PURPOSE: To describe the diagnosis and management of a patient with rupture of the posterior capsule (PC) following blunt trauma to the left eye. OBSERVATION: 68 year-old man presented with complaints of left eye pain, blurry vision and photophobia after getting hit in the left eye with a baseball. He was found to have a posterior capsule rupture, as well as mydriasis and zonular dialysis without formation of intumescent traumatic cataract. Femtosecond laser associated cataract surgery (FLACS) was performed to facilitate creation of an anterior capsulotomy and segmentation of the nucleus with…

Misdiagnosis and pitfalls in Panayiotopoulos syndrome.

Panayiotopoulos syndrome (PS) is a frequent (6% among children of 1-15 years) and benign epileptic syndrome, characterized by predominantly autonomic symptoms (emesis, pallor, flushing, cyanosis, mydriasis/miosis, cardiorespiratory and thermoregulatory alterations, incontinence of urine and/or feces, hypersalivation, and modifications of intestinal motility) associated with simple motor focal seizures, which can be followed by secondary generalization. Panayiotopoulos syndrome can be extremely insidious, because it can mimic several condition, such as gastroenteritis, gastroesophageal reflux d…

Cranial nerve palsies in childhood.

We review ocular motor cranial nerve palsies in childhood and highlight many of the features that differentiate these from their occurrence … tures that may be of concern in adulthood may not be relevant in childhood; whereas the presence of mydriasis in III palsy suggests a compressive aetiology in adults, this is not the case in children. However, the frequency of associated CNS abnormalities in III palsy and the risk of tumour in VI palsy can be indications for early neuroimaging depending on …

Hypoxic apnoea induced by N2 inhalation can be reversed by the aspiration reflex in anaesthetized cats.

Various cardiorespiratory and electrophysiological parameters were analysed in a model of acute respiratory failure induced by inhalation of pure nitrogen in approximately 150 anaesthetized cats. Initial hyperventilation leading to apnoea was characterized by extreme hypoxaemia, marked bradycardia and flattening of electrocortical (ECoG) activity. Artificial ventilation applied at the stage of marked mydriasis usually spontaneously prevented cardiovascular failure and normalized vital functions. Up to seven successive apnoeic attacks could be induced in the same cat. During the first 30 or 60 …

Cluster headache pathogenesis: a pupillometric study.

Thirty-two cluster headache patients and healthy controls (n = 16-20 for the various tests) were examined by means of a Whitaker pupillomete … ng statistically significant for the OH-amphetamine test. With the phenylephrine test, however, the mydriasis on the symptomatic side significantly exceeded that of the contralateral pupil. This pattern of reactions does not quite correspond to those of "ordinary" Horner's syndrome (1st, 2nd, and 3rd neuron lesion). There are, however, gross similarities wi …

Effects of chronic sympathetic stimulation on corneal wound healing.

To explore the possibility that adrenergic fibers influence epithelial wound healing in the rabbit cornea, chronic electrodes were implanted in the left cervical sympathetic nerve, and symmetrical wounds were produced on the corneal epithelium of both eyes by means of n-heptanol. Continuous sympathetic stimulation was applied to awake, unrestrained animals during the wound-healing process (2-3 days) by use of a portable stimulator that delivered 1 ms, 3-Hz electric pulses at an amplitude necessary to evoke mydriasis. Migration rates of epithelial cells surrounding the wound and estimated wound…

Fenfluramine poisoning.

In a series of 53 fenfluramine intoxications (15 taken from the literature), 10 were lethal after doses of 28.7--70 mg/kg of body weight. Cardiac arrest occurred 1--4 hr after ingestion in 9 cases; all these 9 patients died. Two out of 3 patients with more than 15 mg/kg had coma and convulsions. Other frequent signs were mydriasis, tachycardia, and rubor of the face. The additional signs of nystagmus, hypertonia, trismus, hyperreflexia, clonus, excitation, hyperthermia, and sweating define the clinical syndrome of fenfluramine intoxication. Symptoms begin 30--60 min after ingestion and can per…

[Ocular localization appearing in a child with acute lymphoblastosis after hematological remission for 18 months].

Case report of a 4-year-old girl in whom a unilateral ocular localization appeared after 1 1/2 year of maintained remission of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The evolution of this localization can be divided in three phases: 1. During the first 17 months, an apparent simple relapsing conjunctivitis of the left eye. 2. During the following 5 months, repeated episodes of the left iritis with mydriasis and discolouration of the iris. 3. Finally, left uveitis involving the anterior chamber, with hypopion, hyphaema and glaucoma; the clinical presentation at this stage was suggestive of ocular lymph…

Pharmacological properties of pempidine (1:2:2:6:6-pentamethylpiperidine), a new ganglion-blocking compound.

Pempidine (1:2:2:6:6-pentamethylpiperidine) is a long-acting ganglion-blocking compound which is effective by mouth. By intravenous injectio … s judged by (a) the low ratio (6.9) of oral to intravenous toxicities, (b) the rapid development of mydriasis in mice after oral administration of small doses, and (c) the rapid onset of hypotension when the compound is injected directly into the duodenum of anaesthetized cats. Other actions include neuromuscular paralysis of curare-like type when large dos …

Association between ocular injuries and internal orbital fractures.

PURPOSE: The physical mechanism of orbital blowout fractures has been debated for years by surgeons. Three main theories have been promulgat … f 60 globes with significant traumatic ocular findings. This was followed in frequency by traumatic mydriasis (19 globes) and traumatic iritis (15 globes). Most ocular injuries were minor. CONCLUSIONS: The low incidence of significant ocular injury may indicate that direct contact of the globe with the traumatic force is not common. This finding gives cred …

Micropulse Cyclophotocoagulation: A Multicenter Study of Efficacy, Safety, and Factors Associated With Increased Risk of Complications.

UNLABELLED: PRéCIS:: Micropulse cyclophotocoagulation (MPCP) lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in the short-term but nearly half required additional intervention. Mydriasis was the most common complication (11%); 15% lost ≥3 Snellen lines of acuity; 11% had persistent complications at last follow-up. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and complications of MPCP in a large series of patients with all stages of glaucoma. DESIGN: Multicenter, retrospective chart review of patients from 3 clinical sites. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred sixty-seven eyes of 143 patients. M…
