BACKGROUND: The Minnesota Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risks (SENSOR) has collected data on the nature, incidence, and cause of work-related amputation injuries that have taken place since 1992.
METHODS: SENSOR defined an amputation as any finger amputation or the loss of any other body part; 832 workers were identified as having amputation injuries between 1994 and 1995 and 72% of these workers completed telephone interviews.

BACKGROUND: The management of neonates with long-gap esophageal atresia without a fistula (type A) is complex. Options for esophageal reconstruction include use of the native esophagus or replacement with colon, stomach, or small bowel. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of children variously treated with this defect.
METHODS: The course of 23 infants with type A esophageal atresia were retrospectively reviewed. Diagnosis was achieved by plain radiographs and endoscopy. The mean gestational age was 33.9 weeks, and the birth weight was 1.87 kilograms.

Fifty four patients with peripheral nerve syndromes were seen during a 15 month period in a population of about 1500 HIV infected patients at all stages of the disease. A photographic demonstration of the focal nature of the retinal illumination from the operating microscope is presented. It illustrates that under normal anterior segment operating procedures, the side-mounted and coaxial illuminators are imaged as small, intense spots on the retina. The irradiance (in watts per square centimeter) of these spots is reduced by their defocusing in aphakia. Cautionary attention is drawn to the danger of allowing these retinal hot spots to be imaged on or near the macula during surgery.

The nature of enzymes involved in demethylation of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) was investigated in hepatic microsomes of rats. Compared to the other cytochrome P-450-dependent enzymes. NDMA demethylase had anomalous properties as reported in the literature.
