Gustatory sweating (or chorda tympani syndrome) in the submandibular region is a rare complication of cervical surgery. We report a 66-year-old patient who had been referred for the management of a squamous cell carcinoma of the mobile tongue. She was treated by bilateral neck dissection and bilateral resection of the submandibular glands. Bilateral gustatory sweating in the submandibular region developed 10 years later and was successfully treated with bilateral injections of botulinum toxin type A.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder pain and dysfunction after neck dissection may result from injury to the accessory nerve. The effect of early physical therapy in the form of intensive scapular strengthening exercises is unknown.
METHODS: A total of 59 neck dissection participants were prospectively recruited for this study. Participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group (n = 32), consisting of progressive scapular strengthening exercises for 12 weeks, or the control group (n = 29). Blinded assessment occurred at baseline, and at 3, 6, and 12 months.
RESULTS: Three-month data were …

BACKGROUND: Traumatic neuroma can be confused with a metastatic lymph node after neck dissection for malignancy, thereby increasing patient anxiety and necessitating fine needle aspiration (FNA). To date, however, there have been no reports showing a direct ultrasonographic (US) sign of traumatic neuroma that could help distinguish it from a metastatic lymph node after neck dissection. Here, we describe a patient with traumatic neuroma who showed a direct US sign after total thyroidectomy with modified radical neck dissection (MRND).
SUMMARY: A 61-year-old man who had undergone total thyroide…

Thoracic duct injuries and chylous fistula are well-known complications of neck dissection, occurring in 1-2% of cases. Management of these injuries can be conservative or operative. Conservative treatment consists of fat restricted diet or total parenteral nutrition reducing the volume of chyle production. Operative management includes exploration of the neck or if necessary open thoracotomy to ligate the thoracic duct. Following cervical thoracic duct ligation only few complications like chylothorax or chylous ascites are described in the literature. To the best authors knowledge, this is th…

The necessity of routine carotid sheath removal during neck dissections for head and neck carcinomas, particularly in clinically N0 and N+ necks without extranodal extension (ENE), remains debatable. This prospective study aimed to document the incidence of pathological involvement of the carotid sheath in such cases. A total of 121 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma underwent neck dissections with the carotid sheath left intact unless infiltration was suspected. Among these, only one patient (0.8%) exhibited carotid sheath involvement, while 120 (99.2%) did not. No regional recurrence…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The benefit of elective postoperative radiotherapy (PORT) to the pN0 neck after en bloc primary tumor with neck dissection in patients with oral cavity cancer remains unclear. This nationwide multicenter retrospective observational study investigates the effect of adding or omitting elective neck irradiation to PORT of the primary tumor bed.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Treatment data from 12 head and neck cancer centers in the Netherlands was pooled to compare oncologic outcomes and long-term toxicity between 2 groups of patients, i.e. in whom the PORT volume involved the p…

The scars produced by the surgical approaches commonly used for neck dissection in patients with malignant tumors of the head and neck are generally very evident and unaesthetic, especially when performed on young patients or on patients with a tendency to form keloids. There are multiple alternative approaches and techniques that attempt to eliminate or conceal these cervical scars, but they have been used almost exclusively in benign or congenital processes. Amid these aesthetic and/or minimally invasive cervical techniques, we highlight rhytidectomy/facelift, intraoral, endoscopic, and robo…

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of video-assisted lateral neck dissection (VALND) in the treatment of lateral lymph node metastasis (LLNM) of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed on PTC patients with LLNM who underwent VALND in our center from June 2013 to December 2017. The safety of VALND was evaluated by the rate of postoperative complications, while its efficacy was evaluated by the number of lateral necks dissected (LND) and the rate of recurrence.
RESULTS: A total of 191 patients with pathologically confirm…

BACKGROUND: Early-stage supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma carries a substantial risk of occult lymph node metastasis, yet the benefit and extent of elective neck dissection (END) in clinically node-negative (cN0) patients remain debated.
METHODS: This systematic review analyzed studies published between 2000 and 2025 evaluating END versus observation in adults with early-stage (cT1-T2N0) supraglottic tumors, following predefined criteria and PRISMA methodology.
RESULTS: Sixteen studies met inclusion criteria. Occult nodal metastasis was identified in 13-37.5% of patients, with level II-es…

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) with neck dissection has emerged as an organ-preserving treatment for hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC), but long-term evidence remains limited. This retrospective study evaluated oncologic outcomes, prognostic factors, mortality patterns, and organ preservation in patients with T1-T3 HPSCC. From October 2010 to August 2023, 48 patients without prior upper aerodigestive tract malignancy or irradiation underwent TORS with neck dissection, with or without cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant chemoradiation. Tumor stages included T1 (…

Horner's syndrome is a rare complication of thyroid surgery and is most commonly reported as a complication associated with lateral neck dissection. We present the case of a 46-year-old woman who developed a partial Horner's syndrome following hemithyroidectomy and central neck dissection, without lateral neck dissection. The patient underwent right hemithyroidectomy and central neck dissection for a TIRADS-5 nodule and developed right sided facial anhidrosis and absence of right-sided facial erythema on exertion 6 weeks post-operatively. No ocular involvement was detected. Neurologist review …

PURPOSE: Entirely endoscopic surgery via an oral approach is a novel surgical procedure that results in favorable cosmetic outcomes for papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients. However, technical constraints have limited the utilization of a single approach for neck lymph node dissection. The aim of this study was to report the safety and outcomes of a novel gasless transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy and lateral neck dissection (LND) procedure for papillary thyroid cancer patients with lateral lymph node metastases.
METHODS: This study reported a newly designed suspension system and trocars f…

Patients with cutaneous melanoma with metastatic deposits in the parotid gland have poor prognosis due to the high risk of developing distant metastasis. In the era of effective immunotherapy, there is no consensus amongst head and neck surgeons about the extent of neck dissection required for patients presenting with clinically apparent parotid metastasis. This review aims to determine the incidence and pattern of occult neck disease for patients with parotid metastasis reported in the literature to help guide clinicians on the extent of neck dissection required. The systematic review search …
