Thymic Epithelial Neoplasms: Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation.

Thymic epithelial neoplasms, as classified by the World Health Organization, include thymoma, thymic carcinoma, and thymic carcinoid. They are a rare group of tumors and are often diagnosed incidentally in the work-up of parathymic syndrome, such as myasthenia gravis, or when mass effect or local invasion causes other symptoms. In each of these scenarios, understanding the radiologic-pathologic relationship of these tumors allows clinical imagers to contribute meaningfully to management decisions and overall patient care. Integrating important imaging features, such as local invasion, and path

Breast metastases of eccrine porocarcinoma.

Eccrine porocarcinoma is a rare skin adnexal malignant neoplasm that may arise from a pre-existing benign eccrine poroma or without a predisposing factor. It is a highly invasive neoplasm and has a strong metastatic potential. The most frequently affected organs are the lymph nodes and rarely solid organs such as the liver, lungs and breast. We report a case of a woman with a history of surgically treated eccrine porocarcinoma that a year later presented with multiple lesions in both breasts and axillary lymphadenopathies. After a detailed imaging investigation, the diagnosis of metastatic les

Primary Appendiceal Adenocarcinoma Masquerading as Acute Appendicitis: A Case Report.

Primary adenocarcinoma of the appendix is a rare neoplasm, and a large number are found incidentally during abdominal imaging and operations with other indications. This report examines a case of primary appendiceal adenocarcinoma discovered incidentally following a seemingly routine laparoscopic appendectomy in a 69-year-old male. The patient presented with atypical signs of acute appendicitis, including a history of waxing and waning right lower quadrant pain without anorexia, fever, or chills over five days. After undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy, histopathologic analysis of the appendi

Role of Multiphasic Computed Tomography in the Evaluation of Neoplastic Pancreatic Masses: A Single-Center Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic neoplasms are associated with high morbidity and mortality, largely due to late diagnosis and challenges in accurate staging. Multiphasic computed tomography (CT) is a critical imaging tool for evaluating pancreatic masses offering detailed information on lesion characterization and surgical resectability. Precise radiological assessment is vital for treatment planning, and correlating imaging findings with histopathology improves diagnostic efficiency. METHODS: This prospective study was conducted on 50 patients with clinically suspected pancreatic neoplasms who underw

Metabolic alterations in the peritumoral brain in cases of meningiomas: 1H-MRS study.

The objective of the present study was metabolic characterization of the peritumoral brain in the vicinity of meningiomas using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS). Data of long-echo (TR: 2000 ms, TE: 136 ms) single-voxel spectroscopic investigations were obtained during preoperative examination of 81 patients (19 men and 62 women; mean age, 56.5 years). Twenty-seven neoplasms were disclosed incidentally. Moderate-to-severe peritumoral edema was presented in 20 cases. Invasive growth of the tumor was macroscopically identified during surgery in 35 cases. Analyzed metabolites incl

[Clinical types of thoracic cancer. Mediastinal tumours].

Mediastinal germ cell tumours (teratomas, seminomas, and non-seminomatous malignant germ cell tumours) are a heterogeneous group of benign and malignant neoplasms. The standard treatment of mediastinal non-seminomatous malignant germ cell tumours is four cycles of chemotherapy followed by surgical resection of the residual mass. Small localized mediastinal seminomas may be treated with primary resection followed by radiotherapy. In patients with locally advanced disease, the preferred treatment is systemic chemotherapy followed by surgical resection of any residual disease. Thymomas can be loc

Diagnostic performance of MR imaging in evaluating prognostic factors in patients with cervical cancer: a meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the diagnostic performance of conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in assessing the distance between the tumor and the internal os, stromal infiltration, lymph node metastasis, and parametrial invasion in patients with cervical cancer. METHODS: A systematic English-language literature search of conventional MRI in the evaluation of human cervical cancer was performed in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science databases from 1995 to 2018. The pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and positive and negativ

Malignant thymoma associated with autoimmune diseases: a retrospective study and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether malignant thymoma is associated with high rates of concomitantly occurring autoimmune diseases. METHODS: Sheba Medical Center computer records from 1966 to 1995 were reviewed to identify patients with malignant thymoma, either type I (invasive thymoma) or type II (thymic carcinoma). All patients who had malignant thymoma and autoimmune phenomena were analyzed. The diagnosis of thymic neoplasm was confirmed by two independent pathologists. The diagnosis of autoimmune diseases was based on both clinical and serological findings. RESULTS: Six of 22 (27%) cases o

18F-FDG PET/CT Demonstrating Chorioadenoma Destruens After Evacuation of Complete Hydatidiform Mole.

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasias (GTNs) are a group of pregnancy-related neoplasms, which include chorioadenoma destruens (invasive mole), placental site trophoblastic tumor, and choriocarcinoma. Although the role of F-FDG PET/CT is still undefined in GTN, in selected cases, it can have significant impact on patient management. Here, we present the case of a 29-year-old woman with hydatidiform mole suggestive of GTN 3 months after evacuation. F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated chorioadenoma destruens (invasive mole) and ruled out metastasis in this case.

Radiofrequency ablation of 40 lung neoplasms: preliminary results.

OBJECTIVE: Radiofrequency thermal ablation is a minimally invasive treatment widely used for treatment of liver neoplasms and has also been tested on other types of tumor. Few studies have been published regarding the use of radiofrequency thermal ablation in the treatment of lung neoplasms. This study was performed to evaluate the technical feasibility, the safety, and the efficacy of lung radiofrequency thermal ablation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Between February 2002 and March 2003, 18 subjects with unresectable lung neoplasms, four of whom had primary neoplasms and 14 of whom had metastatic n

A Novel Three-Stage AI-Assisted Approach for Accurate Differential Diagnosis and Classification of NIFTP and Thyroid Neoplasms.

The recent introduction of the term non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) marked a pivotal shift in the classification of encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (EFVPTC) lacking invasive features. While its reclassification from the "malignant" to "low-risk neoplasm" category significantly reduced overtreatment, its histopathological diagnosis remains challenging due to overlapping features with other thyroid lesions and inter-observer variability. Artificial intelligence (AI) overcomes such key limitations of histopatholo

Intramucosal carcinoma on biopsy reliably predicts invasive colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of invasive malignancy on biopsies from colorectal neoplasms can be challenging. The concept of intramucosal carcinoma as an indicator of invasive malignancy is somewhat controversial within histopathology circles despite current World Health Organization (WHO) definitions. This study was designed to correlate the biopsy finding of intramucosal carcinoma with the pathology findings after formal surgical excision. METHODOLOGY: We evaluated 89 patients whose initial forceps biopsy contained only intramucosal carcinoma. All tumors were subsequently resected and subjecte

Pulmonary cytopathology of an invasive thymoma.

The cytopathology of an invasive thymoma that penetrated the bronchus is presented. As is typical of these neoplasms histologically, both epithelial cells (thymocytes) and lymphocytes were seen cytologically. However, the benign appearance of the thymocytes precluded a neoplastic diagnosis initially. Only with the knowledge that an anterior mediastinal mass is present roentgenographically can this diagnosis be safely made cytologically.

Surgical technique for partial-layer tracheal resection for esophageal cancer with tracheal invasion.

Combined resection for tracheal invasion in esophageal cancer is extremely challenging. Tracheal resection with cervical or mediastinal tracheostomy is often performed; however, this procedure has high morbidity rates and results in loss of voice. We present our experience performing a partial-layer tracheal resection, "tracheal shaving," for esophageal cancer with tracheal invasion. We successfully performed tracheal adventitia and tracheal muscle resection in a patient with adventitial invasion, and the shaving area was reinforced by omental covering along with a gastric tube reconstructed t

Neoplastic associations of rheumatic diseases and rheumatic manifestations of cancer.

Associations between rheumatic diseases and malignant neoplasms are still inferential and based largely on epidemiologic data. Rheumatoid arthritis predisposes weakly to the occurrence of lymphoreticular neoplasms. This is more clearly true of Sjögren's disease, whether or not it is associated with RA. A subset of DM/PM which becomes manifest in close temporal proximity to a neoplasm may be a paraneoplastic reaction, but DM/PM, in general, does not predispose to neoplasia. Scleroderma in its early phase is associated with the development of breast cancer in women, and after a decade or longer,

Metastatic Malignancies to the Ovaries: Often Hiding in Plain Sight.

CONTEXT.—: Between 5% and 30% of malignant neoplasms involving the ovary are metastatic. A variety of neoplasms can metastasize to the ovary, including those from the colorectum, endometrium, breast, appendix, stomach, and cervix. OBJECTIVE.—: To summarize the clinical, gross, and histologic features that aid in distinguishing primary ovarian neoplasms from metastatic neoplasms. Additionally, to discuss the immunohistochemical features that help identify the primary site of origin. DATA SOURCES.—: Sources include literature review and cases identified from the authors' practice. CONCLUSIONS

Laparoscopic resection of duodenal gangliocytic paraganglioma. A case report.

Paraganglioma is an exceedingly rare tumour of the duodenum that arises in close proximity to the ampulla of Vater. To date a total of 133 cases of duodenal paraganglioma have been reported in the literature; of these, 27 (20%) were histologically gangliocytic paragangliomas. This neoplasm generally behaves in a benign fashion, although instances of recurrence and/or lymph node metastasis have been described. The treatment consists in endoscopic polypectomy or surgical resection in relation to the histological features and the macroscopic extent of the neoplasm. We present a case of a benign d
