BACKGROUND: Uveal metastasis from a neuroendocrine tumour is rare and can simulate other primary or metastatic uveal tumours, both clinically and cytomorphologically. We describe four cases of uveal metastasis from a neuroendocrine tumour diagnosed by fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB).
METHODS: Four patients were referred for evaluation of a recently detected fundus mass. Two patients had a history of malignant, non-ocular, neuroendocrine neoplasms (Merkel cell carcinoma and lung carcinoid in one patient each). The third patient had a mediastinal mass that had been biopsied inconclusively,

Spindle cell tumors originating in the mediastinum are extremely rare. Due to the profusion of structures and organs located in the mediastinum, a wide variety of spindle cell neoplastic processes can develop in this location. These include various different tumor types including epithelial, vascular, lipomatous, fibroblastic and neural tumors among others. Many of these different tumor types are associated with specific immunohistochemical and molecular genetic profiles that help differentiate them from each other. Although spindle cell morphology has traditionally been associated with mesenc

Primary neuroendocrine neoplasms occurring in the mediastinum are rare. The spectrum of such tumors can range from low- to high-grade neoplasms. The histogenesis of these tumors is varied, and some of them may originate from ectopic tissues in the mediastinum whereas others represent tumors native to the thymus. Primary thymic neuroendocrine carcinomas therefore need to be separated from other neuroendocrine neoplasms of the mediastinum, namely ectopic parathyroid tumors and paragangliomas. The histopathologic classification of primary neuroendocrine carcinomas of the mediastinum is still unde

Periampullary carcinoma includes neoplasms arising from head of pancreas, distal common bile duct, duodenum and ampulla of Vater. We report a case of a 41-year-old male, medically free who presented to our hospital as a case of obstructive jaundice, weight loss, headache and blurred vision. Clinical evaluation revealed memory loss and ataxia. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was carried out and showed a mass in the ampullary area, histopathology showed ampullary adenocarcinoma. Metastatic work up was carried out which revealed two brain metastatic lesions and multiple intr

INTRODUCTION: Homonymous quadrantanopsia results from retrochiasmal lesions in the visual pathway. Invasive mole is a benign tumor that arises from myometrial invasion of a hydatidiform mole via direct extension through tissue or venous channels. Cerebral metastasis of invasive mole is rare and there has been no report demonstrating homonymous quadrantanopsia as the first manifestation of metastasis in any trophoblastic neoplasms.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 31-year-old Asian woman who presented with right homonymous inferior quadrantanopsia from the mass effect of a solitary c

Meningiomas are common intracranial neoplasms with benign features, and extracranial metastases are very rare. There have been no previous reports of solitary mediastinal lymph node metastasis from benign meningiomas without pulmonary lesions. Here, we present a case of an 82-year-old female who visited our department for mediastinal lymphadenopathy with a history of meningioma treated with total surgical resection six years prior. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration of the left lower paratracheal lymph node revealed a benign meningothelial meningioma. In patients

Anal cancer is a rare tumor that accounts for 2% of all colorectal neoplasms. The brain is a rarely affected organ. The aim of the present study was to the review the only four cases of anal cancer brain metastases previously published in the literature. In addition, the current study presents the case of a 69-year-old male diagnosed with basaloid undifferentiated carcinoma of the anal canal (stage IV with liver, lung and bone metastasis). Despite the patient's good response to chemotherapy and the achievement of a partial response that was maintained for 14 months, brain metastases developed.

Granulosa cell tumors of the ovary are rare neoplasms arising from sex-cord stromal cells. These tumors usually present with stage I disease as they are frequently associated with hormonal effects. Only a small percentage of such tumors metastasize and the common sites of metastasis are lung, liver, and brain. Granulosa cell tumor of ovary metastasizing to breast has never been reported in literature. We present such a case of ovarian granulosa cell tumor with metastasis to the breast, which was the presenting symptom. The patient was treated with total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral sal

BACKGROUND: Neoplasms of the vermiform appendix are rare. They comprise a heterogeneous group of entities requiring differentkinds of treatment.
METHODS: This review is based on publications retrieved by a selective literature search in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochranedatabases.
RESULTS: 0.5% of all tumors of the gastrointestinal tract arise in the appendix. Their treatment depends on their histopathologicalclassification and tumor stage. The mucosal epithelium gives rise to adenomas, sessile serrated lesions, adenocarcinomas,goblet-cell adenocarcinomas, and mucinous neoplasms. Neuroendocrin

Duodenal neuroendocrine neoplasms (d-NEN) are rare neoplasms accounting for approximately 3% of all neuroendocrine neoplasms. They are classified into well-differentiated neoplasms (G1-G3), poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (NEC) and mixed tumors; the majority of these tumors are nonfunctional. Some neoplasms are associated with genetic syndromes, such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 or neurofibromatosis type 1. The diagnosis is made using endoscopic, laboratory, cross-sectional and molecular imaging techniques, such as gallium-68-DOTATATE PET/CT. Therapeutically, the tumo

Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) indicates the metastasis of a malignant neoplasm to the peritoneal surface. PC can be incidentally detected before discovery of the primary malignancy during an imaging study. There are other conditions that can mimic PC, such as pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal lymphomatosis, peritoneal malignant mesothelioma, leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata, and tuberculous peritonitis. These diseases may appear similar on computed tomography (CT), but there are some clues for the differential diagnosis. This article will describe the CT findings of PC and its mimics

Clear cell sarcoma of the kidney (CCSK) is an uncommon neoplasm that accounts for less than 5% of all pediatric renal tumors. Compared with Wilms' tumor, CCSK has a higher rate of relapse, greater propensity for bone metastasis, and poorer overall survival. We present the case of a 19-month-old boy with a large renal mass diagnosed incidentally by ultrasonography during surveillance for vesicoureteral reflux. This report describes the rare occurrence of an incidental radiologic capture of CCSK and provides a brief review of disease pathology.

Hurthle cell carcinoma (HCC) of the thyroid is an uncommon and relatively rare differentiated thyroid neoplasm. To our knowledge, no reported case of adrenal metastases with abdominal carcinomatosis secondary to HCC of the thyroid has been demonstrated by F-18 FDG PET/CT imaging. One report of adrenal uptake on I-131 whole-body scan with HCC exists. In this case report, we describe a patient with HCC who had a left adrenal metastasis with abdominal carcinomatosis that was discovered using F-18 FDG PET/CT imaging.

Gallbladder carcinoid tumor is a rare and aggressive neoplasm, usually lacking specific symptoms, as they typically are unassociated with the carcinoid syndrome, despite frequent hepatic spread. The patient was an 81-year-old man with right upper quadrant pain who underwent radical surgery for carcinoid tumor of the gallbladder with liver metastasis (preoperative diagnosis, carcinoma). We analyzed the outcome of previously reported cases of gallbladder carcinoid. Increasing tumor size and depth of invasion progressively compromised the 2-year survival. These findings underscore the importance

A 50-year-old man with a history of systemic carcinoid had decreased right eye vision and a darkly pigmented cilio-choroidal mass. Results of ultrasonographic and fluorescein angiographic examinations were consistent with a malignant melanoma. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the lesion identified it as a carcinoid metastasis. The patient refused both radiation and enucleation; complete excision with a cyclochoroidectomy was performed. Histopathologic examination showed a carcinoid neoplasm covered by marked hyperplasia of the retinal pigment epithelium that produced the pigmented appearance o

Sebaceous adenocarcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the eyelid that often masquerades as a chalazion, blepharitis, or blepharoconjunctivitis. Controversy exists as to the proper mode of therapy for patients with a tumor confined to the eyelid. We believe that wide local excision (5 to 6 mm of normal tissue) with frozen section analysis and eyelid reconstruction is the preferred treatment. Only 1 of 11 patients had a recurrence with this technique. No regional or distant metastasis has occurred in an average of 68 months of follow-up.

A retrospective study of 86 patients with carcinoid tumors was undertaken covering an 18-year period. The most common sites of tumor were the jejunoileum (28 cases), appendix (22), and rectum (16). These were followed by the bronchus, duodenum, colon, and stomach. Three tumors had such wide-spread metastasis that their primary sites of origin could not be determined. The appendiceal and rectal carcinoids were often benign and usually found as incidental tumors, whereas colon and jejunoileal carcinoids were often metastatic. The jejunoileal carcinoids were commonly associated with multiple tumo

Finding an unexpected metastatic lesion in bone marrow biopsy (BMB) performed for a hematological indication can cause diagnostic issues. In a BMB performed in a patient with suspected acute leukemia evolved from a post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis a group of atypical cells with E-cadherin expression was found. After careful morphological evaluation and further immunohistochemical staining, these cells were identified as a melanoma metastasis with E-cadherin expression. E-cadherin immunostain is performed frequently by hematopathologists to highlight erythroid cells but its expressi

Pediatric neoplasms with a myofibroblastic differentiation are frequent in children, in particular myofibroma. Recently, a novel deep soft tissue myofibroblastic neoplasm has been described with high cellularity, a smooth muscle phenotype and SRF-RELA fusion. We report the case of a 15-year-old boy who presented with a tumor of the deep soft tissue of the arm, with overlapping histological features with the recently described SRF-RELA group of myofibromas but differing by the presence of calcifications, a novel SRF-STAT6 fusion transcript and nuclear expression of STAT6. No local recurrence no

In humans, apocrine gland tumours encompass a heterogeneous group of uncommon neoplasms with varied and unpredictable biological behaviour. They can be slow-growing lesions, recur after excision, produce lymph node metastasis in up to 50% of cases or lead to tumour-related death. We document a malignant scent adenocarcinoma in a wedge-capped capuchin monkey (Cebus olivaceus). Immunohistochemical labelling revealed complete absence of myoepithelial cells, a finding usually considered a hallmark of malignancy in humans; however, after a 2-year follow-up, the neoplasm had not recurred. This is th
