Primary Mature Teratoma of the Rectum: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Teratomas are embryonal neoplasms that contain tissues derived from 1 or more of the 3 germ layers. They commonly are found in the sacrococcygeal-gonadal location, sometimes in midline locations such as the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and head and neck region. Primary rectal teratomas are extremely rare. Extragonadal teratomas can originate from pluripotent germ cells present in abnormal embryonic rests. CASE REPORT Here, we report a rare case of a primary mature, solid teratoma of the rectum. A 68-year-old woman presented with hematochezia and denied any history of abdominal pain

[Expert consensus on co-ablation therapy for the perioperative management of bone and soft tissue tumors].

Co-ablation therapy is playing an increasingly important role in the comprehensive treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors. However, these tumors can originate in various sites and organs throughout the body, exhibiting numerous histological types and complex classifications. To standardize the perioperative management of co-ablation therapy for bone and soft tissue tumors at different anatomical locations, the Expert Committee on Radiological Interventional Therapy, Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO), the Expert Committee on Ablation Therapy, Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CS

An update on imaging of Paget's sarcoma.

Paget's sarcoma is a rare and particularly aggressive tumour arising within pagetic bone, affecting approximately 1% of patients with Paget's disease during the course of their disease. Most of these tumours are osteosarcomas, but the age profile, skeletal distribution and clinical outcomes differ considerably from conventional osteosarcoma. In this review, we outline the clinical, radiographic/CT, scintigraphic and magnetic resonance imaging features of Paget's sarcoma. We also review the neoplastic and non-neoplastic mimics of Paget's sarcoma that should be considered in the differential dia

Clinical application of the supraorbital key-hole approach to the treatment of unilateral-dominant bilateral frontal contusions.

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is an uncommon form of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) characterized by a proliferation of predominantly megakaryocytes and granulocytes in the bone marrow that, in fully-developed disease, is associated with reactive deposition of fibrous connective tissue, extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH), and splenomegaly. Kidney involvement is rare and clinically presents with proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, and renal insufficiency. Renal damage can be due to EMH and glomerulopathy. Renal EMH presents three patterns: infiltration of the interstitium with possible renal fail

Epithelial-type and neural-type cadherin expression in malignant noncarcinomatous neoplasms with epithelioid features that involve the soft tissues.

CONTEXT: Transmembrane adhesion molecules, epithelial-type cadherin (ECAD) and neural-type cadherin (NCAD), help in regulating transformations between epithelial and mesenchymal cells in the developing embryo and in maintaining the epithelioid phenotype. Consequently, the presence of epithelioid cells in certain malignant noncarcinomatous neoplasms raises speculation that the expression of ECAD and NCAD in these neoplasms may have diagnostic significance. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the utility of ECAD and NCAD immunoexpression in distinguishing malignant (noncarcinomatous) neoplasms with epith

Disseminated intrathoracic desmoplastic small round-cell tumor: a case report.

PURPOSE: Recently recognized as a distinct clinicopathologic entity, desmoplastic small round-cell tumors typically affect young men. These aggressive tumors usually arise in the abdomen; other sites of primary disease have been described only rarely. We report the case of an extraabdominal primary tumor with widespread dissemination, including the subcutaneous tissue, a previously unrecognized metastatic site. PATIENT AND METHODS: We describe the case of a 16-year-old boy with a primary extraabdominal metastatic desmoplastic small round-cell tumor. RESULTS: Our patient had a primary intrath

[Clinical importance of emission-computed tomography of the skull in bone scintigraphy].

Sixty-five ECT examinations were carried out in patients with abnormalities of the skull base and paranasal sinuses and the results were compared with ordinary scintigraphy and CT. ECT provides additional information as compared with scintigraphy by its images in three planes, which are free of superimposition. This is of value in the localisation of the lesion and for determining its extent and activity. It is a functional tomographic method which is complementary to the morphological information provided by CT. The indications and value of the method in inflammatory, metastatic and neoplasti

Distinguishing bone and soft tissue infections mimicking sarcomas requires multimodal multidisciplinary team assessment.

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to report the presenting characteristics and identify how best to distinguish bone and soft-tissue infections that mimic sarcomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 238 (211 osteomyelitis and 27 soft-tissue infections) patients referred to a tertiary sarcoma multidisciplinary team with suspected sarcoma who were ultimately diagnosed with a bone or soft tissue infection were included. Data from a prospectively collated database was analysed retrospectively. RESULTS: Of all possible bone and soft-tissue sarcoma referrals, a diagnosis of infection was m

Rare Case of Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma of the Right Parotid Gland Correlatively Demonstrated by 18F Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography and Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)/undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is an uncommon malignancy in the head-and-neck region. UPS is a malignant neoplasm of uncertain origin that arises both in soft tissue and bone. We bring forth a 65-year-old female who presented with an ulceroproliferative growth in the right upper neck. Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed a large exophytic, solid-cystic growth in the right parotid region with locoregional extension and few ipsilateral lymph nodes. Cancers of skin, bone, connective tissues, brain, eye, thyroid and other specified and unspecified sites in Inuit.

Low rates of skin cancer, both melanoma and non-melanoma, were observed in Inuit after 20 years of observation. Tumours of the brain and central nervous system, of the thyroid, bone and connective tissues and other specified sites occurred with rates similar to those in comparison populations in Denmark, Connecticut and Canada. These findings support that neither UV and ionizing radiation from nuclear fall-out, nor pollution of herbicides and pesticides in the Arctic area have yet had any noticeable impact on cancer risk. However, unspecified and secondary neoplasms constitute 7-8% of the tota

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis as First Manifestation of Dual B-Cell Neoplasms: A Case Report of Co-Existing Multiple Myeloma and B-Cell Lymphoma.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is an immune disorder causing excessive inflammation and tissue damage. Lymphoma, especially T-cell lymphoma, is the most common cause of HLH, while Multiple Myeloma (MM) is rarely associated. We present a 61-year-old man with spiking fevers, fatigue, and unintentional weight loss. The HLH was driven by two distinct malignant clones in his bone marrow: plasma cell neoplasm and B-cell lymphoma. Patient failed initial therapy with steroids, anakinra, and chemotherapy. Tocilizumab use, on the other hand, led to an excellent clinical and laboratory response

Endemic Kaposi's Sarcoma.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a common neoplasm in Eastern and central Africa reflecting the spread of human gammaherpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), now considered a necessary causal agent for the development of KS. The endemic KS subtype can follow an aggressive clinical course with ulcerative skin lesions with soft tissue invasion or even bone or visceral involvement. In the latter cases, a thorough imaging work-up and better follow-up schedules are warranted. As KS is a chronic disease, the therapeutic goal is to obtain sustainable remission in cutaneous and visceral lesions and a good quality of life. Watc

Spindle Cell/Sclerosing Rhabdomyosarcoma of the Orbit.

A 3-year-old boy developed proptosis over 3 weeks. CT and MRI disclosed a 3.2 × 1.9 cm soft-tissue mass of the right extraconal and intraconal orbit with sphenoid bone erosion. After debulking through an upper eyelid crease incision, the tumor was diagnosed as a spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma. DNA sequencing was negative for an L122R mutation in MyoD1 . Spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcoma is an uncommon variant of this neoplasm, and only 2 patients with orbital tumors have been reported in 2 case series. Spindle cell/sclerosing rhabdomyosarcomas confined to the orbit are conside

Burkitt leukemia with precursor B-cell features that developed after ruxolitinib treatment in a patient with hydroxyurea-refractory JAK2V617F-myeloproliferative neoplasm.

A 62-year-old woman, who had a 16-year history of JAK2V617F-mutated myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN), developed Burkitt leukemia (BL) 16 months after treatment with ruxolitinib to control hydroxyurea-refractory conditions. BL cells were CD10+, CD19+, CD20-, CD34-, cytoplasmic CD79a+, and TdT+, and lacked surface immunoglobulins but expressed the cytoplasmic μ heavy chain. In the bone marrow, nuclear MYC+ BL cells displaced the MPN tissues. t(8;14)(q24;q32) occurred at a CG dinucleotide within MYC exon 1 and at the IGHJ3 segment, and an N-like segment was inserted at the junction. Immunotopographic assessment of lymphoid and plasma cell malignancies in the bone marrow.

To determine the utility of tissue section immunochemistry in the evaluation of bone marrow involved by lymphoid and plasma cell malignancies, snap-frozen, undecalcified bone marrow core and aspirate samples from 23 patients with these disorders were studied with a battery of monoclonal antibodies. With techniques that preserve architecture, difficult diagnostic cases characterized by core but not aspirate involvement, or the reverse, were resolved. By means of an extensive battery of monoclonal antibodies applied to serial sections, complex tumor cell phenotypes were established in all 23 cas

Plasma Cell Granuloma Mimicking Plasmacytoma Illustrated by 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography.

Background: Plasma cell granuloma is generally considered a pseudotumor formed by reactive, polyclonal plasma cells. Although most cases can show polyclonal gammaglobulin production, quite a minority may exhibit monoclonal gammopathy, which mimics plasma cell neoplasms such as multiple myeloma or plasmacytoma. Because of this overlap, distinguishing reactive monoclonal proliferation from true malignancy is clinically essential. Case report: A 79-year-old man was presented with an anterior chest wall mass that had grown during investigation for fever of unknown origin. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose po

Immunohistochemical evaluation of T cell receptor and T cell receptor beta constant 1 expression distinguishes benign and neoplastic immature T-cell populations and reveals discrete TRBC1/TCR phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Expression of TRBC1 and TRBC2 is increasingly assessed in the evaluation for clonal T-cell populations. While flow cytometry has repeatedly shown utility in evaluating TRBC 1/2 expression, immunohistochemical (IHC) methods have not been extensively examined, particularly in immature T-cell populations. PURPOSE: This study evaluated TRBC1 IHC staining in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue, encompassing benign thymic tissue, thymomas, and T-lymphoblastic leukemias/lymphomas (T-LL). METHODS: IHC for TRBC1, CD3, TCR-BF1, and TCR-δ was performed in all cases; TdT was perfo
