A wild adult male conger Conger conger, captured by a SCUBA diver in the waters of coastal Italy, was sent for laboratory analysis due to the presence of multiple productive ulcerous skin lesions localized in the dorso-lateral body area, caudally to the gill operculum under the dorsal fin. The main mass was sessile, ulcerated and hemorrhaging in appearance and was surrounded by several smaller masses, which originated peripherally from the same mass or were isolated, always with a tendency to ulceration. Histology confirmed that the newly formed tissue originated from derma invading the closer

Two cases of feline thymoma with amyloid deposition were encountered between 1982 and 2010. Neoplastic cells were separated by abundant, pale eosinophilic, homogeneous material that was congophilic and birefringent. Ultrastructurally, the neoplastic cells were connected by desmosomes, and the extracellular deposits were composed of nonbranching, hollow-cored fibrils, 8-10 nm in diameter. In the case with sufficient archived tissue for additional sections, the amyloid remained congophilic following potassium permanganate incubation, and the neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for pancytokerati

NTRK-rearranged mesenchymal neoplasms mostly affect the soft tissues of pediatric patients. Given the responsiveness to selective NTRK inhibitors, it remains critical to identify those ultra-rare cases occurring in the viscera of adults. In five females and two males aged 18-53 years, we characterized visceral mesenchymal tumors harboring TPM3-NTRK1 [uterine cervix (N = 2), pleura, prostate], LMNA-NTRK1 (lung), SQSTM1-NTRK3 (heart), and NTRK3 rearrangement with unknown fusion partner (colon/mesocolon) with RNA sequencing, FISH, RT-PCR, and immunohistochemistry. The tumors exhibited spindled to

RATIONALE: Poroid hidradenoma (PH) is a rare variant of benign sweat gland neoplasm without connection to the epidermis. This tumor presents clinically as a solitary lesion with a cystic component located in the subcutaneous layer abutting the skin. On ultrasound, it appears as a circumscribed complex cystic and solid mass abutting the dermis. The occurrence of PH in the breast is very rare. Its features overlap with intraductal papilloma and papillary carcinoma.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 66-year-old woman presented with a palpable lump in her right breast.
DIAGNOSES: Clinical examination revealed

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is an uncommon form of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) characterized by a proliferation of predominantly megakaryocytes and granulocytes in the bone marrow that, in fully-developed disease, is associated with reactive deposition of fibrous connective tissue, extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH), and splenomegaly. Kidney involvement is rare and clinically presents with proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome, and renal insufficiency. Renal damage can be due to EMH and glomerulopathy. Renal EMH presents three patterns: infiltration of the interstitium with possible renal fail

A 78-year-old man was admitted to our department for a right renal mass detected by computed tomography which was accompanied by right hypochondriac pain. Dynamic computed tomography demonstrated a 7cm hypovascular right renal mass invading the liver. No metastatic disease was evident. Transabdominal nephrectomy and partial hepatectomy were performed under the diagnosis of right renal cell carcinoma in July 2014. Pathological examination revealed right renal pelvic carcinoma with liver invasion. After the operation, a subcutaneous nodule in the right forearm rapidly grew in one week. A needle

The Manchester Children's Tumour Registry data for the period 1954-1977 have been analysed. The overall incidence of malignant disease in children aged 0-14 years in the north-west of England is estimated to be 100 per million person-years. The most common disease group is leukaemia, which forms about one third of the total number of cases. Among solid tumours, by far the most common presenting site is the central nervous system, representing nearly a quarter of all neoplasms. Wilms' tumour, neuroblastoma and soft-tissue sarcomas comprise approximately 5%, 6.5% and 6% respectively of the total

Soft tissue calcinosis is a common radiographic finding, which may be related to different types of pathological processes. Multimodality imaging, combined with analysis of clinical and laboratory data, plays an important role for the differential diagnosis of these conditions. Conventional radiography is considered the first line approach to soft tissue calcinosis; CT and MRI may provide further information to better characterize calcified deposits. Imaging may help to distinguish metabolic calcification, such as primary tumoral calcinosis and the secondary one (associated with acquired disor

The fibro osseous lesions of the jaws represent a diverse group of entities that are characterized by replacement of normal bone by a fibrous connective tissue matrix, with in which varying amounts of osteoid, immature and mature bone and in some instances, cementum like material are deposited. Fibro osseous lesions of the jaws include developmental (hamartomatous) lesions, reactive or dysplastic processes and neoplasms. Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is a unique fibro osseous neoplasm. It has 2 histopathological variants (1) Trabecular juvenile ossifying fibroma (TrJOF) and (2) Psammomatoid

D 47 is a monoclonal antibody (IgG2) reacting with a surface antigen of cortical thymocytes. On normal human skin, D 47 was found to react with a cytoplasmic antigen of the cells of the secretory portion of eccrine sweat glands (ESG). No reactivity with D 47 is detected on the excretory part of ESG, on apocrine glands and all other cutaneous structures. In this work we studied through an indirect immunofluorescence method on frozen skin sections the reactivity pattern of D 47 on a group of epithelial skin tumours of certain or alleged glandular differentiation. These consisted of: eccrine spir

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome that results from tumors that secrete fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). This leads to chronic hypophosphatemia. Burosumab, an anti-FGF23 antibody, is an effective treatment when surgery is not possible; however, it complicates FGF23 measurements and postoperative monitoring. We describe the first case report of TIO in which the responsible tumors were discovered during burosumab therapy and successfully resected. Despite tumor removal, the serum FGF23 levels remained elevated. In the postoperative monitoring of patients trea

Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a pivotal humoral factor for the regulation of serum phosphate levels and was first identified in patients with autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets and tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO), the most common form of acquired FGF23-related hypophosphatemic rickets/osteomalacia (FGF23rHR). After the identification of FGF23, many other inherited and acquired forms of FGF23rHR were reported. In this review article, the detailed features of each acquired FGF23rHR are discussed, including TIO, ectopic FGF23 syndrome with malignancy, fibrous dysplasia/McCune-A

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMT) are rare and distinctive tumors that typically result in paraneoplastic syndrome known as tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO). We report a case of bilateral osteoporotic femoral neck fracture caused by PMT. PMT was surgically resected, followed by sequential treatment of bilateral femoral neck fractures with total hip arthroplasty (THA). A 49-year-old perimenopausal woman experienced consistent bone pain with limb weakness persisting for over 2 years. Initially, she was diagnosed with early osteonecrosis of the femoral head and received nonsurgical treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor-induced osteomalacia is an acquired rare disease manifested by hypophosphatemic osteomalacia due to excessive secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). FGF 23 is a non-classical hormone secreted by bone tissue (osteocytes) and regulates phosphorus metabolism. The aim of this work is to present clinical experience in the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of patients with tumor-induced osteomalacia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 40 patients with clinically-confirmed tumor-induced osteomalacia were included in the study, 34 of whom had the tumor localized, 27 underwent

BACKGROUND: Tumour-induced osteomalacia (TIO) or oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare variant of paraneoplastic syndrome secondary to a small benign phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour that secretes phosphaturic substances. Complete tumour excision is often curative. However, the localization of these offending tumours has always remained a challenge because of their small size, slow-growing nature, and presence in atypical locations. We performed a systemic review and meta-analysis on the sensitivity and specificity of F-18 FDG PET/CT and Ga-68 DOTA-SSTR PET/CT to detect tumours causing osteomalacia.

Fibronectin is a glycoprotein found in body fluids, loose connective tissue matrix and in basement membranes. Fibronectin in pleural effusion was found to be immunologically indistinguishable from the plasma form, as shown by double-diffusion analysis. Fibronectin isolated from pleural fluid by affinity chromatography on gelatin-Sepharose had a polypeptide pattern similar to that of plasma fibronectin in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. In 28 patients with infectious or non-specific pleural effusion fibronectin concentrations in pleural fluid were 335 +/- 104 micrograms/ml (mean +/- SD)

Colposcopy plays an essential role in the diagnosis and treatment of dysplasias of the uterine cervix. It may be used to assess the lesions recognising dysplasia, observing the degree of severity and indicating regions from which biopsies should be taken. It accurately defines the limits of the lesions by indicating the site of the squamo-columnar junction, on the ectocervix or in the cervical canal. In association with Schiller's test, it defines the peripheral limits of the lesions on the cervix or vagina and leads to the discovery of purely vaginal lesions. On the basis of such an assessmen
