Mechanical behavior of carpal tunnel subsynovial connective tissue under compression.

Subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) is a fluid-permeated loose connective tissue that occupies the majority of the space in the carpal tunnel not occupied by the digital flexor tendons or the median nerve. It is arranged in layers around these more discrete structures, presumably to assist with tendon gliding. As a result of this arrangement, the compressive behavior and the fluid permeability of this tissue may substantially affect the stresses in the median nerve resulting from contact with its neighboring tendons or with the walls of the tunnel itself. These stresses may contribute to dama

Ficus carica L. (Fig) promotes nerve regeneration in a mouse model of sciatic nerve crush.

Peripheral nerve injuries result in significant loss of motor and sensory function, and the slow rate of nerve regeneration can prolong reco … promote nerve regeneration. Furthermore, the fig extract enhanced macrophage infiltration into the nerve tissue, suggesting that it could ameliorate nerve injury by promoting tissue repair via increased macrophage infiltration. The study provides valuable insights into the potential of the fig extract as a novel agent promoting nerve regeneration. Further inv …

Proteomics and systems biology in optic nerve regeneration.

We present an overview of current state of proteomic approaches as applied to optic nerve regeneration in the historical context of nerve regeneration particularly central nervous system neuronal regeneration. We present outlook pertaining to the optic nerve regeneration proteomics that the latter can extrapolate information from multi-systems level investigations. We present an account of the current need of systems level standardization for comparison of proteome from various models and across different pharmacological or biophysical treatments that promote adult neuron regeneration. We brie

Effects of irreversible electroporation on femoral nerves in a rabbit model.

INTRODUCTION: Irreversible electroporation (IRE) is a novel technique that uses a non-thermal ablation to avoid adjacent major structure inj … d two weeks (80-100%). Nerve fibers then recovered and were normalized at eight weeks. CONCLUSION: Nerve tissue injury with transient functional impairment can occur after IRE. However, endoneurial and epineurial extracellular matrix were preserved with Schwann cell regeneration, which could lead to regeneration of nerve tissues within eight weeks.

Simultaneous anterolateral thigh flap and temporalis tendon transfer to optimize facial form and function after radical parotidectomy.

Background Extirpation of aggressive parotid or cutaneous facial tumors often involves facial nerve sacrifice and the creation of a large soft-tissue defect. We describe a method for single-stage reconstruction during radical parotidectomy to restore facial form and function without additional morbidity. Methods We conducted a review of immediate reconstruction/reanimation of radical parotidectomy defects with the use of anterolateral thigh (ALT) fat and fascia flaps for facial contouring, orthodromic temporalis tendon transfer (OTTT), cable grafting of the facial nerve, and fascia lata lower

[Sensory neural innervation of adipose tissue in metabolic disorders].

The regulation of adipose tissue homeostasis is essential for maintaining energy and metabolism balance in the body. The peripheral nervous system plays a crucial role in this process. Previous related research primarily focused on the sympathetic nervous system and its release of norepinephrine, while recent attention has shifted to the field of adipose sensory nerves. Studies demonstrate that external stimuli can activate adipose sensory nerves through pathways involving transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1), adipokines, and fatty acids, thereby transmitting signals to the brain.

US Food and Drug Administration/Conformit Europe-approved absorbable nerve conduits for clinical repair of peripheral and cranial nerves.

Several absorbable nerve conduits are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Conformit Europe (CE) for clinical repair of peripheral and cranial nerves. Surgeons are often not aware of the different (bio)materials of these conduits when performing nerve repair. An overview of these FDA- and CE-approved absorbable nerve conduits for clinical use is presented. PubMed, MEDLINE, and the companies selling the conduits were consulted. The available FDA and CE absorbable nerve conduits for peripheral and cranial nerve repair are 2 collagen- and 2 synthetic-polyester-based conduits.

An add-on therapy for neuropathic pain: Infiltration block with diclofenac sodium and lidocaine through the hypertrophic scar tissue.

In some situations, the cause of the supposed neuropathic pain might be related to abnormal tissue recovery such as scar formation due to wound retraction that might create mechanical compression on the nerve tissue. In this report we describe infiltration block with diclofenac sodium and lidocaine through the hypertrophic scar tissue to reduce mechanical stress in 3 patients. The infiltration technique might resolve the tension of the contracted scar tissue by tearing the adhesions and the eliminated mechanical compression would reduce the pressure on nerve tissue and hence neuropathic pain s…

[Clinical use of a new method in microsurgical transplantation of peripheral nerves].

Due to its biophysical properties the CO2-laser has been mainly used for atraumatic incision of neural tissue or for ablative procedures like vaporisation of poorly vascularized tumors of the CNS. The possibility to use the thermal effect of laser energy to bond organic tissue, especially when a low energy CO2 laser working in the milliwatt range is employed, has emerged from recent experimental studies. The concept of laser assisted reconstructive procedures like anastomosis of vessels and nerves has been summarized under the concept of tissue welding. After extensive experimental studies inc

Effect of a preemptive femoral nerve block on cytokine release and hyperalgesia in experimentally inflamed skin of human volunteers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Tissue injury is associated with the local release of inflammatory and nociceptive mediators and the development of hyperalgesia. It is unclear whether interrupting neuronal signaling using regional anesthetic techniques at the time of the injury modifies local nociceptive and inflammatory processes. The aim of this study was to determine whether a peripheral nerve block at the time of tissue injury could modify the development of wound hyperalgesia and the local release of inflammatory and nociceptive mediators. METHODS: Twelve healthy volunteers participated in th

Local delivery of tacrolimus using electrospun poly-ϵ-caprolactone nanofibres suppresses the T-cell response to peripheral nerve allografts.

Objective.Repair of nerve gap injuries can be achieved through nerve autografting, but this approach is restricted by limited tissue supply and donor site morbidity. The use of living nerve allografts would provide an abundant tissue source, improving outcomes following peripheral nerve injury. Currently this approach is not used due to the requirement for systemic immunosuppression, to prevent donor-derived cells within the transplanted nerve causing an immune response, which is associated with severe adverse effects. The aim of this study was to develop a method for delivering immunosuppress

Re-innervation of pancreatic tissue implants in normal and in sympathetically denervated eyes of rats.

Embryonic, newborn and adult pancreatic tissue fragments were implanted into the anterior eye-chamber of rats of the same offspring to determine whether there is any difference in the pattern of their re-innervation. In another experiment the embryonic pancreatic tissue fragments were implanted into sympathetically denervated eyes of homologous rats. Newborn, adult and embryonic pancreatic tissue implants were removed under a stereo-microscope after 17, 45 and 53 days, respectively. The embryonic pancreatic tissue implants in denervated eyes were removed after 46 days. The implants were proces

Recent advancements in peripheral nerve-specific fluorescent compounds.

Nerve injury is a common complication of surgery. Accidental nerve damage or transection can lead to severe clinical symptoms including pain, numbness, paralysis and even expiratory dyspnoea. In recent years, with the rise of the field of fluorescence-guided surgery, researchers have discovered that nerve-specific fluorescent agents can serve as nerve markers in animals and can be used to guide surgical procedures and reduce the incidence of intraoperative nerve damage. Currently, researchers have begun to focus on biochemistry, materials chemistry and other fields to produce more neuro-specif

Quantification of the intrinsic neural plexus of the heart - The missing link in histological tissue analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The heart is under strict regulation of the autonomic nervous system, during which, in a healthy state, the effects of sympathetic and parasympathetic branches are balanced. In recent years, there has been increasing interest in pathological remodeling and outgrowth of cardiac autonomic nerves in relation to arrhythmogenesis. However, the small size of the cardiac nerves in relatively large tissues renders research using histological quantification of these nerves extremely challenging and usually relies on quantification of the nerve density in selected regions of in
