Neurophysiologic inhibition of strength following tactile stimulation of the skin.

A modified shoulder abduction manual muscle test was incorporated in this study to demonstrate strength changes following tactile stimulation of the skin. Resistance was applied to the distal radioulnar joint and the stimulus (scratching) was applied inferior to the clavicle on the clavicular head of the pectoralis major muscle after maximum contraction. An electromechanical device quantified the isotonic (eccentric) measurements. A standard dynamometer system (Cybex II) was used to measure isometric strength. The nondominant side was used as the "control." Two populations, a normal (random) a

Clinical, neurophysiological and morphological findings in Eaton Lambert syndrome.

Two patients with maysthenic syndrome apparently not associated with carcinoma were studied in detail with repetitive stimulation of motor nerves, single fibre electromyography and histology. One patient showed signs of widespread autonomic dysfunction and the other patient had multifocal CNS symptoms of unclear etiology. Both cases showed a marked improvement with guanidine treatment which could be documented by the electrophysiological investigations. Due to severe adverse effects of the guanidine treatment on kidney, pancreatic and bone marrow functions the drug had to be withdrawn. Edropho

Neurophysiological studies on central chemosensor in medullary ventrolateral areas.

Nonphasic unit potentials were recorded with glass microelectrodes from the ventrolateral medullary areas in spontaneously breathing cats. The firing rate changes were studied during metabolic acidosis and alkalosis induced by intravenous injections of 4 ml 0.1 N HCl and molar NaHCO3, respectively, and during CO2 rebreathing. Three groups of units were distinguished among 44 neurons: 1) 9 U were markedly sensitive to variations in acid-base parameters; each reacted in the opposite manner upon acidosis and alkalosis, and these reactions were reproducible. 2) Twelve units were responsive to touc

Linking cortical morphology and neurophysiological dynamics in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) involves progressive neurodegeneration and distinctive structural and functional alterations in cortico-basal ganglia circuits. This study proposes bridging the gap between structural and functional biomarkers to uncover fundamental mechanisms underlying PD pathophysiology and support more comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. This study analyzed intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) and globus pallidus internus (GPi) local field potential (LFP) recordings alongside preoperative T1-weighted structural MRI from 50 patients with PD undergoing deep bra

Neurophysiological profiling of emotional and cognitive states in healthy individuals.

Emotions play a fundamental role in shaping human cognition and behavior, profoundly affecting the way we perceive, evaluate, and respond to our environment. Although extensive research has examined how the brain processes visual emotional stimuli, less is known about neural mechanisms related to emotional imagination and the processing of varying emotional and cognitive states. This study aims to address this gap by looking into brain activity using Electroencephalography (EEG) in response to emotional auditory inputs. Thirty-one healthy participants listened to neutral, positive, negative, a

Decoding concealed information using multimodal neurophysiological signals.

Detecting concealed information is a critical challenge in forensic investigations, security screening, and cognitive neuroscience. Conventional approaches using the concealed information test primarily rely on binary classification, distinguishing between recognized (concealed) and unrecognized (neutral) stimuli. This limits interpretability and fails to reveal the nature of the concealed knowledge. In this pilot study, we present a novel multimodal framework that moves beyond binary detection by decoding the category of concealed information into object, person, or place based on neurophysio

Neurophysiological potentials mediating the influence of social support on pain.

The supportive presence of a significant other can act as an efficient analgesic. However, neurophysiological mechanisms of this effect have not been adequately explored. The current EEG study, using electrical pain stimulation, explored neurophysiological mechanisms mediating the influence of romantic partner's presence on acute pain perceptions. Female participants (N = 41, mean age = 27.44, SD = 7.93) were exposed to painful stimuli in two alternating conditions: a) while receiving support from a male romantic partner via a live camera interaction and b) in the absence of partner support. Role of Neurophysiologic Testing in Prognostication of Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy.

Electroencephalography (EEG) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) are important components of multimodal prognostication in comatose patients after cardiac arrest (CA). The EEG changes considerably during the first days after CA. The prognostic value of some EEG patterns is time-dependent, whereas that of others is not. Persistence of burst-suppression with heterogeneous (variable) bursts and generalized suppression (<10 µV) ≥24 hours after CA strongly predicts poor outcome. Burst-suppression with identical or highly epileptiform bursts and periodic discharges on a suppressed background

Sleep and psychosis: An integrative review of conceptual and neurophysiological associations.

The association between sleep-related phenomena and psychosis has received increasing attention in recent years, as sleep disturbances (e.g., insomnia) have shown robust associations with psychotic symptoms. However, the role of other, more specific sleep processes in psychosis remains unclear, despite their potential importance as symptom-related correlates. Particularly, phenomena such as dreaming and hypnagogic experiences may share certain phenomenological features with hallucination-like experiences. Given that both sleep and psychosis involve complex neural systems, examining their neuro

Neurophysiological correlates of user engagement in mixed reality exergames.

Objective. This study investigates the neurophysiological correlates of user engagement (UE) during upper-limb exercises in mixed reality (MR)-based exergames. It explores whether MR environments modulate brain activity differently than traditional exercises and whether physical object interaction affects engagement.Methods.High-density electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded from fifteen healthy adults performing bilateral arm exercises under four conditions-with and without MR and physical object interaction. Engagement indices were derived from spectral features (theta, alpha, and their ra

[Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring in surgery for spinal intramedullary tumors].

Despite modern advances in neurosurgery, treatment of intramedullary spinal cord tumors is still associated with postoperative neurological impairment and high incidence of adverse outcomes. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring allows real-time functional assessment of spinal cord conduction pathways and accurate tumor resection. Currently, concomitant monitoring of somatosensory and motor evoked potentials, as well as D-wave is the most common. This excludes damage to both sensory and motor pathways. In modern literature, there are some differences in methods of intraoperative neuroph

Experimental pain modulation via hypnosis: Neurophysiological perspectives.

This chapter reviews key electrophysiological and neuroimaging findings on the neural mechanisms underlying hypnosis and its modulation of experimentally induced pain, with an emphasis on the roles of hypnotizability and the content of suggestions. Highly hypnotizable (HH) individuals consistently report reduced pain and emotional distress under hypnotic hypoalgesia, although effects on somatosensory-evoked potentials (SERPs) vary due to methodological differences in induction techniques and experimental paradigms. EEG time-frequency analyses and oscillatory studies offer more consistent resul
