Noonan phenotype in the basal cell nevus syndrome.

In this report we present a three-generation family in which five members present the basal cell nevus syndrome. In three of them a Noonan phenotype was present. The basal cell nervus syndrome is another example of a neural crest dysplasia associated with a Noonan-like phenotype. This observation supports the theory that the autosomal dominant mutation causing the neural crest dysplasia may lead to a Noonan-like phenotype.

Treatment of nevus comedonicus with ammonium lactate lotion.

A patient with an extensive nevus comedonicus, which is associated frequently with the development of large inflammatory cysts and abscesses within the nevus, responded dramatically within 1 month to a once-daily application of 12% ammonium lactate lotion. A marked beneficial effect on the comedonal component of the nevus was noted. One inflammatory cyst has developed in an area left untreated by the patient, but none have occurred in treated areas since therapy with ammonium lactate lotion was begun. Previous treatments, which were either ineffective or of minimal effectiveness, included oral…

Blue nevus of the endocervix. A study of five cases.

The pathologic and immunohistochemical features of 5 cases of blue nevus of the endocervix are presented: 4 of them were studied ultrastructurally. The lesions were incidentaly discovered at microscopic examination and showed pigmented dendritic cells in the cervical stroma. Immunocytochemical examination showed all cases to be positive for S-100 protein. Ultrastructurally they contained melanosomes, were surrounded by a basement membrane, and displayed occasional desmosome-like devices. Histogenesis is discussed, and support for a schwannian origin is presented.

[Epidermal nevus syndrome (of Solomon, Fretzin and Dewald)].

Epidermal naevus syndrome is an entity which has been well established by Solomon, Fretzin and Dewald since 1968, presenting cutaneous, visceral, ocular, osseous and neurological malformations. We report a case with multiple osseous manifestations affecting the entire skeleton, but mainly the skull (osteolysis with absence of frontal bone), the vertebral column (scoliosis with triple deviation), the upper right limb (demineralisation and multiple pathological fractures) and lower members (fractures of the right and left femur) with enlargement of the entire ventricular system and well marked s

[Becker's nevus associated with a smooth muscle hamartoma].

A new case of Becker's nevus associated with smooth muscle hamartoma is reported. This is the third case reported in the literature. The different associations reported in the Becker's nevus give support to the mesenchymal-epithelial interactions.

Mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body associated with a nevus.

A ciliary body tumor that was believed clinically to be a malignant melanoma developed in a 28-year-old woman and led to enucleation of her … supports the applicability of these embryologic discoveries to man. The association of a pigmented nevus with the present tumor is additional evidence of the neural crest origin of mesectodermal leiomyomas, since melanocytes are well-recognized descendants from the neural crest.

Postzygotic NRAS Variants and Subsequent Copy-Neutral Loss of Heterozygosity Underlie Speckled-Pattern Formation in Nevus Spilus-Type Congenital Melanocytic Nevus.

Nevus spilus-type congenital melanocytic nevus (NS-CMN) is characterized by a background brown macule with superimposed black macules or plaques; however, the mechanism underlying speckled-pattern formation in human skin remains unclear. We performed clinicopathological and molecular analyses of three NS-CMN cases using multiple biopsies from background and superimposed components. The epidermis and dermis were separated before DNA extraction, followed by whole-exome sequencing, Sanger sequencing of NRAS codons 13 and 61, and single-nucleotide polymorphism array analysis. In one patient, melan…

Port-wine-stain (nevus flammeus), congenital Becker's nevus, café-au-lait-macule and lentigines: phakomatosis pigmentovascularis type Ia--a new combination.

A 16-year-old male had brown macules in a geographic pattern with increased terminal hair on the back and dusky red partially blanchable non progressing macules on his left thigh since birth. Clinical diagnoses of Becker's nevus and port-wine-stain were made and confirmed histopathologically. In addition, he had multiple lentigines on the face and trunk and a single café-au-lait-macule on his chest.

Cellular blue nevus simulating metastatic melanoma: report of an unusually large lesion associated with nevus-cell aggregates in regional lymph nodes.

A young Caucasian woman had a large area of blue-gray discoloration on the flank and palpable axillary lymph nodes. The discolored area had enlarged during a recent pregnancy, contained multiple subcutaneous nodules, demonstrated increased cellularity and mitotic activity, and was associated with an axillary lymph node containing black streaks within the capsule. Although the lesion was initially considered to be a metastatic malignant melanoma, re-evaluation showed it to be a benign cellular blue nevus with benign nevus-cell aggregates within a regional lymph node. We report this case to emph…

Connective tissue nevus misdiagnosed as juvenile localized scleroderma.

BACKGROUND: Connective tissue nevi (CTN) are congenital hamartomas caused by excessive proliferation of dermis components. In children, CTN can mimic juvenile localized scleroderma (JLS), an immune mediated skin disorder that requires aggressive immunosuppression. OBJECTIVES: Aim of our study was to describe a series of pediatric patients with CTN misdiagnosed as JLS and the discerning characteristics between the two conditions. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of children referred to our Center during the last two decades for JLS who received a final diagnosis of CTN. Clinical, laboratory, h

Bilateral Systematised Epidermolytic Epidermal Nevus: A case report.

Verrucous epidermal nevi (VEN) are benign congenital hamartomas consisting of keratinocytes. Histological examination mostly exhibits hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, papillomatosis and, rarely, the features of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis (EHK). We report a case of a 6-year-old boy who presented at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan with bilaterally symmetrical linear epidermal nevi following Blaschko's lines and showing epidermolytic hyperkeratosis on histology. The patient was treated with topical keratolytics and emolients which led to considerable improvement. To the best of the a

Basal cell nevus syndrome: From DNA to therapeutics.

Basal cell nevus syndrome, also known as Gorlin syndrome, is a hereditary cancer syndrome associated with multiple basal cell carcinomas, congenital defects, and nondermatologic tumors. This disease is autosomal dominant with variable expressivity and is caused by abnormalities in the sonic hedgehog signaling pathway. Management requires a multidisciplinary approach and should include the biopsychosocial needs of patients and their families. Genetic testing is necessary to confirm an unclear diagnosis, evaluate at-risk relatives, and assist with family planning.
