In spite of steep elevation of cancer mortality in the aged, it has been believed that ageing reduces susceptibility to carcinogens. Ebbesen, however, presented contradictory result recently. AIM: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS), a cluster of serious medical conditions that raise the risk of lung cancer, has increased worldwide. Tobacco smoking (TS) potentially increases the risk of developing MetS. Despite the potential association of MetS with lung cancer, preclinical models that mimic human diseases, including TS-induced MetS, are limited. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In our laboratory, we have developed a new model of carcinoma of the bile duct in Syrian golden hamsters, using N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP). Morphologic and biologic characteristics of the carcinoma induced in this model are similar to those seen in humans. The development of renal tubular cell tumors by the end of experimental week 32 was studied in inbred Wistar male rats fed a diet containing 1,000 or 500 ppm N-ethyl-N-hydroxyethylnitrosamine (EHEN) for 2 weeks and then given 1,00 ppm basic lead acetate (LA) for 20 weeks.
