Immunisation attitudes, knowledge and practices of health professionals in regional NSW.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the immunisation knowledge, attitudes and practices among health professionals in two regional Area Health Services of NSW with low and high immunisation rates. It also compared these factors between the areas and between the health professional groups. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was posted in 2006 to health professionals, located within the North Coast and Hunter New England Area Health Services, whose practice could include immunisation. This included general practitioners (GPs), practice nurses, community nurses, hospital nurses and midwiv

Redesigning ecosystems for all children to enhance health and well-being: An American Academy of Nursing consensus paper.

Although there have been many changes to community and family structure, and advances in scientific understanding of children's health and wellbeing, there has been little difference in how healthcare is delivered to children. The focus is often a deficit approach to acute situations. Halfon's Life Course Health Development Theory (LCHDT) focuses on a holistic approach to health and well-being. In the LCHDT, one's health is impacted by specific contexts during childhood that have a lasting impact. Key areas of family, community, schools, environment, and healthcare systems impart positive and

Getting ahead of head lice.

Dermatologists are the nominal experts in the management of head lice in Australia, yet many dermatologists infrequently treat patients with this condition. Most people are managed in the community by school nurses, local council health officers, pharmacists, paediatricians or general practitioners. Only a small number will present to the dermatologist and commonly these patients will have tried a variety of treatments and failed to respond. Resistance is reported to all of the currently available insecticide treatments and this makes management of this common community-acquired infestation mo

Two Nursing Outreach Interventions to Engage Vulnerable Populations in Care.

People experiencing substance use disorders, homelessness, mental health conditions, or poverty often have difficultly engaging in healthcare services particularly prevention services. This brief report describes two nursing interventions implemented by nursing students that aim to empower vulnerable populations and draw them into care using empathetic and patient-centered approaches. The first intervention uses street outreach with naloxone training in an area of Baltimore experiencing a high rate of overdose deaths. The second uses home or street outreach to link people living with HIV to HI

Implementation of Simulation: A Contemporary Strategy to Enhance Clinical Skills of Undergraduate Students in Mental Health Nursing.

Simulation is an innovative teaching strategy that supports student centered learning. It improves therapeutic communication skills with clients. Additionally, it enhances critical thinking, problem solving, and confidence among students, in a non-threatening and safe environment, without posing a risk to actual patients. This paper describes the process of application of simulation for undergraduate nursing students enrolled in a mental health nursing course. The project aimed to determine the significance of simulation to improve the communication skills and confidence level, and to decrease

Providing nursing care for a Chagga client of Tanzania.

A case study is used to present features of a cultural assessment of the Chagga tribe. The purpose is to identify guidelines for provision of culturally congruent nursing care. "Mrs. Chuwa" lives on the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Daily survival is a major concern; the extended family is an important source of support. Traditional beliefs have a major impact on her life; traditional practitioners are alternative resources to dispensaries and clinics. Nurses providing care for Chaggas need to be aware of how important it is to communicate with respect, to obtain an accurate treatment history, and

Integrating Holistic Communication into Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies in Hospice and Palliative Care: An Approach Based on Peplau's Theory.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has shown promising results in alleviating psychological and existential suffering among individuals with serious illnesses. In parallel, nursing offers a robust theoretical framework to guide therapeutic communication in this context. This article explores the application of Peplau's Theory of Interpersonal Relations (PTIR) as a foundation for holistic communication in PAT, particularly in hospice and palliative care. We examine how PTIR's core concepts (person, health, environment, and nursing) along with its articulation of therapeutic roles, phases of the

Patient-Reported Outcome and Experience Measures (PROMs and PREMs) in Pressure Injury Prevention and Care Across European Hospital and Community Nursing Settings: A Scoping Review.

Pressure injuries are a frequent and largely preventable adverse event across the whole care continuum, from intensive and acute hospital wards to community and home settings. Internationally, they are graded with the objective European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel and National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (EPUAP/NPIAP) staging system. Staging describes the tissue rather than the person. How patients experience each stage is captured by patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), and how they experience prevention is captured by patient-reported experience measures (PREMs). Both may be recor

Community-Based Follow-Up After NICU Discharge: A Practice-Focused Narrative Review of Nursing and Midwifery Care for Preterm Infants.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Preterm birth remains a significant global public health challenge, associated with increased morbidity, rehospitalisation, and long-term vulnerability. The transition from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to the home environment represents a critical phase. This practice-focused narrative review synthesises current evidence on community-based post-discharge follow-up for preterm infants, with particular emphasis on the complementary contribution of community health nursing and midwifery within multidisciplinary follow-up models, endocrine-metabolic surveillance a

[Granting extended responsibilities to nurses and pharmacists--is it desirable and possible?].

UNLABELLED: In the recent past, changes have occurred that have increased the overall burden on health services, particularly in the community. It has also become apparent that Israel stands at the threshold of a significant doctor deficit which will become a problem within a decade. The first signs are already noticeable, in a shortfall of residents in some specialties. The possibility of granting certain extended responsibilities to nurses and pharmacists, could reduce potential distress, and improve the quality of care, its availability and patient satisfaction. Health Status, Living Arrangements, and Service Use at 100: Findings From the Oporto Centenarian Study.

This paper describes the sociodemographic characteristics, health status, and service use of centenarians living in the community and centenarians residing in an elder care facility/nursing home and examines their main differences. Participants were 140 centenarians from the population-based Oporto Centenarian Study (Mage = 101.2; SD = 1.6). Main findings revealed that the majority of the centenarians lived at home with their family members (57.9%). Increased health care needs, living alone, and family caregiving constraints were the most common reasons for entering a nursing home. Community-d

Necrotizing fasciitis in primary care: presentation, risk factors and treatment.

Necrotizing skin infections, although rare, have proven difficult to manage and treat in a wide range of patient groups. The risks of extensive tissue necrosis, systemic sepsis and potentially organ failure make this disease one which health-care professionals must be aware of. Treatment involves rapid debridement and intensive therapy including broad spectrum antibiotics. Appropriate wound care is essential as is a great deal of psychological support for the patient and relatives. This article also highlights some of the risk factors which may pre-dispose a patient to infection.

Designing a Patient-Centered Interdisciplinary Intervention to Promote Equitable Access to Kidney Transplantation across Health Systems: The STEPS Study.

In the United States, health inequities persist in the management of chronic kidney disease and end-stage kidney disease, including unequal access to kidney transplantation. These disparities are deeply rooted in complex social and structural determinants of health, including socioeconomic status, race, geographic location, and healthcare access. Addressing these inequities necessitates a patient-centered interdisciplinary approach to improve outcomes and promote transplant access equity. This article describes the conceptualization and design of the System Interventions to Achieve Early and E

Mapping Geospatial Gaps in Early Identification of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Despite the known developmental benefits of early intervention for autism spectrum disorder (ASD), diagnosis before age 5 years is often not achieved. Research suggests that lack of health insurance and living in rural areas and areas of severe provider shortages contribute significantly to these delays. The purpose of this project was to conduct a geospatial evaluation of potential gaps in early ASD diagnosis of uninsured children in Virginia. A secondary purpose was to show the use of geospatial analysis by pediatric nurse practitioners for policy advocacy. We mapped data from a statewide pr
