Early enteral feeding after injury is important for maintenance of gut integrity. However, enteral nutrients are frequently administered at low rates because of decreased gastrointestinal motility. Eighty-five consecutive general hospital patients requiring total parenteral nutrition (TPN) were prospectively studied in order to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a '3-in-1' nutrient mixture. Oxygen consumption is a direct functional readout of bacterial respiration and metabolic state, yet existing methods for quantifying oxygen dynamics are limited in throughput and temporal resolution.
