Occupational burnout among healthcare professionals in China: departmental differences, modifiable correlates, and public health intervention strategies.

BACKGROUND: Burnout is a critical threat to healthcare workforce stability and patient care quality globally, and it has evolved into a major public health concern in China due to unique systemic pressures. However, data on specialty-specific burnout differences-especially between high-stress fields like internal medicine and psychiatry-remain limited. This study aimed to characterize burnout prevalence, departmental variations, and factors associated with burnout among healthcare professionals in Jining, China, to inform targeted public health intervention hypotheses. METHODS: A multicenter

Modeling Heterogeneity in Health Risk Behaviors With a Dynamic Mixture Model Informed by Textual Occupational Data.

Health risk behaviors, including smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol misuse, and physical inactivity (SNAP), are leading contributors to chronic disease burden and healthcare costs worldwide. Their prevalence is shaped not only by individual demographic characteristics but also by contextual factors such as socioeconomic and occupational environments. We develop a Bayesian topic-informed dynamic mixture model to analyze SNAP behaviors using data from the Italian health and behavioral surveillance system PASSI. Free-text occupational descriptions are integrated through structural topic modeling to

Occupational health challenges among university security personnel in a low-resource setting: a qualitative exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: University security personnel in low-resource settings are among the most occupationally vulnerable non-academic staff yet they remain largely absent from occupational health research. This study investigated how university security officers in Ghana perceive and navigate occupational health challenges associated with burnout and shift-related stress. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study rooted in interpretive phenomenology was conducted between July and August 2025 at a public university in southern Ghana. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 purposively select…

Psychosocial Safety Climate and Occupational Health Outcomes Among Lone and Non-Lone Workers in the U.S.

OBJECTIVE: Examine associations between psychosocial safety climate (PSC), occupational stress, and injury risk among lone workers (LWs) and non-LWs in the United States. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of representative General Social Survey data. LWs were identified using a systematic approach. Logistic regression assessed associations between PSC and outcomes, including PSC-by-worker-type interaction terms, adjusting for demographic, health, and employment factors. RESULTS: Each 1 SD increase in PSC was associated with 45% reduced odds of stress (OR=0.55, 95% CI: 0.48-0.63) and 22% redu

Integrating environmental factors and genetic variants in machine learning to assess occupational noise impact on health.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a complex disorder arising from the interplay between noise, as well as contributions from other environmental and genetic risk factors. Although occupational noise exposure is a well-established risk factor, the extent to which other variables contribute remains poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the nonlinear relationships among these variables using several machine learning algorithms, and to evaluate the relative contributions of environmental and genetic factors to the development of occupational NIHL. Data were collected from 2077 ship

Occupational therapists' experiences in Australia's primary mental health funding scheme: Navigating complexity in a constrained system.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational therapists in the Australian context provide significant value to mental health, including through Better Access, a Medicare initiative that gives individuals access to up to 10 sessions with a psychologist, social worker, or occupational therapist following a referral from a medical practitioner. However, the experiences of occupational therapists working under the initiative are not widely understood, with no recent occupational therapy-specific research. This study aims to explore the experiences of occupational therapists working under Better Access, their distin

Spatial analysis of asbestos exposure and occupational health care in Poland during the period 2004-2013.

Asbestos is carcinogenic to humans and exposure to this substance can cause a wide range of diseases. In Poland 1997, a statutory ban was introduced on the production, use and marketing of products containing asbestos. The National Programme for Asbestos Abatement for 2009-2032 includes scheduled activities considering asbestos exposure assessment and health protection. As there are several data sources for asbestos exposure in Poland, which are not linked, the aim of this study was to gather and order them developing a PostgreSQL database, an open-source, objectrelational system. The data gat

Opportunistic insights into occupational health hazards associated with waterpipe tobacco smoking premises in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Smokefree laws aim to protect employees and the public from the dangers of secondhand smoke. Waterpipe premises have significantly increased in number in the last decade, with anecdotal reports of poor compliance with the smokefree law. The literature is bereft of information pertaining to waterpipe premise employees. This study aimed to opportunistically gather knowledge about the occupational health hazards associated with working in waterpipe premises in London, England. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Employees from seven convenience-sampled, smokefree-compliant waterpipe premises in L…
