Previous studies have shown the benefit of sputum purulence screens in routine bacterial culture. We have correlated 944 sputum smear and Legionella pneumophila culture results and demonstrated that 47 to 84% of L. pneumophila-positive samples would have been discarded by using established sputum purulence screens. We recommend acceptance of all specimens submitted for Legionella culture.

There are many reviews of pediatric orbital tumors in the literature. Most of the series originated from the tumor registries of large pathology referral centers, whereas others are from large medical institutions and pediatric hospitals. We conducted a prospective cohort study of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and breast cancer among 32,505 women in central Ohio, USA. After 5 years of follow-up, a total of 393 cases have been detected. The annual incidence of breast cancer per 100,00 women varied inversely with increasing intake of NSAIDs, declining from 323 among non-users to 183 among heavy users (p<0.01). Breast cancer rates decreased by about 50% with regular ibuprofen intake (p<0.01), and by about 40% with regular aspirin intake (p<0.05). For the past 25 years, halothane has been the primary anesthetic agent at Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. To confirm our impression that adverse reactions to halothane are rarely a problem in children, we examined the records of 200,311 cases conducted with halothane from June 1, 1958, through May 31, 1983. Life-threatening complications due to side effects were identified in fifteen patients, and could be grouped into three areas: hepatitis (one), malignant hyperthermia (ten), and cardiac arrhythmias (four).
