Optimization and characterization of the formation of oil-in-water diazinon nanoemulsions: Modeling and influence of the oil phase, surfactant and sonication.

Nanoemulsions are particularly suitable as a platform in the development of delivery systems for lipophilic functional agents. Current research describes the formation of oil-in-water (O/W) diazinon nanoemulsions using synthetic and natural additives by adopting a high-energy (ultrasound) emulsification method. The diazinon nanoemulsions were spontaneously formed by adding dropwise a mixture of diazinon, solvent and co-solvent in an aqueous solution containing a surfactant (tween or lecithin) with continuous stirring. The nanoemulsions were then formed by ultra-sonication. The effects of three

Inferior peripheral iridectomy in patients receiving silicone oil. Rates of postoperative closure and effect on oil position.

BACKGROUND: Silicone oil tamponade is used in treating retinal detachments, but silicone-associated complications remain frequent. Keratopathy and acute pupillary block glaucoma are related to migration of silicone oil into the anterior chamber. Since 1985, many surgeons have created an inferior peripheral iridectomy (PI) at the time of surgery to prevent forward migration of the oil, but the rate of postoperative closure of the PI and the effect on oil position have not been well defined. METHODS: The charts of 292 patients undergoing silicone oil surgery were reviewed. The status of the PI

Analysis of Chain Matching between Organic Additives and Base Oils Using Molecular Dynamics Simulation.

Organic friction modifiers (OFMs) play a key role in decreasing the friction between two solid contacts. OFM additive molecules are composed of alkyl chains with polar groups at the end. The metal surface and the molecules form a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). The concept of "chain matching" is known in the context of boundary lubrication; a good load-carrying capacity of an OFM film is achieved when the chain lengths of the fatty acid additives and the base oil are equal. Although this idea is supported by experiments, the precise mechanism at the molecular level has yet to be understood. In

Natural oils based nanoform of chlorantraniliprole for sustainable management of Helicoverpa armigera in tomato.

Chlorantraniliprole is an anthranilic diamide insecticide that has both contact and systemic action and is commonly used to manage lepidopteran pests. However, its natural hydrophobicity and poor solubility limit the creation of effective and eco-friendly formulations. In the current study, high energy ultra-sonication power was used to create natural oil-based and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) based nanoemulsions, which were then compared to commercial suspension concentrate (SC) formulation of chlorantraniliprole. The natural oil-based nanoemulsion had a particle size of 98 nm and indicated high

From Composition to Shelf Life: Oxidative Deterioration Trajectories of Monovarietal Extra Virgin Olive Oils.

The commercial shelf life of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is commonly expressed as a fixed best-before period, although its actual duration may differ considerably among oils. This study investigated the chemical, volatile and sensory evolution of six filtered monovarietal Italian EVOOs during 16 months of controlled storage to identify initial compositional factors associated with cultivar-dependent shelf life. Oils were bottled in dark glass and stored at 15 ± 1 °C. Initial chemical composition was determined, while volatile fingerprints by PTR-ToF-MS and IOC sensory characteristics were mo…

Extraction of astaxanthin from fresh Haematococcus pluvialis biomass: a sustainable approach using vegetable oils.

In this study, we developed an optimized process targeting the key challenges in extracting astaxanthin from fresh H. pluvialis biomass. First, we compared the effectiveness of several commonly used cell disruption methods (acidic and alkaline hydrolysis, ultrasound, enzymatic treatment, and freeze-thaw cycles) on astaxanthin yield and quality. We then evaluated the effects of polar (alcohols: methanol, ethanol, and glycerol) and non-polar solvents (argan, cannabis, and olive oils) on astaxanthin extraction under different conditions (temperature and extraction time). Alkaline treatment with 1…

Essential oils modulate virulence phenotypes in a multidrug-resistant pyomelanogenic Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolate.

Pyomelanogenic P. aeruginosa, frequently isolated from patients with urinary tract infections and cystic fibrosis, possesses the ability to withstand oxidative stress, contributing to virulence and resulting in persistent infections. Whole genome sequence analysis of U804, a pyomelanogenic, multidrug-resistant, clinical isolate, demonstrates the mechanism underlying pyomelanin overproduction. Seven essential oils (EOs) were screened for pyomelanin inhibition. Garlic, cinnamon and thyme EOs were selected for further studies based on their significant anti-virulent properties, like inhibition of…
