To enhance the qualitative information gained by photographing the optic nerve head, we built a silicon photovoltaic detector (photodiode) in the image plane of a fundus camera (Zeiss). It permitted quantitative evaluation of the relative brightness of the illuminated papilla. Following construction of the device and during the early course of more than 260 measurement sessions (on more than 130 subjects), several heretofore unknown sources of error were encountered and subsequently dealt with, resulting in a margin of error for the entire system of between 0.3% and 1.2%. Sixty tilted discs were studied by colour photography, including some by fluorescein angiography. Attention was drawn to the contracted, D-shaped outline of the scleral canal, and it was suggested that fewer fibres than normal enter the defective side of the disc. This was supported by examination of the nerve fibre layer and the discovery of field defects in 13 of the 27 eyes in which the visual fields were examined. The similarity of these features with congenital hypoplasia of the optic nerve head was noted.

Computerized pallor measurements of the optic nervehead were performed by global analysis with the Rodenstock Disk Analyzer. Total intervideographic and intravideographic variability was calculated. The coefficients of variation ranged from 8.3% to 20.08% for intervideographic variability of different pallor histogram values. The intravideographic variability for pallor histogram values ranged from 0.82% to 2.94%.

Characteristics of ocular blood flow (OBF) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in eyes with optic disc drusen have been investigated. Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a condition of elevated intracranial pressure commonly seen in obese women of childbearing age. We report the discovery of the inner edge of the high velocity CO outflow associated with the bipolar jet originating from IRS 1 in Barnard 5 and the first ever resolution of its circumstellar disk in the 2.6 mm dust continuum and C18O.
