BACKGROUND: Bone density at the interradicular area plays an important role during orthodontic treatment. In view of this fact, the study was designed to quantitatively evaluate the bone density at the interradicular areas of the alveolar and basal bones of maxilla and mandible by computed tomography.
METHODS: One hundred and nine computed tomographic images were randomly selected, and bone density was measured in Hounsfield units (HU) with bone mineral density software (Siemens VA20A_SP3A). The sample consisted of 78 males (mean age 29.5 years, range 20 to 40 years) and 31 females (mean age

The aim of this clinical and confocal laser scanning microscopic study was to compare the effects of two frequently used archwires on tooth movement and root resorption. A total of 84 premolars in 27 individuals (10 boys, 17 girls, with a mean age of 12.5 years) was moved buccally with an experimental fixed orthodontic appliance. In a split mouth experimental design the premolar on one side was activated with a stainless steel wire with a buccal offset of 1 mm, which was reactivated every four weeks and the contralateral premolar was moved with a superelastic wire with a force plateau of 0.8-1

A system of therapy for improving nasal breathing, sucking ability, chewing, swallowing, speech and orofacial muscle function is described. The therapeutic exercises do not require conscious cooperation, so they can be used with very young or handicapped children. Novel strategies for helping children overcome damaging oral habits are detailed. Patterns of collaboration between therapist and orthodontist are described for specific malocclusions.

This article examines the characteristics of hypodivergent craniofacial patterns and explores treatment modalities in response to these features. It discusses the impact of robust masticatory muscles, which produce heavy occlusal forces. In addition, it examines the use of Botox or splints to reduce gonial angles in individuals with a square face. A nonextraction treatment approach supported by temporary skeletal anchorage devices is recommended; however, if anatomical limitations persist, extraction may be necessary when arch expansion, molar distalization, incisor proclination, or interproxi

Background and Objectives: The key factor that enables osteoblastic activity and the formation of new bone, as well as gingiva, during orthodontic tooth extrusion (OE) is the periodontal ligament. The reaction of periodontal tissues associated with changes in the gingiva is a part of orthodontic tooth displacement. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of OE on the width of the zone of the keratinized and attached gingiva, the position of the mucogingival junction, and the height of the interdental papillae in the region where the OE was performed as well as in the adjacent region. Oligodontia can be isolated or syndromic, associated with other ectodermal abnormalities. The aim of the study was to perform hair examination in orthodontic patients diagnosed with oligodontia with a low clinical expression of symptoms of ectodermal origin. All available orthodontic patients diagnosed with oligodontia in the permanent dentition were enrolled. Hair examination included clinical evaluation of the patients' hair, trichoscopy, trichogram and evaluation of the hair shafts under a polarized light microscope. In total, 25 patients, 18 males and 7 females, aged 6 to 24 years were eva

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) represents a dynamic process in which the alveolar bone undergoes resorption at compression sites and deposition at tension sites, orchestrated by osteoclasts and osteoblasts, respectively. This mechanism serves as a valuable model for studying various aspects of bone adaptation, including root resorption and the cellular response to mechanical force stimuli. The protocol outlined here offers a straightforward approach to investigate OTM, establishing 0.35 N as the optimal force in a mouse model employing a nickel-titanium (NiTi) coil spring. BACKGROUND: Thalassaemia is a quantitative abnormality of haemoglobin caused by mutations in genes controlling production of alpha or beta globins. Abnormally unpaired globin chains cause membrane damage and cell death within organ systems and destruction of erythroid precursors in the bone marrow, leading to haemolytic anaemia. The life-long management of the general health effects of thalassaemia is highly challenging, and failure to deal with dental and orthodontic complications exacerbates the public health, financial and personal burden of the condition. There is a lack of evidence-based

Orthodontics is a discipline that is based on aesthetics. It coordinates the relationship among nose, lip, and chin through the movement of teeth and the adjustment of jaw relationship. Orthodontists need to fully analyze the patient's soft tissue profile before treatment. They also need to analyze the existing problems and those that may be solved or caused during orthodontics to guide the design of orthodontic treatment and effectively improve the clinical effect of orthodontics. This article reviews the aesthetic preconditions that guide the design of orthodontic treatment from the perspect…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the role of the immune cells and their interaction with cells found in gingiva, periodontal ligament, and bone that leads to net bone loss in periodontitis or bone remodeling in orthodontic tooth movement.
RECENT FINDINGS: Periodontal disease is one of the most common oral diseases causing inflammation in the soft and hard tissues of the periodontium and is initiated by bacteria that induce a host response. Although the innate and adaptive immune response function cooperatively to prevent bacterial dissemination, they also play a major role in gingival inflammatio

It is believed that the limits of orthodontic tooth movement are defined by strict physiologic and anatomic boundaries of periodontal tissue. Excessive tooth movement may result in alveolar bone dehiscence and/or fenestration, or root resorption. Andrews' six elements of orofacial harmony theory may serve as an efficient tool to guide orthodontists to decide proper torque of all tooth, so as to keep the roots from insulting cortical bone. It is worth noting that when palatal expansion is executed, the proper torque control of posterior segments is of importance and, when incisor retraction is

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the impact of a single piezocision in the maxillary alveolar process on the speed of tooth movement. The null hypothesis was that the speed of tooth movement will be equal with and without piezocision.
METHODS: All maxillary molars on one side were moved against the combined incisors in 10 ten-week-old male Wistar rats. Under general anesthesia, a force of 25 cN was applied on either side using a Sentalloy closed coil spring. After placing the orthodontic appliance, vertical corticision was performed using a piezotome under local anesthesia, 2 mm mesial from

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive periodontitis causes periodontal destruction, with loss of supporting alveolar bone. The common symptom is rapid attachment loss in the first molar and incisor area, in young adults.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to discuss the challenges, implications and the impact of orthodontic treatment in patients affected by severe periodontal problems, specifically aggressive periodontitis.
DISCUSSION: In addition to other bacteria, the main pathogen involved in aggressive periodontitis is the Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. However, the susceptibility to the di

BACKGROUND: Crowded teeth develop when there is not enough space in the jaws into which the teeth can erupt. Crowding can affect baby teeth (deciduous dentititon), adult teeth (permanent dentition), or both, and is a common reason for referral to an orthodontist. Crowded teeth can affect a child's self-esteem and quality of life. Early loss of baby teeth as a result of tooth decay or trauma, can lead to crowded permanent teeth. Crowding tends to increase with age, especially in the lower jaw.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of orthodontic intervention for preventing or correcting crowded te

Preparation and planning for orthognathic surgery in late adolescence depends on the complexity of unresolved problems with which the patient presents. Different strategies are presented to address these unresolved problems in the adult patient with cleft lip and palate. Different surgical and orthodontic treatments are presented to correct the class III malocclusion in patients with cleft lip and palate in ranges that are analogous to the envelope of discrepancy. For complex cases, the principles of achievability, stability, and esthetics should guide the decision-making process for planning
