INTRODUCTION: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the different factors influencing the perception of female profile facial bea … s changed from 0 to +10 degrees with 5 degrees increments. A total of 320 raters (107 dentists, 103 orthodontists and 110 laypeople) scored the attractiveness of the different images using a Visual Analogue Scale. The limit of statistical significance was P<0.05. Generalized estimating equation (GEE) models were conducted to assess the predictors of variations …

INTRODUCTION: The periodontal morphotype is a leading feature to be born in mind during surgical, implant, prosthetic, restorative as well as orthodontic treatment. A fragile morphotype will rapidly trigger severe and worrying clinical repercussions for the patient.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to minimize the risks involved, sound knowledge of the different morphotypes and of the techniques for clinically evaluating them is a major requirement. These factors need to be regularly reassessed since morphotypes can vary throughout the course of treatment.
RESULTS: Detecting and controlling m

Orthodontists often have trouble treating patients who have temporomandibular joint disorders because occlusion changes depend on the position of unstable condyles. This characteristic means the patients do not have definite criteria with which to make an accurate orthodontic diagnosis, so clinicians are unable to establish a reliable treatment plan. This article reports on the treatment of a patient with skeletal Class II relationship and condylar resorption. A stabilization splint was used before any active orthodontic tooth movement to stabilize her condylar position. Although the patient e…

It is believed that the limits of orthodontic tooth movement are defined by strict physiologic and anatomic boundaries of periodontal tissue. Excessive tooth movement may result in alveolar bone dehiscence and/or fenestration, or root resorption. Andrews' six elements of orofacial harmony theory may serve as an efficient tool to guide orthodontists to decide proper torque of all tooth, so as to keep the roots from insulting cortical bone. It is worth noting that when palatal expansion is executed, the proper torque control of posterior segments is of importance and, when incisor retraction is …

The relationship between cranial base flexion and facial prognathism has been of interest to orthodontists, orthognathic maxillofacial surgeons, and plastic surgeons. This study aimed to identify the cranial base flexion of adults with anteroposterior skeletal disharmony. Because the sample was representing a mixed racial population, the authors performed an investigation to confirm an association with other researches performed in different parts of the world. The results revealed an increase in the cranial base flexion in cases diagnosed as class II skeletal pattern and reduction in the grou…

Impaction of the lower second molar is not a common problem, but it is very challenging for both orthodontist and oral surgeon. Treatment options depend on the degree of tooth inclination, the position of the third molars, and the desired type of movement, which may be surgical and/or orthodontic in nature. A good treatment alternative is surgical uncovering with orthodontically-assisted eruption. A case of successful uprighting using a 0.017 x 0.025-inch titanium molybdenum alloy (TMA) tip-back cantilever is presented. Different aspects of uprighting impacted second molars are discussed in li

Gingival enlargement is a condition that commonly develops during orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic appliances are irritation and retention plaque factors holding up oral hygiene and control of gingival inflammation. Two cases of gingival hypertrophy in young Senegalese females undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances are described and treated by gingivectomy. This surgical procedure have led to morphological conditions of gingiva allowing better plaque control and the orthodontic treatment going on. Periodical controls in child and adolescent are required for healthy periodonti

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a recognized clinical disorder in which periods of cessation of breathing occur in the presence of inspiratory effort. Because this may have serious cardio-vascular and pulmonary consequences, diagnosis, and adequate treatment are important. Apart from its medical repercussions, OSA adversely affects the quality of life of both the sufferer and his family. This paper aims to give an overview of the complaint, defining and describing the disorder, reporting its signs and symptoms, and discussing its diagnosis and treatment. Particular attention will be given to

Study models are frequently used in orthodontics and are a key part of both initial assessment and treatment planning. They are an important part of comprehensive orthodontic records; furthermore, study models are an essential diagnostic aid that can be studied in detail without the patient being present. We present a case of a 14-year-old boy with an abnormal palatal swelling detected by his specialist orthodontist after review of study models taken at the initial appointment. At the assessment alone, the significance of the abnormality was not recognised and without the help of study models,

The management of impacted teeth can be complex, time-consuming and expensive for the patient and healthcare system. These cases often require referral to a different specialty which increases the overall treatment time and number of appointments. This article introduces a simple, efficient technique using a cylindrical punch biopsy instrument to expose superficial, buccally impacted upper permanent canines and incisor teeth in carefully selected cases. This patient- and operator-friendly technique avoids the need for a referral to a different specialty, gives the orthodontist autonomy of the

INTRODUCTION: Dental intrusion has long been considered one of the most difficult movements to induce in orthodontics. Using conventional mechanics, the main difficulty lies in the need to ensure anchorage control, which is highly complicated to achieve, so as to avoid parasitic movements. In this framework, mini-screws have proven to offer a very effective means of anchorage, allowing greater control over intrusion of the anterior and posterior teeth and a simpler biomechanical movement opening up new therapeutic perspectives for the orthodontist.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to desc

INTRODUCTION: Facing a patient with a morphological or numerical disorder of the lateral upper incisors (mainly pegged or missing incisor), the orthodontist has to choose between two treatment options : either spatial planning for a prosthetic restoration, or space closure with substitution of the lateral incisors by canines; the choice depends on the clinical context we are faced with. Each treatment option has its advantages and disadvantages and it is hard to tip the balance in one direction or another.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: This article illustrates the rationale for therapeutic management

A 26-year-old woman was referred to a periodontal surgical practice for concerns related to gingival recession. After several consultations among the orthodontist, periodontist, and cosmetic/restorative dentist, she decided to have surgically facilitated orthodontic therapy as part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary treatment planning process to correct her constricted maxillary arch form, augment thin dentoalveolar facial bone, simultaneously with gaining root coverage as well as improving attached gingiva width and mucogingival thickness. As a consequence of changing the arch form, an imp

Tessier cleft types 3 and 4 are both rare craniofacial anomalies. Here we present the first case of a girl born with a combined anomaly of Tessier clefts 3 and 4 with severe bilateral cleft lip, a displaced premaxilla, and three-dimensional underdevelopment of the hard and soft tissues of the maxilla and zygoma. This type of rare facial cleft poses a major operative challenge. Over a period of years, presurgical alveolar molding with an active appliance was followed by seven operations. A satisfactory esthetic outcome was obtained. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment with a plastic surge

Despite the different orthodontic treatment options for patients with Class II subdivision malocclusions, the involvement of the skeletal structures is significant. It is desirable to combine orthodontic and surgical treatment to achieve a stable and better esthetic result, as illustrated in this case report. The occlusal plane was canted to the right as a part of the patient's facial asymmetry. Consequently, a 3-mm differential impaction of the maxilla on the left side allowed occlusal plane leveling. Mandibular rotation with advancement on the right side corrected the right Class II malocclu

Orthodontic-surgical treatment of dentofacial anomalies involves a multidisciplinary approach that demands to be finely coordinated in order to get a good result. Historically, orthognathic surgery stemmed from the close collaboration between the orthodontist and the maxillo-facial surgeon; however thanks to the collaboration of many other specialists along the diagnostic and therapeutic process, orthognathic surgery nowadays reached an unprecedented level of quality, reliability, and safety. We discuss herein the role of the various specialists that may be involved in the treatment of a patie

An infraerupted tooth is a tooth that has failed to erupt to be in line with adjacent teeth in the vertical plane of occlusion. The general dentist may be faced with this predicament which requires careful attention and thoughtful consideration in terms of long-term patient goals. It is important to diagnose infraerupted teeth and treat them in a timely fashion to help prevent unwelcome sequelae. Important interdisciplinary communication is vital between the dentist and the orthodontist to ensure that precious space and time are not lost. Here we present a review article of complications and c

Ectopic eruption and impaction of canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem. The incidence of impaction ranges between 1% and 3%. The cause of canine impaction can be the result of localized factor(s) or can be a polygenic multifactorial inheritance and associated with other dental anomalies. There are a number of possible sequelae to canine impactions, ranging from loss of space in the arch to resorption of the roots of the neighboring teeth. Although the management of the ectopically erupting teeth necessitates the combined expertise of a number of clinicians, the orthodontist sho
