Regarding the bad results of the orthopaedic treatment of subcondylar dislocated mandibular fractures, the authors present a comparative study of two series of twelve patients: one (group "A") with orthopaedic treatment; the other one (group "B") with surgical treatment by "up and down" pinning via a temporal approach. PURPOSE: To compare 2 methods of fusion in the treatment of lumbar spondylolisthesis: posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) and intertransverse fusion (ITF).
METHODS: 20 patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis were randomly allocated to one of 2 groups: decompression, posterior instrumentation, and PLIF (n=10) or decompression, posterior instrumentation, and ITF (n=10). OBJECTIVE: To develop a mouse model of bone resorption to quantitatively evaluate wear-debris induced osteolysis.
METHODS: Air pouches were established on the back of BALB/c mice, followed by the surgical introduction of a section of femur or calvaria from a syngeneic mouse donor. One group of bone-implanted pouches was stimulated with ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) debris, and the remaining bone-implanted pouches received saline alone as controls. The tissues were harvested at 2, 7, and 14 days after bone implantation for molecular and histological analyses.

The present research is based on the most frequent traumas and fractures in the middle zone of the face (second and third type by Rene le Fort) and the proceeded from them complications for a period of four years in the clinic of Neurosurgery in NIUMN "Pirogov". From the 280 patients that were studied the complications were observed in 54 of them. We worked up the received results statistically and presented them in drawing.

Burns of the neck are a problem. Grafted anterior necks can result in disfiguring hypertrophic scar contractures and wrinkling of the graft. Treatment of relapsed or neglected clubfeet between the age of 8-15 years is at present unsatisfactory. Correction by triple arthrodesis with wedge osteotomies is not possible before the end of skeletal maturation. External fixation was used to treat complex femur fractures in 10 children. These injuries were associated with head trauma, cerebral palsy, epidermolysis bullosa, open wounds, and failed casting. A patient with Friedreich's ataxia was anaesthetised on two occasions. The neuromuscular blocking agent was atracurium 0.5 mg/kg on the first occasion and tubocurarine 0.5 mg/kg on the second. There is a high incidence of recurrence after traumatic dislocation of the shoulder. In this study of 417 patients, we found that initial dislocation below the age of 30, dislocation with capsular detachment, dislocation without tuberosity fracture and a short period of fixation after reduction were predisposing factors. We have designed a modified clavicular harness and have used it in the treatment of 41 such high risk patients. We found no recurrences during an observation period of one year.

Thirty-three consecutive patients with complete ruptures of the calcaneal tendon were treated by external fixation. The patients were assessed both objectively and subjectively, and the results classified as excellent, good, fair and poor. In 30 patients the result was excellent or good. There were no infections or re-ruptures. Two patients with fair results had sural nerve injury. The only patient with a poor result had Sudeck's atrophy. It is felt that this operation satisfies the need for a new technique which is simple and combines the advantages of both surgical and non-surgical treatment

A new method of dorsal arthrodesis in patients with atlanto-axial instability of different etiology is described. In three patients solid laminar osteosynthesis C1/C2 was achieved by insertion of an autogenous cortico-cancellous bone graft into the interlaminar space and by a bilateral application of the lately developed metal clamp. The technical principles of the clamp guarantee a permanent pressure on the graft and a solid initial stability in the segment.
