Incidence of Heterotopic Ossification Without Additional Long-Term NSAID Prophylaxis After Periacetabular Osteotomy and Concomitant Hip Arthroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is an established treatment for hip dysplasia and has been increasingly combined with concomitant hip arthroscopy to address additional intra-articular hip pathology. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a complication of arthroscopic and open hip procedures. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have become an established form of HO prophylaxis, but their use may delay bone healing. PURPOSE: To examine the incidence of HO without NSAID prophylaxis in patients after PAO with concomitant hip arthroscopy and to evaluate the impact of other variable

Histology of neurogenic heterotopic ossification and comparison with its radiological expression in acute spinal cord injured patients.

STUDY DESIGN: Clinical prospective study. OBJECTIVES: To histologically examine puncture biopsies of early neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) in spinal cord injured individuals. SETTING: University of Bochum, Germany. METHODS: After acute spinal trauma, participants underwent a sonographic examination of the hip joints and a routine laboratory examination. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) of the pelvis was performed if there were clinical and laboratory signs of NHO and sonographic evidence of edema and/or calcifications in the tissue around the hip joint.

Metformin inhibits heterotopic ossification of mouse Achilles tendon by inhibiting the Nr4a1/Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway.

Heterotopic ossification is a pathological process characterized by aberrant bone formation in soft tissues, leading to joint pain, stiffness, functional impairment, and poor quality of life. We used a mouse Achilles tendon heterotopic ossification model and in vitro tendon-derived stem cells (TDSCs) assays to identify the molecular mechanism of metformin in prevention of heterotopic ossification. Metformin significantly attenuated heterotopic ossification, reducing ectopic bone volume and osteogenic gene expression. In vitro, metformin inhibited TDSCs osteogenic differentiation in a dose-depe

Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification: A Rare Complication of Guillain-Barré Syndrome Exacerbated by Ankylosing Spondylitis and HLA-B27.

We report an exceptional case of neurogenic heterotopic ossification (NHO) developing in a 28-year-old female with pre-existing human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) positive ankylosing spondylitis (AS), following a severe course of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). Seven days postpartum, she developed acute GBS requiring three months of intensive care, intubation, mechanical ventilation, and plasmapheresis, leading to flaccid tetraplegia and prolonged immobilization. Four months post-GBS onset, she presented with bilateral hip pain and severely restricted range of motion. Radiographs and CT scan

Rare Case of Heterotopic Ossification Impinging on the Quadriceps Mechanism Following Total Knee Replacement: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) of the shoulder complicate approximately 0.7% of primary and 15.4% of revision shoulder arthroplasties. Culture-negative PJIs constitute 5-42% of cases, with fungal and mycobacterial pathogens frequently implicated, often following broad-spectrum antibiotics administration prior to tissue sampling. Mycobacteria are isolated in 43% of culture-negative PJIs and associated with advanced age, chronic steroid therapy, immunosuppression, and retroviral infections. Improved diagnostic techniques have increased the isolation and reporting of non-tub

Roles of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 in Heterotopic Ossification Induced by Achilles Tenotomy in Thermal Injured Mice.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the process by which ectopic bone forms at an extraskeletal site. Inflammatory conditions induce plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1), an inhibitor of fibrinolysis, which regulates osteogenesis. In the present study, we investigated the roles of PAI-1 in the pathophysiology of HO induced by trauma/burn treatment using PAI-1-deficient mice. PAI-1 deficiency significantly promoted HO and increased the number of alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-positive cells in Achilles tendons after trauma/burn treatment. The mRNA levels of inflammation markers were elevated in A

Endogenous hydrogen sulfide accelerated trauma-induced heterotopic ossification through the Ca2+/ERK pathway-enhanced aberrant osteogenic activity.

Unveiling of the mechanism involved in the occurrence and development of trauma-induced heterotopic ossification (tHO) is highly demanding due to current ineffective clinical treatment for it. Previous studies proposed that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was vital for fate determination of stem cells, suggesting a potential role in the regulation of tHO development. In the current study, We found that expression of metabolic enzyme within sulfur conversion pathway was enhanced after tendon injury, leading to H2S accumulation within the tHO region. Increased production of endogenous H2S was shown to pr

Complete elbow ankylosis secondary to heterotopic ossification: operative management leads to fair to excellent long-term outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification in the elbow, often caused by trauma or neurogenic factors, can lead to limited range of motion and physical impairment, while severe cases may result in debilitating loss of function. Complete bony ankylosis of the elbow, though rare, presents challenges in treatment due to complex anatomy and high recurrence rates, with limited literature on management and outcomes. This study retrospectively investigates cases of elbow ankylosis secondary to heterotopic ossification, assessing long-term functional outcomes following operative intervention and standardize

Extensive Heterotopic Ossification in a Large Incisional Ventral Hernia After a Burn Injury Requiring Transversus Abdominis Release.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is an atypical complication of burn injuries presenting in 0.2-4% of cases. Usually, HO develops surrounding long bones or joints after orthopedic procedures or trauma. However, on extremely rare occasions, HO can develop from other bones such as the xiphoid. The purpose of this case report is to describe a case of an open retromuscular abdominal wall reconstruction with bilateral transversus abdominis release (TAR) in a patient with extensive abdominal heterotopic ossification following a midline laparotomy in the setting of a large burn injury. The patient was a

Radiation Therapy for Benign Disease: Arteriovenous Malformations, Desmoid Tumor, Dupuytren Contracture, Graves Ophthalmopathy, Gynecomastia, Heterotopic Ossification, Histiocytosis.

Although the use of ionizing radiation in malignant conditions has been well established, its application in benign conditions has not been fully accepted and has been inadequately recognized by health care providers outside of radiation therapy. Most frequently, radiation therapy in these benign conditions is used along with other treatment modalities, such as surgery, in instances where the condition causes significant disability or could even lead to death. Radiation therapy can be helpful for inflammatory/proliferative disorders. This article discusses the current use of radiation therapy

Heterotopic ossification in orbital roof, frontal sinus, and ethmoidal cells leading to hypoglobus and upward-gaze deficit.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) of facial sinuses is very rare. In this article, we present an extensive HO case covering the right frontal sinus, superior ethmoidal cells, and upper orbital rim and roof. This mass was leading to a hypoglobus and upward-gaze deficit due to mass effect. With an upper eyelid incision, mass over the upper orbital rim and roof was excised by an osteotome. Histopathologic examination was compatible with HO. On the postoperative 18-month follow-up, hypoglobus and upward-gaze deficit have significantly regressed. There were no relapses or enlargement over the operative

Heterotopic ossification of small saphenous vein and panniculitis ossificans of chronic venous insufficiency presenting with livedo racemosa.

OBJECTIVES: Livedo racemosa is a reticulate eruption that presents with branched and partially blanchable incomplete rings. Livedo racemosa is distinct from livedo reticularis, a similar condition that presents with a diffuse and symmetrical blanchable eruption. In contrast to livedo reticularis which may be physiological, livedo racemosa is always associated with an underlying pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first report of panniculitis ossificans and heterotopic ossification of small saphenous vein (SSV) presenting with livedo racemosa. METHODS: We present a 70-year-old male referr

Surgical Treatment of Heterotopic Ossification of the Bilateral Shoulder and Elbow Joints Caused by Burn Injury: A Case Report.

CASE: A 27-year-old man sustained chemical burns affecting 54% of his body caused by steam and acetic acid at a dyeing factory. He developed restricted bilateral elbow and shoulder motion because of heterotopic ossification (HO) beginning 3 months after the incident. The skin healed within 1 year, but ankylosis developed because of progressing ossification. We performed HO surgical excision in 4 stages. Two years after the final surgery, the function of both upper extremities had recovered. CONCLUSION: For HO caused by severe burns, improvement in upper extremity function can be achieved even
