[Halogen-induced panniculitis caused by potassium bromide].

Necrotizing panniculitis due to potassium-bromide is a drug induced allergic reaction following stimulation of lymphocytes as demonstrated for the first time by a lymphocyte transformation test (LTT). We named the disease "halogen panniculitis" because of similar generally known reactions to iodides and describe the typical symptoms in three own cases. Bromoderma tuberosum tends to be a similar kind of allergy. For the first time pancreatitis to potassium bromide in men has been observed, which has already been described in epileptic dogs treated with potassium bromide.

Cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis evolving into total lipodystrophy.

A 15-year-old boy had persistent fever with severe neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, coagulation disorder, and marked elevation of lactate dehydrogenase values. A diagnosis of cytophagic histiocytic panniculitis was made after repeated skin biopsies. Three years after onset, he gradually lost 20 kg in body weight, and both skin and bone marrow specimens revealed degenerative changes of fatty tissue without any inflammatory cells. These findings suggest that total lipodystrophy syndrome results from the inflammatory destructive process of adipose tissue. To our knowledge, our report is the first t…

Eosinophilic panniculitis associated with chronic recurrent parotitis.

A 37-year-old woman presented with recurrent erythema nodosum-like lesions on her arms and legs that were preceded by chronic recurrent parotitis. Microscopic examination revealed a mixed lobular and septal panniculitis with many eosinophils and multiple eosinophilic flame figures similar to those seen in Wells' syndrome. The dermis was not involved. The classification, differential diagnosis, and possible pathomechanisms of eosinophilic panniculitis are discussed.

Alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency associated with panniculitis.

Alpha 1-Antitrypsin is the principal serum protease inhibitor. In addition to the well-recognized association with early-onset emphysema and cirrhosis, alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency may be associated with panniculitis. In this article we describe three patients in whom the recognition of certain clinical and histologic features of panniculitis eventually led to the diagnosis of alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiency. Two of our patients were young adults and one was a child. All three had draining, panniculitis, or cellulitis-like lesions at sites of prior trauma. The histopathologic findings were ch…

Measles virus panniculitis subsequent to vaccine administration.

A severe illness developed gradually in a healthy boy following administration of live measles vaccine at age 14 years. Killed measles vaccine had been given at age 2. Panniculitis began near the site of live vaccine injection, extended contiguously to involve the entire upper arm, and then began to appear in distant subcutaneous sites. He was febrile, leukopenic, anemic, and lost weight rapidly. Evidence of a cause-and-effect relationship between the lesions and the measles vaccine included biopsy findings of particles closely resembling measles nucleocapsids and complete virions by electron …

Localized lipoatrophy (atrophic connective tissue disease panniculitis).

Four patients with localized lipoatrophy were observed. All were female, and three were children. Lymphocytic panniculitis was observed in early biopsy specimens of all four cases, with focal histiocytic granulomas in one case. Later biopsy specimens in three patients showed that the inflammation was transient. These pathologic findings and reports of lipodystrophies associated with nephritis, hypocomplementemia, and other inflammatory or immunologic disorders offer an opportunity for histologic and immunologic study of such patients. Localized lipoatrophy may represent the end stage of pannic…
