[Benign tumors of the nasal cavity, new classification and review of the literature. Report of 54 cases].

Benign tumors of the nasal cavity is an uncommon disease and very diverse about histological variety. Theses tumors are seen at any age without specificity in semiological aspect. The diagnostic approach is based on nasal endoscopy, imaging (CT-MRI) and biopsy. In some anatomo clinical varieties the result of biopsy is so difficult and we must analyze all the tumor specimen after surgery with modern biological procedure (immunohistochemistry, molecular biology). The treatment is surgery especially with endonasal endoscopic procedure. Our series included 54 benign endonasal tumors between Janua

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma: case report and literature review.

We report a case of a 29-year-old male patient with a respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) of the nasal cavity. REAH is a polypoid proliferation of glandular spaces lined by ciliated epithelium and goblet cells in the upper aerodigestive tract. Although REAHs are benign lesions, they may be confused with a variety of other pathologies such as inflammatory polyps, inverted Schneiderian papillomas and low-grade sinonasal adenocarcinomas. The recognition of this entity is important as complete excision is curative.

Giant Squamous Cell Papilloma of the Eyelid-Diagnostic and Therapeutic Challenges.

Squamous cell papilloma (SCP) is generally a human papillomavirus (HPV) induced exophytic or endophytic proliferation on the surface of the skin, oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, cervix, vagina, and anal canal. The endophytic type SCP can cause differential diagnostic difficulties with keratoacanthoma, inverted follicular keratosis, and squamous cell carcinoma; however, these lesions are not associated with HPV infection. The authors present a female patient who noticed an extremely rapidly growing tumor destructing the left lower eyelid. The histological analysis of the biopsy sample revealed

[Papilloma inversum of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Clinical aspects and histology of 22 personal cases].

Report on 22 cases of inverted papilloma. The common site of origin of the tumours is the lateral nasal wall and with a few exceptions they are benign. They become dangerous if they invade the bony structures of the face skeleton, especially the hard palate and the orbit. The therapy of choice is lateral rhinotomy with an "en bloc" resection of the lateral wall of the nose and the ethmoid of the invaded side. In that case the prognosis is good. The classifications by Schneider and Skolnik only define the size of the tumour but do not give an indication of prognosis; they are, therefore, unnece

[Modern endosurgical technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of maxillary inflammations and tumors (part 2)].

A total of 102 patients with inflammatory diseases and tumors of the maxillary sinuses were examined and treated using endosurgical technologies. X-Ray computer-aided tomography and magnetic imaging helped determine the access to the maxillary sinus, and the endosurgical instrument was inserted through the anterior wall of the sinus, medial wall, and maxillary tuberosity. Endosurgery was the most effective in polypous sinusitis, mucocele, inverted papilloma, and for biopsy. Endosurgical technologies allow a full-scale surgical intervention with the least invasion.

Osseous metaplasia in a nasal polyp: report of a rare case and review of the literature.

Metaplasia is the conversion of one adult tissue or cell type into another tissue or cell type. Although osseous metaplasia has been described in many parts of the body, it is rarely encountered in the head and neck region, especially in nasal polyps. This article reports a case of unilateral sinonasal polyp containing areas of osseous metaplasia in a 44-year-old woman presenting with nasal obstruction. Also included are a brief discussion of osseous metaplasia in the head and neck region and a literature review.

Osteitis in Diseases With Unilateral Opacification of Paranasal Sinuses.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common disease with mucosal inflammation, and may sometimes be accompanied by bone thickening. The disease is usually bilateral; when it is unilateral, there may be a specific disease. This study aimed to investigate the association between unilateral sinus opacification and osteitis. METHODS: In total, 104 patients with computed tomography revealing unilateral sinus opacification were included in this study. Patients were retrospectively evaluated using the Global Osteitis Scoring Scale (GOSS) score, Lund-Mackey (LM) score, polyp score, and blood

Benign Tumors of the Anterior Cranial Base.

Benign tumors of the anterior cranial base may originate from intracranial, cranial, or extracranial sites. Intracranial tumors such as meningiomas may secondarily involve the cranial base and extend into the sinuses or nasal cavity. Bony tumors arising from the cranium include benign fibro-osseous lesions such as osteoma, fibrous dysplasia, and ossifying fibroma. The most common extracranial tumors that may extend to the skull base include angiofibroma and inverted papilloma. Symptoms are nonspecific and diagnosis is often delayed. In most cases, a diagnosis can be established based on the cl

Detection of human papillomavirus DNA in benign and malignant sinonasal neoplasms.

Infections with human papillomaviruses are divided basically into three different infection types: those producing specific clinically visible lesions, those remaining subclinical, and those being latent. The assumed infection type thought to be present in tissue specimens has influence on the conclusions that can be made from an analysis, i.e. whether or not the HPV infection has a causal relationship with other epidemiological or molecular investigation observations. To determine whether HPV DNA detection in different entities of the upper aerodigestive tract represents a coincidental, persi

Recurrent transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder: A mixed nested variant case report and literature review.

Nested variant of urothelial cell carcinoma (NVUC) is a rare histological entity, with about 80 reported cases. It has a deceptively benign appearance with an aspect characterized by confluent small nest or urothelial's cell tubules. This tumour often resembles inverted papilloma, von Brunn's nests (VBNs), cystitis cystica, nephrogenic metaplasia and sometimes usual transitional cell cancer. It is very important to be able to distinguish between benign lesions and nested variant bladder cancer because, in spite of its bland morphology, there is evidence that it behaves aggressively.

Bilateral nasal squamous carcinoma arising in papillomatosis: report of a case developing after chemotherapy for leukemia.

A patient with a 25-year history of recurrent left nasal polyps is described. Recurrent papillomatosis (schneiderian or inverted papilloma) involving the left nasal cavity had been histologically documented for five years. Following the onset of and chemotherapy for acute myelomonocytic leukemia, the patient developed papillomatosis in the right nasal cavity and invasive squamous cell carcinomas in both nasal cavities. The case may represent the first reported example of apparently separate invasive carcinomas arising in nasal papillomatosis and developing in both the left and right nasal cavi

[Fibroglandular hamartoma of the nasal cavity: case description and review].

A fibroglandular hamartoma of the nasal cavity was found in a patient with nasal polyposis. The only symptom had been bilateral nasal obstruction for years. The tumor was removed by lateral rhinotomy. Our initial differential diagnosis included nasal glioma and inverted papilloma, but this rare tumor was not suspected. Four years after surgery, the patient is well and the risk of recurrence is deemed to be very low. Surgeons and pathologists must be aware of these and other uncommon tumors of the nose because some may require special diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Nasolacrimal duct tumours in the era of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy: literature review.

BACKGROUND: Nasolacrimal duct tumours are rare and are often found inadvertently during dacryocystorhinostomy. Anecdotal case reports have been published, mostly in ophthalmology journals. Since the era of endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, such cases are more frequently encountered by ENT surgeons. METHOD: This paper reports a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy over the last 10 years in our dedicated epiphora clinic. It also provides a systematic literature review of nasolacrimal duct tumour cases published in English over the last 16 years.

Low-Grade Papillary Schneiderian Carcinoma: A Case Report.

The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses are covered with ciliated respiratory mucosa of ectodermal origin, known as Schneiderian epithelium, which can give rise to different types of sinonasal carcinomas. A 42-year-old woman with a history of nasal polypectomy 3 years previously presented with nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea. She was found to have a papillary mass involving the left nasal cavity, and the left maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses by radiologic examination. She underwent endonasal resection under the diagnosis of oncocytic papilloma. The resected specimen showed exuberant invasive gr

Update From the 4th Edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumours: Tumours of the Ear.

The 2017 fourth edition of the World Health Organization Classification of Tumours, specifically as it relates to the ear (Chap. 9), has several changes. Importantly, the number of entities has been significantly reduced by omitting tumors or lesions if they do not occur exclusively or predominantly at this site or if they are discussed in detail elsewhere in the book. These entities include: embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, osteoma, exostosis, angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia, Schneiderian papilloma, inverted papilloma, lipoma of the internal auditory canal, hemangioma, hematolymphoid t…

Endoscopic management of sinonasal malignancy.

The advent of rigid telescopes has revolutionized the management of rhinologic disease. These instruments have been used as a diagnostic and therapeutic tool for paranasal sinus inflammatory diseases since the 1970s. Endoscopic techniques have been used for treating increasingly complex intranasal pathology, including nasolacrimal duct obstruction, cerebrospinal fluid leaks/encephaloceles, dysthyroid orbitopathy, and optic neuropathy. Recently, endoscopic techniques have also been used successfully to manage selected tumors, including inverted papilloma, angiofibromas, and hypophyseal tumors.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma In Situ Originating From Nasal Polyps With Human Papillomavirus 51 Infection: A Case Report.

Malignant transformation of nasal polyps is extremely rare in cases without background inverted papilloma. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection believed to be associated with oropharyngeal carcinoma via oro-genital sexual contact. We present a case of focal squamous cell carcinoma in situ that occurred on the surface of nasal polyps and was associated with HPV 51. The patient was successfully treated with endoscopic sinus surgery. Clinicians should be aware of the potential for hidden malignancies, and pathologic assessment of tissue specimens must be performed even i
