To determine the degree of intraspecimen fecal egg count variation in Schistosoma mansoni infection and its impact on commonly used parasitologic parameters obtained by single egg counts, 10 25-mg Kato-Katz slides were prepared from each of three stool specimens collected on different days in a study group of 20 infected people. Data about human Cryptosporidium parvum infection have originated from travelers, community and day care center outbreaks, and persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. The growth rate of unilocular hydatid cysts over a two-year period was studied in Libyan sheep dosed orally with gravid segments of Echinococcus granulosus taken from stray town dogs. Seven of the eight sheep dosed with 20-100 gravid segments (say 4000-20,000 eggs) had developed only infertile hydatid cysts after 107-611 days. Sheep dosed with 1000 gravid segments (say 200,000 eggs) had developed only sterile cysts when examined 358 days after dosing. Susceptibility of Chinese hamster (Cricetulus griseus) of Asahikawa Colony (CHA) to Hymenolepis nana or Trichuris muris infection was compared in the feces-egg examination with that of mice as the control animals. Though CHA were resistant to the infection of H. nana, they were found to become susceptible to H. nana by the treatment with cortisone. In a series of control study on human clonorchiasis, surveys had been carried out for four years. During the fourth year of study, immunodiagnosis was also tried. Skin test and stool examination were performed as a routine epidemiological survey in this study. Variation in daily egg counts, and in counts for samples of the same stool, was investigated in children with Schistosoma mansoni and Ascaris lumbricoides infections, using a thin smear technique. In the desert city of Beersheba, Israel, a survey was made of the infection rate of Toxocara canis in dogs. 3.0% of dogs destroyed at the municipal dog pound had intestinal T. canis. 7% of faecal samples gathered from day care centres throughout the city were shown to contain T. canis eggs. This low rate of infection could possibly be explained by the hot, arid climatic conditions which may render eggs non-infective or by the sandy soil in the area that may cover faeces containing T. canis ova and make the eggs unavailable to other dogs.
