Bilateral multiple sialolithiasis of the parotid gland in a patient with Sjögren's syndrome.

The presence of multiple calculi in the major salivary glands is an uncommon finding. Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by lymphocyte-mediated destruction of the exocrine glands. The case is presented of a 49-year-old female with Sjogren's syndrome found to have bilateral multiple sialolithiasis in the parenchyma of the parotid glands. The patient presented with a right sided painful inflamed swelling of the parotid region. Even though she had been diagnosed with primary Sjögren's syndrome 3 years prior to admission, she did not report any previous episode of sia…

Automated segmentation and deep learning classification of ductopenic parotid salivary glands in sialo cone-beam CT images.

PURPOSE: This study addressed the challenge of detecting and classifying the severity of ductopenia in parotid glands, a structural abnormality characterized by a reduced number of salivary ducts, previously shown to be associated with salivary gland impairment. The aim of the study was to develop an automatic algorithm designed to improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency in analyzing ductopenic parotid glands using sialo cone-beam CT (sialo-CBCT) images. METHODS: We developed an end-to-end automatic pipeline consisting of three main steps: (1) region of interest (ROI) computation, (2) paro

[A fast adaptive active contour model based on local gray difference for parotid duct].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a fast adaptive active contour model based on local gray difference for parotid duct image segmentation. METHODS: On the basis of the LBF model, we added the mean difference of the local gray scale inside and outside the contour as the energy term of the driving evolution curve, and the local gray-scale variance difference was used to replaceλ1 and λ2 as the control term of the energy parameter value. Two local similarity factors of different neighborhood sizes were introduced to correct the effects of image gray unevenness and boundary blur to improve the segmentation

[Reconstruction with supraclavicular island flaps : An option in oncological treatment of head and neck carcinomas].

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of defects after extirpation of head and neck cancer is a highly challenging and complex surgical undertaking. Commonly used techniques, e.g., the radial forearm flap, the anterior lateral thigh flap, or flaps harvested from the chest-deltopectoral or pectoralis major-share numerous disadvantages, such as donor-site morbidity, poor color matching for cutaneous reconstruction, and excessive tissue bulk. The use of a supraclavicular artery island flap is a long-forgotten but increasingly popular option for reconstruction in the head and neck area. MATERIALS AND METHOD

Systematic Review of Parotid Gland Sarcomas: Multi-Variate Analysis of Clinicopathologic Findings, Therapeutic Approaches and Oncological Outcomes That Affect Survival Rate.

The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature of sarcoma of the parotid gland in order to analyze the main factors affecting survival rate. A systematic literature review was performed between January 1990 to November 2021, and 88 patients affected by parotid gland sarcomas were included. The most common histological types were Rhabdomyosarcoma and Synovial Sarcoma. From our review, it emerges that primary sarcomas of the parotid glands are locally aggressive but show low tendency to metastasize to the lymph nodes of the neck and that surgery (i.e., total or radical parotid

Anatomical Mapping of the Masseter for Safe Botulinum Toxin Injection: A Cadaveric Study.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin (BTX) is commonly used in masseter injections to enhance facial contour. However, the injection may harm the surrounding structure due to insufficient research on the anatomical structure of the masseter region. OBJECTIVES: This study is aimed at providing anatomical evidence for facial injections in clinical practice by dissecting the superficial masseter structure and analyzing it by classifying the masseteric nerve and structure. METHODS: Select 24 adult gross specimens with intact facial characteristics and dissect the masseter regions to expose the surface st

Dermoid Cyst of the Parotid Gland: Case Report of a Rare Entity and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND A dermoid cyst is a benign, epithelial-lined cavitary lesion composed of ectoderm and mesoderm that can arise anywhere in the body, with a tendency to develop in midline structures such as the coccyx and ovary. It is a rare entity in the head and neck region, where the incidence is 7% of all body dermoid cysts. Of these 7% (dermoid cysts found within the head and neck area), 80% are found localized to areas around the orbit, oral region, and nasal region. Within the parotid gland, they are extremely rare, with less than 25 cases reported in the existing literature. CASE REPORT We re

Acquisition of N-Glycosylation Sites in Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain Genes During Local Expansion in Parotid Salivary Glands of Primary Sjögren Patients.

Previous studies revealed high incidence of acquired N-glycosylation sites acquired N-glycosylation sites in RNA transcripts encoding immunoglobulin heavy variable region (IGHV) 3 genes from parotid glands of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) patients. In this study, next generation sequencing was used to study the extent of ac-Nglycs among clonally expanded cells from all IGVH families in the salivary glands of pSS patients. RNA was isolated from parotid gland biopsies of five pSS patients and five non-pSS sicca controls. IGHV sequences covering all functional IGHV genes were amplified, sequen

Management of first branchial cleft anomalies: report of two cases.

Embryological anomalies of the first branchial apparatus result in rare forms of developmental abnormality of the head and neck. Their presentation may be similar to other conditions and they may easily be overlooked by the unwary when considering the differential diagnosis of a parotid swelling or a neck sinus. Consequently, they may be mismanaged on one or more occasions. We encountered two patients in whom such problems arose and conclude that appropriate investigation and management by a team skill ed in surgery of this region is necessary if a satisfactory outcome is to be achieved.

Hemangiopericytoma of the parotid gland: CT and MR features.

Hemangiopericytomas are uncommon vascular neoplasms with rare occurrence in the head and neck region. They originate from the pericytes, which are small, oval cells encircling capillaries. Hemangiopericytomas traditionally appear in the retroperitoneum and in the capillaries of the extremities. A case of hemangiopericytoma of the parotid gland is presented. The clinical, surgical, histologic, and radiologic features are described and discussed.
