Source-related components of fine particulate matter and risk of adverse birth outcomes in Northern Italy.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of the present study was to assess the association between PM2.5, its sources, and preterm birth (PTB), low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA) in a large open residential cohort (Supersito Project in the Emilia-Romagna Region - Northern Italy). METHODS: We collected 2012-2014 pregnancy and childbirth data from Birth Assistance Certificates and selected the pregnancies of interest. PTBs (gestational age < 37 weeks), LBW (weight < 2500 g), and SGA (newborns weighing ≤ 10th age and pregnancy week-specific percentile) were considered. Three-year measur

Toxic trace metals in size-segregated fine particulate matter: Mass concentration, respiratory deposition, and risk assessment.

To characterise the mass concentration, size-distribution, and respiratory deposition of selected trace metals (Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ba, and Pb) in size-segregated PM2.5, a long-term monitoring campaign was undertaken at an urban background site in Como (Northern Italy). 96-h aerosol samples were collected weekly, from May 2015 to March 2016, using a 13-stage low pressure impactor and analysed via laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Significantly higher levels of trace metals were generally found during the heating season (two to more than four times) compared to th

Study on the Mechanism of Curcumin Regulating Lung Injury Induced by Outdoor Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5).

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to PM induces oxidative stress, leading to a variety of health problems. In particular, PM2.5 contains a lot of substances harmful to the human body and penetrates into the lungs to induce lung injury. At the same time, there is increasing evidence that oxidative stress also affects the severity of lung injury. However, there is still no good way to reduce or eliminate these hazards. In the future, more experimental research is needed to further confirm the mechanisms of these hazards and formulate effective preventive measures and t

The Inhibition of Caspase-1- Does Not Revert Particulate Matter (PM)-Induced Lung Immunesuppression in Mice.

Background: Air pollution is becoming a threatening issue for human health. Many epidemiological studies relate air pollution index to adverse effects in terms of disease incidence and/or disease exacerbation. In our previous studies, we found air pollutants can induce the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines from human peripheral blood cells. To better understand, the effects of air pollution in the lung, we took advantage of an animal model. Experimental Approach: Mice were intratracheally and daily exposed to urban collected particulate matter (PM, PM10, and PM1) and to the sub-micrometric…

Relationships between Particulate Matter, Ozone, and Nitrogen Oxides during Urban Smoke Events in the Western US.

Urban ozone (O3) pollution is influenced by the transport of wildfire smoke but observed impacts are highly variable. We investigate O3 impacts from smoke in 18 western US cities during July-September, 2013-2017, with ground-based monitoring data from air quality system sites, using satellite-based hazard mapping system (HMS) fire and smoke product to identify overhead smoke. We present four key findings. First, O3 and PM2.5 (particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter) are elevated at nearly all sites on days influenced by smoke, with the greatest mean enhancement occurring during multiday smoke e…

Ecotoxicity assessment of particulate matter emitted from heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles: influence of leaching conditions.

Concerns regarding the environmental impact of diesel exhaust particulate matter (DPM) have increased in recent years. Following emission to the atmosphere, these fine materials can sorb many contaminants at their surface, which can subsequently be released, for instance, due to physicochemical environmental changes. The desorption of contaminants from particulate matter will increase the environmental pollution and can promote ecotoxicological effects. In this context, the objective of this study was to assess the aquatic ecotoxicity profile of extracts of DPM obtained at two different pH val…

Commuter exposure to particulate matter and particle-bound PAHs in three transportation modes in Beijing, China.

Exposure to fine and ultrafine particles as well as particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by commuters in three transportation modes (walking, subway and bus) were examined in December 2011 in Beijing, China. During the study period, real-time measured median PM2.5 mass concentration (PMC) for walking, riding buses and taking the subway were 26.7, 32.9 and 56.9 μg m(-3), respectively, and particle number concentrations (PNC) were 1.1 × 10(4), 1.0 × 10(4) and 2.2 × 10(4) cm(-3). Commuters were exposed to higher PNC in air-conditioned buses and aboveground-railway, but higher PMC i

Changes in inorganic fine particulate matter sensitivities to precursors due to large-scale US emissions reductions.

We examined the impact of large US emissions changes, similar to those estimated to have occurred between 2005 and 2012 (high and low emissions cases, respectively), on inorganic PM2.5 sensitivities to further NOx, SO2, and NH3 emissions reductions using the chemical transport model GEOS-Chem. Sensitivities to SO2 emissions are larger year-round and across the US in the low emissions case than the high emissions case due to more aqueous-phase SO2 oxidation. Sensitivities to winter NOx emissions are larger in the low emissions case, more than 2× those of the high emissions case in parts of the

Regulation of COX-2 expression and IL-6 release by particulate matter in airway epithelial cells.

Particulate matter (PM) in ambient air is a risk factor for human respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The delivery of PM to airway epithelial cells has been linked to release of proinflammatory cytokines; however, the mechanisms of PM-induced inflammatory responses are not well-characterized. This study demonstrates that PM induces cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression and IL-6 release through both a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent NF-kappaB pathway and an ROS-independent C/EBPbeta pathway in human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEpCs) in culture. Treatment of HBEpCs with Baltimore PM i…

A constant-volume rapid exhaust dilution system for motor vehicle particulate matter number and mass measurements.

An improved version of the constant volume sampling (CVS) methodology that overcomes a number of obstacles that exist with the current CVS d … nally used to connect the tailpipe to the dilution tunnel significantly reduces the hydrocarbon and particulate matter (PM) storage release artifacts that can lead to wildly incorrect particle number counts and to erroneous filter-collected PM mass. It provides accurate representations of particle size distributions for diesel vehicles by avoiding the particle coagu …

Association of protein signature of fine particulate matter with MASLD: the underlying pathways and Mendelian randomization analysis.

INTRODUCTION: MASLD is a common chronic liver disease worldwide; identifying modifiable risk factors is crucial. Although fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been epidemiologically linked to MASLD, its mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To explore the mediating role of protein signature on the association between PM2.5 and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and the underlying biological pathways. METHODS: We included 52,190 participants free of MASLD at baseline of a large cohort. Annual average PM2.5 exposure was estimated by bilinear interpolation, and ti…

Fine particulate matter exposure and Cystic Fibrosis morbidity in the age of CFTR modulators, an observational study.

RATIONALE: Despite CFTR modulators transforming cystic fibrosis (CF) care, patients still show wide variability in pulmonary outcomes. The contribution of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure to this variability in the modulator era is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effects of PM2.5 on pulmonary outcomes in people with CF and to assess whether CFTR modulator use modifies these effects. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort of 5,661 from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Registry, ZIP codes were linked to daily PM2.5. Long-term exposure was defined as the fraction of days ≥ 12 µg/…

Indoor and outdoor fine particulate matter and carbon monoxide concentrations in homes of infants in Nairobi, Kenya.

Early life exposure to air pollution is associated with adverse health outcomes in children however few studies have investigated children's air pollution exposures in urban settings in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We measured fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) in homes of infants in Nairobi, Kenya and conducted exploratory analysis of exposure factors. Questionnaires captured household characteristics and self-reported air pollution exposures. Indoor and outdoor 24-hour (24 h) concentrations were measured inside and 1 m outside the house. PM2.5 was sampled using standard gr…

Influence of Oil and Gas End-Use on Summertime Particulate Matter and Ozone Pollution in the Eastern US.

The influence of oil and gas end-use activities on ambient air quality is complex and understudied, particularly in regions where intensive end-use activities and large biogenic emissions of isoprene coincide. In these regions, vehicular emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx≡NO + NO2) modulate the oxidative fate of isoprene, a biogenic precursor of the harmful air pollutants ozone, formaldehyde, and particulate matter (PM2.5). Here, we investigate the direct and indirect influence of the end-use emissions on ambient air quality. To do so, we use the GEOS-Chem model with focus on the eastern United…

Independent and interactive effects of particulate matter and meteorological factors on hand, foot and mouth disease in Fuyang.

Previous research has demonstrated the influence of environmental factor on the occurrence of infectious diseases. However, there is insufficient and conflicting evidence regarding the association between Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and environmental variables, particularly the interaction of environmental variables. This study aims to investigate the individual and interactive effects of particulate matter (PM) and meteorological factors on HFMD incidence in Fuyang. The generalized additive models were combined with distributed lag non-linear models to assess the individual effects be…

Effectiveness of a Protocol to Reduce Children's Exposure to Particulate Matter and NO2 in Schools during Alert Days.

Reducing children's exposure to air pollutants should be considered a primary goal, especially for the most vulnerable subjects. The goal of this study was to test the effectiveness of applying a protocol in the event of alert days, i.e., days with forecasted PM10 levels above the EU limit value (50 µg/m3). The test was conducted, before the onset of SARS-CoV-2 restrictions, in a classroom of a primary school in Parma (Italy)-a highly polluted area in Northern Italy. The protocol included indications for the frequency of opening windows and doors, as well as the activation of an air purifier.

Assessing Impacts of Additives on Particulate Matter and Volatile Organic Compounds Produced from the Grilling of Meat.

Cooking fumes are an important source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), and carbonyl compounds. The additive is wildly applied in grilling meat for flavor improvement. However, the effects of additives on cooking fumes emissions, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), and carbonyl compounds, in meat grilling have not been studied. The impact of four additives, including white pepper, salt, garlic powder, and compound marinade, on the emission characteristics of cooking fumes from the grilling meat was investigated. The concentrations of…
