Serum complement activity and serum enzymes in rats after a subcutaneous injection of toxin prepared from Pasteurella multocida type D.

Toxin produced by Pasteurella multocida type D was investigated for its effect on serum complement and serum biochemistry in rats. Rats were given a sublethal single subcutaneous injection of D toxin equivalent to 0.2 microgram/kg of body weight. Serum obtained 1, 3, 5 and 7 days post-treatment was tested for complement activity, total bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). Serum complement titers were significantly elevated (P less than 0.05) at all times after injection of toxin compared to rats injected with diluent and te…

Management Strategies for Pasteurella multocida Infections in Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction: Review of the Literature and a Successful Nonsurgical Salvage Case.

Pasteurella multocida is a rare but clinically significant zoonotic pathogen in implant-based breast reconstruction, often related to pet exposure. Although implant infections typically lead to explantation, recent evidence-including our case-suggests that nonsurgical salvage may be possible in selected scenarios under close surveillance. In this report, the authors conducted a narrative review of the literature, identifying 5 previously reported P. multocida breast prosthesis infections and 1 Pasteurella canis case reviewed separately for broader zoonotic context. Among the 5 previously repor…

Evaluation of the Application of PCR and MALDI-TOF MS Methods for the Identification of Pasteurella multocida Strains Isolated from Rabbits in Poland.

Pasteurella multocida is a pathogen of numerous mammal and bird species. Based on capsular antigens, five capsular types of P. multocida (A, B, D, E, and F) are distinguished. The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of multiplex PCR and MALDI-TOF MS for the identification and capsular typing of P. multocida strains isolated from rabbits. A total of 115 field strains previously classified as P. multocida, isolated in Poland between 1999 and 2020, were analysed. Multiplex PCR was applied for simultaneous species identification and determination of capsular types. Most strains belong…

Using genomics to understand inter- and intra- outbreak diversity of Pasteurella multocida isolates associated with fowl cholera in meat chickens.

Fowl cholera, caused by Pasteurella multocida, continues to be a challenge in meat-chicken-breeder operations and has emerged as a problem for free-range meat chickens. Here, using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and phylogenomic analysis, we investigate isolate relatedness during outbreaks of fowl cholera on a free-range meat chicken farm over a 5-year period. Our genomic analysis revealed that while all outbreak isolates were sequence type (ST) 20, they could be separated into two distinct clades (clade 1 and clade 2) consistent with difference in their lipopolysaccharide (LPS) type. The isola…

Pasteurella multocida Infections with Unusual Modes of Transmission from Animals to Humans: A Study of 79 Cases with 34 Nonbite Transmissions.

Pasteur discovered the causative agent of fowl cholera (Pasteurella multocida) in 1880. Since then, multiple zoonotic infections affecting humans have been reported. P. multocida infections usually result from bites of cats or dogs. The earliest reports of nonbite transmissions (NBTs) were attributed to cat scratches and lung colonization. More recently, multiple modes of unusual NBTs have been reported, including animal exposures with no direct contact. Here, we report 79 cases of pet-associated infections, with 34 NBTs. Previously unreported and unsuspected, novel modes of NBTs presented inc…

MHC haplotype and susceptibility to experimental infections (Salmonella Enteritidis, Pasteurella multocida or Ascaridia galli) in a commercial and an indigenous chicken breed.

In three independent experimental infection studies, the susceptibility and course of infection of three pathogens considered of importance in most poultry production systems, Ascaridia galli, Salmonella Enteritidis and Pasteurella multocida were compared in two chicken breeds, the indigenous Vietnamese Ri and the commercial Luong Phuong. Furthermore, the association of the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) with disease-related parameters was evaluated, using alleles of the LEI0258 microsatellite as markers for MHC haplotypes. The Ri chickens were found to be more resistant to A. galli an…

Development of a MALDI-TOF MS model for differentiating haemorrhagic septicaemia-causing strains of Pasteurella multocida from other capsular groups.

Pasteurella multocida capsular types A, D, and F cause disease in many animal hosts, including bovine respiratory disease in cattle, which is one of the most globally significant animal diseases. Additionally, P. multocida capsular types B and E cause haemorrhagic septicaemia, a devastating disease primarily of cattle, water buffalo, and bison that develops rapidly with high mortality. Haemorrhagic septicaemia mostly occurs in developing countries and has potential to emerge elsewhere in the world. The diagnosis of haemorrhagic septicaemia currently requires recognition of compatible gross or …

Pasteurella multocida activates apoptosis via the FAK-AKT-FOXO1 axis to cause pulmonary integrity loss, bacteremia, and eventually a cytokine storm.

Pasteurella multocida is an important zoonotic respiratory pathogen capable of infecting a diverse range of hosts, including humans, farm animals, and wild animals. However, the precise mechanisms by which P. multocida compromises the pulmonary integrity of mammals and subsequently induces systemic infection remain largely unexplored. In this study, based on mouse and rabbit models, we found that P. multocida causes not only lung damage but also bacteremia due to the loss of lung integrity. Furthermore, we demonstrated that bacteremia is an important aspect of P. multocida pathogenesis, as evi…

Pasteurella multocida infection induces blood-brain barrier disruption by decreasing tight junctions and adherens junctions between neighbored brain microvascular endothelial cells.

Meningitis induced by Pasteurella multocida has been substantially described in clinical practice in both human and veterinary medicine, but the underlying mechanisms have not been previously reported. In this study, we investigated the influence of P. multocida infection on the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) using different models. Our in vivo tests in a mouse model and in vitro tests using human brain microvascular endothelial cell (hBMEC) model showed that P. multocida infection increased murine BBB permeability in mice and hBMEC monolayer permeability. Furthermore, we observ…

Virulence genes and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus region (ERIC) profiling reveals highly diverse genetic population among avian strains of Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is a multispecies pathogen with certain host specific capsular types but interspecies transmission cannot be overlooked. Knowing the diversity of P. multocida in a geographical location is essential to formulate a vaccination programme. Diversity among the P. multocida isolates from different avian species recovered in the state of Tamil Nadu, India was studied using enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus region (ERIC)-PCR and virulence gene profiling (VP). Capsular typing revealed that 44 (97.78%) strains belonged to capsular type A while only one (2.22%) strain…

Toxigenic and non-toxigenic Pasteurella multocida genotypes, based on capsular, LPS, and virulence profile typing, associated with pneumonic pasteurellosis in Iran.

Pasteurella multocida is an important cause of pneumonic pasteurellosis in small ruminants. Its prevalence was investigated in 349 pneumonic lungs from sheep (n = 197) and goats (n = 152), and genotypes of isolates were determined by capsular and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) typing as well as by virulotyping based on the detection of 12 virulence-associated genes. P. multocida was isolated from 29.4 % of sheep lungs and 13.8 % of goat lungs. A (78.5 %) and D (21.5 %) capsular types, as well as L3 (41.8 %) and L6 (57.0 %) LPS genotypes, were detected, with the A:L6 genotype being the most prevalent…
