Paternal occupational exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields and risk of adverse pregnancy outcome.

BACKGROUND: During the last decades, public concern that radiofrequency radiation (RFR) may be related to adverse reproductive outcomes has been emerging. Our objective was to assess associations between paternal occupational exposure to RFR and adverse pregnancy outcomes including birth defects using population-based data from Norway. METHODS: Data on reproductive outcomes derived from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway were linked with data on paternal occupation derived from the general population censuses. An expert panel categorized occupations according to exposure. Using logistic reg

Delayed parenthood and the risk of cesarean delivery--is paternal age an independent risk factor?

BACKGROUND: Between 1995 and 2001, the average cesarean section rates in Taiwan were as high as 33.34 percent. This study set out to determine the independent effects of paternal age on the likelihood of cesarean delivery among a sample of Taiwanese women. METHODS: Logistic regressions were used to analyze 310,574 singleton deliveries by nulliparous women in Taiwan between 1999 and 2001, linking data abstracted from birth certificates and from the National Health Insurance claims database. After controlling for socioeconomic, pregnancy, and obstetric complications, as well as institutional fa

Mosaic paternal uniparental (iso)disomy for chromosome 20 associated with multiple anomalies.

Uniparental disomy for a number of human chromosomes is associated with clinical abnormalities. We report a child with a complex chromosomal rearrangement involving chromosome 20 (45,XY,psu dic (20;20)(p13;p13)) and paternal uniparental isodisomy for chromosome 20 in peripheral blood and bone marrow. This patient had multiple congenital abnormalities including microtia/anotia, micrencephaly, congenital heart disease, neuronal subependymal heterotopias, and colonic agangliosis. Molecular studies on DNA from peripheral blood demonstrated paternal uniparental inheritance of chromosome 20. However

Concurrence of fragile X and Klinefelter syndromes: report of a new case of paternal nondisjunction.

The concurrence of fragile X and Klinefelter syndromes would be expected occasionally. Therefore, the analysis of the literature showed that the concurrence of both conditions was found at least 16 times. Among them, only seven cases were analyzed for the parental origin of the extra chromosome X, suggesting that the maternal nondisjunction was preferentially inherited. We present the third patient with the concurrence of fragile X and Klinefelter syndromes, in which the parental origin of the supernumerary chromosome X was paternal. This finding reinforces that the parent-of-origin predisposi

Maternal alleles acquiring paternal methylation patterns in biparental complete hydatidiform moles.

We previously mapped a maternal locus responsible for biparental complete hydatidiform moles (BiCHMs) to 19q13.4. The two index patients had a total of 14 molar pregnancies, eight abortions at various developmental stages, and one 16-year-old healthy offspring. We suggested that the defective gene deregulates the expression of imprinted genes. Here, we report the methylation status of four imprinted genes in two BiCHMs from the two sisters, the 16-year-old normal offspring, and two sporadic BiCHMs from unrelated patients. Using two bisulfite-based methods, we demonstrate a general trend of abn

Paternally derived twinning: a two century examination of records of one Scottish name.

Paternal influence on twinning was investigated through a study of all the state and church records of Scotland for the period 1800-2000 (nine generations) in relation to one Scottish patronymic - in total 50,000 births. All recorded twins born with the chosen patronymic were identified and their whole paternal ascent and descent on the male line were charted for twins. There were established three pedigrees A, B and C manifesting clear paternal twinning hereditary transmission. Detailed familial reproduction patterns were traced for pedigree A, including phenotypic identification of twin zygo

MECP2 mutations in sporadic cases of Rett syndrome are almost exclusively of paternal origin.

Rett syndrome (RTT) is an X-linked neurodevelopmental disorder that apparently is lethal in male embryos. RTT almost exclusively affects female offspring and, in 99.5% of all cases, is sporadic and due to de novo mutations in the MECP2 gene. Familial cases of RTT are rare and are due to X-chromosomal inheritance from a carrier mother. We analyzed the parental origin of MECP2 mutations in sporadic cases of RTT, by analysis of linkage between the mutation in the MECP2 gene and intronic polymorphisms in 27 families with 15 different mutations, and we found a high predominance of mutations of pate

Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus in a child with paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6.

We report a male infant with transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM; MIM 601410), macroglossia, hypertelorism, umbilical hernia, inguinoscrotal hernia and onychomycosis. Diabetes mellitus was diagnosed 10 days after birth and resolved after 6.5 months of treatment. Genetic investigation indicated the presence of paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 (UPD 6). The finding of paternal UPD 6 allows prediction of a transient, rather than permanent NDM, and no increased recurrence risk of TNDM in subsequent pregnancies. Therefore, finding of NDM should be a strong indicator for genetic tes

Two subphenotypes of childhood asthma that differ in maternal and paternal influences on asthma risk.

Asthma is a phenotypically heterogeneous disease. Two subgroups are defined here based initially on skin test reactivity to the allergen Alternaria at age 6 from among a large population of children born and raised in the Southwestern desert environment of Tucson, Arizona. When compared with asthma among Alternaria-positive subjects, asthma among Alternaria-negative subjects was associated with lower levels of total serum IgE, no relation to local aeroallergen skin tests, a younger age at diagnosis, greater remittance by age 11, and more frequent wheezing lower respiratory illnesses (LRIs) in

Angelman syndrome due to paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 15: a milder phenotype?

The Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurological disorder characterized by severe mental retardation, absent speech, seizures, gait disturbances, and a typical age-dependent facial phenotype. Most cases are due to an interstitial deletion on the maternally inherited chromosome 15, in the critical region q11-q13. Rare cases also result from paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 15. In a group of 14 patients with sporadic AS diagnosed in Switzerland, we found 2 unrelated females with paternal isodisomy for the entire chromosome 15. Their phenotypes were milder than usually seen in this syndrome:

Characterization of antibodies induced by paternal lymphocyte immunization in couples with recurrent spontaneous abortion.

This study was designed to identify and characterize the allo- and autoantibodies induced following successful paternal lymphocyte immunization to prevent recurrent spontaneous abortion. Firstly the titers of maternal anti-paternal antibodies in women with successful pregnancies as determined by the flow cytometry crossmatch (FCXM) were highly variable; however, in all cases, the initial pre-immunization titers were negative and the post-immunization titers were positive by the FCXM in successfully treated women. Secondly, the specificities of maternal alloantibodies to paternal HLA antigens (

Treatment of recurrent spontaneous abortion by immunization with paternal lymphocytes: results of a controlled trial.

PROBLEM: It remains unclear whether maternal immunization with paternal lymphocytes prior to conception improves the reproductive outcome in women with recurrent abortion in whom all secondary causes have been excluded. METHOD: A double-blind placebo controlled trial was instituted in women with unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion, comparing immunization with 400 million paternal to 400 million maternal (autologous) lymphocytes. The groups were compared in a paired sequential trials chart, by logistic regression, and, in addition, a meta-analysis of this and other published trials was

An aetiological study of 290 XXY males, with special reference to the role of paternal age.

Data on 290 non-mosaic 47,XXY males have been analysed for possible associations with parental ages at birth, season of birth, sex ratio among sibs, and twinning. Comparison with matched population controls revealed a highly significant association with parental age, which was fully explained by dependence on maternal age and maternal age alone. The maternal age effect was determined with greater precision than in an earlier study of the same material, in which siblings were used as controls, and was estimated to result in an increased risk of between 5% and 10% per annum (p.a.). The estimated

Paternal histocompatibility (HLA) antigens and maternal anti-HLA antibodies in herpes gestationis.

It has been suggested that anti-HLA antibodies might be involved in the pathogenesis of herpes gestationis (HG). Accordingly, we have studied the frequency and specificity of such antibodies in 26 female patients with immunologically proven HG. In addition, to further investigate the potential association of the husband's antigens in the development of this disorder, we have performed HLA typing in 20 of the husbands of these women. HLA-DR2 was found in 50% of the husbands (controls 25%, p = 0.04). The increase was more pronounced in the husbands of patients with the HLA-DR3, DR4 combination (

Paternal Involvement and Postpartum Fatigue: The Mediation Role of Perceived Maternal Parenting Self-Efficacy.

AIMS: Perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy is negatively correlated with postpartum fatigue, and paternal involvement is positively correlated with perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy. However, studies examining whether perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy exhibits a statistical mediating association between paternal involvement and postpartum fatigue are scarce. This study aimed to construct structural equation models to examine whether perceived maternal parenting self-efficacy shows a statistical mediating association in the hypothesized relationship between paternal invo

The role of paternal obesity in fetal development, pregnancy complications, and childhood outcomes: a systematic review.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease theory proposes that environmental influences during early life have long-term effects on health outcomes. Although maternal factors have been extensively studied, the impact of paternal obesity on fetal development and pregnancy outcomes has received limited attention. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of paternal obesity on fetal development and pregnancy complications within the DOHaD framework. English-language studies published between 2020 and 2025 were searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library
