DNA repair and human pathology.

Disorders in the DNA repair in the human lymphocytes isolated from patients with Marfan's syndrome, homocystinuria, schizophrenia, and gout have been found. In this investigation criteria used estimating the DNA repair were the following: host cell reactivation (vaccinia virus reactivation) and its mutagenesis, DNA repair synthesis, resynthesis of DNA breakages. Lymphoblastoid interferon was used as a modulator of DNA repair activity. Pretreatment of normal human cells with interferon stimulated all steps of DNA repair. In human cells with disorders, interferon stimulated DNA repair (XP) in so

Pathology of the otic capsule.

The otic capsule is unique in retaining calcified cartilage, known as globuli interossei, throughout life and shows changes consequently, which are peculiar to it. In Paget's disease of bone, the otic capsule appears resistant to involvement and this occurs with extensive disease at a late stage. In contrast, otosclerosis is a new bone formation of unknown cause that is limited to the otic capsule. In osteogenesis imperfecta, the poor formation of collagen leads to abnormally thin bony trabeculae with a poorly formed otic capsule. In osteopetrosis, the otic capsule is greatly expanded by incre

Pathology of chronic airflow obstruction.

Classification of chronic airflow obstruction may be based on the site of the obstructing lesions. It is seldom that only one type of lesion is present, but one may often dominate. In chronic bronchitis, the major disease of large airways, chronic mucus hypersecretion, is reflected by an increase in size of bronchial mucous glands. This may be a factor in airway narrowing, especially with coexisting edema of the airway wall. Excess intralumenal mucus compounds the obstruction. Increased airways reactivity is present in 15 to 70 percent of patients with chronic airflow obstruction. Increased ai

[The pathology of Meckel's diverticulum].

Sixteen cases of Meckel's diverticulum are reported, 14 of them detected during emergency operative intervention for acute surgical abdomen and 2 during planned operation. The complicated forms of Meckel's diverticulum were 10: acute diverticulitis 4 (25 per cent), intestinal obstruction 4 (25 per cent), neoplastic process 1 (6.25 per cent), intestinal hemorrhage 1 (6.25 per cent). Symptom-free were 43.75 per cent of the diverticuli. The clinical symptoms of acute diverticulitis resembled much those of acute appendicitis. The method of choice for its surgical management is cuneiform resection

The duodenum. Part 3: Pathology.

Duodenal pathology includes various developmental malformations and acquired lesions. This report provides brief descriptions of various congenital anomalies of the duodenum, including stenosis and atresia, annular pancreas and ectopic duodenal pancreatic tissue, megaduodenum, duodenal diverticula, preduodenal portal vein, and paraduodenal fossae. Acquired lesions, such as duodenal ulcer, tumors, vascular compression, and duodenal trauma are also described.

[Diarrhea and functional digestive pathology].

Functional bowel disorders are the most frequent cause of chronic diarrhoea. Functional disorders may present as typical "diarrhée motrice" (colonic hypermotility) or as watery diarrhoea. The diagnosis cannot be made unless an organic cause has been ruled out. Although colonic motor abnormalities have been described in some patients, its physiopathology remains obscure. Treatment is the same as for functional bowel disorders, i.e. fibres and antidiarrhoeal drugs.

[Benign pleural pathology of asbestos].

The most frequent benign lesions of the pleura created by asbestos are fibro-hyaline plaques, i.e. thick areas of collagen located on the parietal pleura and gradually becoming calcified. Less common is benign pleural effusion the cause of which is not always easy to determine. To these must be added an extensive pleural fibrosis with functional repercussions that are not negligible, and round pseudotumoral atelectasias. These pleural asbestos-induced lesions are often observed after a low intensity exposure, but they appear as a rule after more than 20 years of latency. While they betray a pr

Pituitary pathology in Cushing's disease.

Pituitaries of 137 cases with Cushing's disease were microscopically and immunohistologically studied. Many alterations and parameters (sex, age, anamnesis, cortisol plasma levels, tumor size, invasiveness, localization, differentiation of adenomas, immunohistological hormone content, capillarity, recurrences, peritumorous ACTH cell hyperplasia, and Crooke's cells) were analyzed and compared. Whereas most parameters were not correlated, we found some important statistically significant correlations: Undifferentiated adenomas are more frequently invasive than differentiated ones. Invasive adeno

Renal pathology in pre-eclampsia.

Pre-eclampsia affects the kidney both functionally and morphologically. Renal haemodynamics decrease and urinary protein excretion increases, in part due to lesions affecting the glomerulus, where a combination of changes produces a characteristic appearance and permits differentiation of pre-eclamptic nephropathy from other glomerular alterations associated with hypertension in pregnancy. In pre-eclampsia the glomerulus is diffusely enlarged and bloodless, due not to proliferation, but to hypertrophy of the intracapillary cells. These alterations, best described ultrastructurally, include hyp

Pathology of Langerhans cell histiocytosis.

The spectrum of the histopathology of Langerhans cell histiocytosis was presented with special attention paid to the pathologic Langerhans cell as the diagnostic lesional cell. Features that distinguish this histiocyte from others are defined by electron microscopic demonstration of Birbeck granules and by immunohistochemical characteristics such as possession of antigenic determinant(s) that react with the monoclonal antibody T6. The relationship between Langerhans cells and the other histiocytes from which they are derived seems to be determined by events initiated by surface antigens reacti…

Appendicectomy in childhood: pathology found.

A review of the operation and pathology reports from 500 consecutive childhood appendicectomies by one surgeon revealed true acute appendicitis in 64% of patients, other pathology in 19.8% and normal operation findings and histology in 16.2%. When a normal appendix was found at operation, search of the adjacent peritoneal cavity produced a positive yield in 14% of searches, including abnormality in the small bowel in 4%, in the omentum or mesentery in 3% and in the female pelvic organs in 7%. Of appendices deemed normal by the surgeon 8.7% were histologically inflamed and of those deemed infla…

Pathology of otosclerosis: a review.

Otosclerosis is a bone disorder of unknown etiology confined to the otic capsule. Failure of remodeling of newly formed vascular, woven bone (otospongiosis) results in sclerotic bone (otosclerosis) with abnormal osteons. Involvement of the oval window causes conductive hearing loss. Electron microscopic, histochemical, and biochemical studies identify normal cellular and matrix components of otosclerotic bone without providing clues to the abnormal bone formation and resorption. Plastic-embedded, nondecalcified histologic sections with in vivo tetracycline labels permit the study of mineraliza

Cutaneous pathology following etoposide therapy.

Etoposide (VP-16) is a semisynthetic podophyllotoxin derivative that is active against a number of solid and hematologic malignancies. Previously reported cutaneous complications include Stevens-Johnson syndrome and radiation recall. We report 4 cases of cutaneous eruptions with distinctive histopathologic changes following etoposide therapy. Diffuse erythematous macules and papules developed 5-9 days after initiation of etoposide therapy and resolved spontaneously within 3 weeks. Histologic examination revealed epidermal maturation disturbances with scattered markedly enlarged individual kera

Ischemic pathology of the colon.

Ischemic colitis is a disease with a polymorphic clinical picture, which may be of a formidable gravity in gangrenous forms. Its etiologies are varied and more and more due to a low arterial output. The examinations permitting to establish the diagnosis are barium enema and mostly colonoscopy which should be performed early and repeated often. The treatment vary according to the severity of the disease; prognosis is always reserved.
