A short length of hospital stay is not associated with risk of readmission among hip fracture patients - a Swedish national register-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital length of stay (LoS) after a hip fracture likely mirrors health status; however, a too short hospitalization might increase the risk of readmission. In this national register-based study, we investigated the association between LoS after a hip fracture and the risk of readmissions. METHODS: 73,551 patients with a first hip fracture between 2012 and 2019 were followed for 4 months after discharge. LoS was categorized by cubic splines and the association with readmissions was analyzed with Cox regression models. RESULTS: The mean LoS was 11 ± 6 days and 25% of the study po

Postoperative Complications, Readmissions, Lengths of Stay, and Cost Analyses of Patients Who Have Atrial Septal Defects After Total Joint Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are a common congenital heart defect. This study aimed to determine whether patients diagnosed with ASDs undergoing total joint arthroplasty have differences in 1) medical complications, 2) readmissions, 3) lengths of stay (LOS), and 4) costs. METHODS: Using an administrative claims data set, a retrospective query from 2010 to 2020 was performed. The ASD patients were 1:5 ratio matched with controls, yielding a total of 45,695 total knee arthroplasty (TKA) (ASD = 7,635, control = 38,060) and 18,407 total hip arthroplasty (THA) (ASD = 3,084, control = 1

Risk factors for ninety-day readmissions following full-endoscopic transforaminal lumbar discectomy for 1542 patients in the biggest spine institutes in Korea.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic techniques are becoming popular among spine surgeons because of their advantages. Though the advantages of endoscopic spine surgery are evident and patients can be discharged home within hours of surgery, readmissions can be sought for incomplete relief of leg pain, recurrent disc herniation, and recurrent leg pain. We aim to find out the factors related to the readmission of patients treated for lumbar pathologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of the data between the time duration of 2012 and 2022. Patients in the age group of 18-85 years,

Very low rate of readmission after an early discharge outpatient model for autografting in multiple myeloma patients: an Italian multicenter retrospective study.

We analyzed the main modalities and clinical outcomes of the early discharge outpatient model in autologous stem cell transplantation (EDOM-ASCT) for multiple myeloma in Italy. EDOM-ASCT was employed in 382 patients, for a total of 522 procedures, between 1998 and 2012. Our study showed high homogeneity among centers in terms of inclusion criteria, supportive care, and in hospital readmission criteria. Overall, readmissions during the aplastic phase occurred in 98 of 522 transplantations (18.8%). The major extrahematological complication was neutropenic fever in 161 cases (30.8%), which requir

In-hospital inflammatory-nutritional-renal trajectory phenotypes and 90-day readmission or mortality in patients with acute decompensated heart failure: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Patients hospitalized with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) remain at high risk for early readmission and death after discharge. Static biomarkers may not fully capture the evolving inflammatory, nutritional, and renal status during hospitalization. We aimed to identify in-hospital inflammatory-nutritional-renal trajectory phenotypes and assess their associations with 90-day post-discharge outcomes. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 633 adults hospitalized with ADHF between January 2018 and December 2025 who survived to discharge and had seria

Acute Care Outcomes and 30-Day Readmission Among Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease Hospitalized for Acute Heart Failure: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) commonly coexists with acute heart failure (HF), yet the short-term prognostic implications of PAD severity during HF hospitalization are uncertain. Using nationally representative data, we queried all adult (≥18 years) index admissions with a primary diagnosis of acute HF. Cohorts were stratified into 3 groups according to PAD presence and severity using the Rutherford classification. Patients with Rutherford categories 0-3 were classified as PAD, those with categories 4-6 as critical limb ischemia (CLI), and all remaining cohorts without PAD comprised the non-

Association of acute-course electroconvulsive therapy pathway markers with same-hospital psychiatric readmission in patients with major depressive disorder: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective acute treatment for severe major depressive disorder (MDD), but whether two routinely captured acute-course ECT pathway markers-time from admission to first ECT and total acute-course session count-are associated with longer-term readmission is unclear. We examined their associations with same-hospital psychiatric readmission, overall and across baseline suicidality. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 4004 inpatients with MDD who received modified ECT during the index hospitalization at a tertiary psychiatric hospital

SARC-CalF using calf circumference adjusted for BMI predicts 6-mo readmission and mortality in hospitalized patients: a secondary analysis of a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a prevalent condition associated with worse clinical outcomes in hospitalized patients. The SARC-CalF is an accurate instrument for its screening; however, it includes the calf circumference (CC) measure as a criterion, which is influenced by adiposity. An adjustment for CC based on body mass index (BMI) has been proposed, but the literature lacks studies evaluating the SARC-CalF using adjusted CC. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the SARC-CalF with BMI-adjusted CC and compare it between adult and older hospitalized patients. METHODS:

Risk stratification with explainable machine learning for 30-day procedure-related mortality and 30-day unplanned readmission in patients with peripheral arterial disease.

Predicting 30-day procedure-related mortality risk and 30-day unplanned readmission in patients undergoing lower extremity endovascular interventions for peripheral artery disease (PAD) may assist in improving patient outcomes. Risk prediction of 30-day mortality can help clinicians identify treatment plans to reduce the risk of death, and prediction of 30-day unplanned readmission may improve outcomes by identifying patients who may benefit from readmission prevention strategies. The goal of this study is to develop machine learning models to stratify risk of 30-day procedure-related mortalit
