BACKGROUND: Single cross-sectional area of muscle at the third lumbar vertebra (L3MA) is gold standard to estimate skeletal muscle mass (SMM), and L3 muscle index (L3MI, L3MA/height(2)) is used to determine sarcopenia. Forty-three consecutive cases of Poland's syndrome were analyzed and the relevant literature was reviewed. The syndrome is not hereditary and is of unknown origin. Between March 1994 and June 2003, 80 patients with brachial plexus palsy underwent a trapezius transfer. There were 11 women and 69 men with a mean age of 31 years (18 to 69). Before operation a full evaluation of muscle function in the affected arm was carried out. A completely flail arm was found in 37 patients (46%). We describe a 56-year-old female with absence of the right pectoralis muscles, aplasia of the right breast, and skeletal deformities of the right hand, typical of Poland's syndrome. Following complaints of lower abdominal pain, a CT examination revealed an 8-cm mass in the right anterior pelvic wall.
