An intervention improving prescribing practices and monitoring drugs availability in a district.

To improve the quality of health care in Nepal, supervision/ monitoring involving periodic visits by the district supervisor to health facilities (top-down approach) is in practice. It is not objectively implemented because of time and financial constraints and terrain of the country. To assess the effectiveness of a pre-tested strategy i.e. peer-group discussion with self-assessment piloted through the district health system in improving quality of care. A pre-post pilot study was conducted in 41 PHC facilities of Chitwan district of Central Nepal. The intervention included small-group traini

Patients as peer preceptors for orthopedic oncology rehabilitation patients.

This article describes a peer preceptor program that trains patients who have experienced limb preservation surgeries and managed long-term rehabilitative therapy to support and teach newly diagnosed patients through their rehabilitation. This preceptor program was designed to complement the professional counseling and support that rehabilitation staff provide to patients and their families. Training includes communication techniques, practice sessions using videotaped scenes of patients and their families, as well as role-playing. Experienced patients who became preceptors as a result of this

Teen Line: a descriptive analysis of a peer telephone listening service.

Teen Line is a peer telephone listening service for adolescents. During its first year of operation, 2,270 phone calls were received. After an initial novelty effect, counts document a consistent level of use of the service. Two-thirds of the callers were female. Although 4% of topics discussed dealt with crisis situations (suicide, physical abuse), 96% were concerned with common, less urgent adolescent issues, such as peer relationships, family dynamics, and the need to have someone "just to talk to." This paper presents a model for an adolescent listening service and provides data garnered o

[Clinical picture and development of transsexualism].

The results of a clinical study of 33 patients with transsexualism (TS) have shown that TS is a pathological state of the person whose essence lies in the polar discrepancy of the biological sex with the forming psychic sex. It can be described as a true inversion of sexual identification and orientation. The formation of TS has been found to have a regular pattern. Four types of TS development have been identified. It has been shown that TS predisposes toward a high risk of suicidal behavior. It is suggested that the development of TS may be evaluated as autochthonous.

Development and Pilot Test of a Novel Digital Social Support Intervention for Reducing Hazardous Alcohol Use.

BACKGROUND: Community-based recovery organizations (e.g., mutual-help groups) can be a potent source of social support that facilitates addiction recovery. To increase awareness of and engagement with these organizations, we developed a digital intervention called Let's Do Addiction Recovery Together! (LDART) for individuals who want to reduce their hazardous alcohol use. LDART encourages daily goal-setting, provides motivational video messages from peers, and provides information on recovery organizations. METHODS: We conducted a single-arm study to evaluate feasibility, acceptability, and p

Within-person dynamics of identity-based discrimination, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and social support among multicultural adolescents in South Korea.

In South Korea, multicultural (damunhwa) adolescents represent a growing population that continues to encounter identity-based discrimination in school and peer contexts. Using six annual waves of data from multicultural adolescents in South Korea (N = 1635; 50.5% girls; ages 10-16), this study employed random-intercept cross-lagged panel models to examine within-person prospective associations among discrimination, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and perceived family, peer, and teacher support. Higher-than-usual life satisfaction predicted lower subsequent perceived discrimination across all

Peer Support in Online Women's Health Communities: Mixed Methods Formative Analysis of Reddit Discourse.

BACKGROUND: Stigmatized women's health issues, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, are often marginalized or dismissed in traditional clinical settings. This drives individuals to seek peer support in anonymous online communities such as Reddit. While these digital platforms host critical discussions, they are often designed as static information repositories, failing to account for the complex emotional, temporal, and cultural dynamics that shape users' support needs. There is a disconnect between the lived experiences of users-particularly feelings of clinical dismiss

Trajectories of cross-ethnic friendships and their associations with school adjustment in ethnic minority adolescents.

Cross-ethnic peer relations are pivotal for ethnic minority adolescents. However, there is limited understanding of how their cross-ethnic friendships with majority peers in school develop over time. Addressing this, this study aimed to investigate individual trajectories of cross-ethnic friendship in school and how they predict long-term school adjustment. Our sample consisted of 1,445 Turkish- and Moroccan-heritage minority adolescents in 70 Belgian middle schools (52.6% boys, Mage = 15.07; 76.3% second generation), followed across three annual waves over 3 years. Latent growth mixture model

Development of a community-based peer-support intervention to improve contraceptive agency and diffuse self-injectable contraception in Uganda: Application of the human-centered design approach.

BACKGROUND: The low use of self-injectable contraception, coupled with the recognition that many individuals need support beyond training to use self-care technologies successfully, suggests the need for innovative programming. We describe the participatory human-centered design process we used in two districts of Uganda to develop a community-based peer support intervention to improve women's agency to make and act on contraceptive decisions and help diffuse self-injectable contraception. METHODS: The design team included multi-disciplinary researchers from Uganda and the United States, repr

Peer Support for Caregivers of People Living with Posterior Cortical Atrophy in Melbourne, Australia: A Feasibility Study.

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a rare form of young-onset dementia that causes early visuospatial and visuoperceptual deficits. The symptom profile of Posterior Cortical Atrophy leads to very specific care needs for those affected, who often rely on informal caregivers (including friends and family). Rare dementia support groups can be useful for both patients and their caregivers to assist with knowledge sharing, psychoeducation, and the provision of psychosocial support. Despite this, few such support groups exist. The purpose of this study was to examine a PCA support group for caregiv

Adolescents' social needs living with juvenile idiopathic arthritis and their views about digital resources.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) and its related symptoms (e.g. pain) have been associated with interference in the daily life of adolescents with JIA including their friendships. There is little research in that sense and in consequence, interventions designed to improve this area. The objectives of this study are 1) to gain knowledge about the needs of adolescents with JIA, particularly focused on their friendships; 2) to explore the potential of the Internet to help them, and 3) to determine what kind of online resource would be the best and what elements it should include.

Peer behavior toward socially anxious adolescents: classroom observations.

This study focused on the relation between adolescents' social anxiety and the way they are treated by classmates. The link between class behavior during oral presentations and the social anxiety of the speakers was investigated. Social anxiety was measured both as a trait variable and as manifest in two state anxiety characteristics. A group of 55 students from Grades 8 and 9 were selected to participate in the study. Class behavior during their presentations was rated by the students themselves, their teacher, and an independent observer. Results showed that negative class behavior was relat

Exploring substance misuse behaviors among black girls in detention: Intersections of trauma, sex, and age.

High risk substance misuse, trauma and gang involvement are prevalent in adolescents and often occur with youth involved with the youth punishment system. Evidence suggests that system involvement is related to trauma histories, substance misuse, as well as gang involvement. This study investigated the associations between individual and peer factors and their relationship to problem drug and alcohol use among Black girls involved with the youth punishment system. Data were collected from 188 Black girls in detention at baseline, as well as 3 and 6 month follow up periods. Measures assessed we

Integration of community health workers (CHWs) and lay/peer workers in universal healthcare systems: a scoping review of high-income countries using the Lévesque conceptual framework of access to healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) are trained lay individuals embedded within and trusted by their communities who help address health system gaps across diverse settings. While CHW models are well established in low- and middle-income countries, their integration in high-income countries with universal healthcare systems remains limited and inconsistent and has not yet been comprehensively synthesised. OBJECTIVES: To map available evidence on the integration of CHWs in high-income countries with universal healthcare systems, including Canada. Specifically, it examined the tools, st

CURE lecture too: MCAT, BCI, and tracking data show students who discussed research data in lecture learned more than peers using traditional textbooks.

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an intervention, a "CURE lecture" approach, that introduced course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) strategies into the lecture setting. Rather than learning biological explanations from a traditional textbook, instead students studied primary literature curated in a reformed research-focused textbook and had discussions of data and experimental design. In control cohorts, reformed active and cooperative pedagogies were used in lecture to engage students in learning traditional textbook content. In experimental cohorts, "lect
