Poor Speech Perception Is Not a Core Deficit of Childhood Apraxia of Speech: Preliminary Findings.

PURPOSE: Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is hypothesized to arise from deficits in speech motor planning and programming, but the influence of abnormal speech perception in CAS on these processes is debated. This study examined speech perception abilities among children with CAS with and without language impairment compared to those with language impairment, speech delay, and typically developing peers. METHOD: Speech perception was measured by discrimination of synthesized speech syllable continua that varied in frequency (/dɑ/-/ɡɑ/). Groups were classified by performance on speech and lan

Computer-mediated support for adolescents with cerebral palsy or spina bifida.

Social support plays a key role in improving health outcomes for children with chronic conditions. Internet connections are an important component of adolescents' social networks and may overcome geographic and environmental barriers for those with disabilities. This article focuses on the processes associated with a 6-month online support intervention for adolescents with cerebral palsy or spina bifida. Specifically, the purpose was to determine the extent to which adolescents used an online peer support intervention, the processes used, and the perceived benefits and satisfaction with the in

Factors associated with the psychological and behavioral adjustment of siblings of youths with spina bifida.

The intensive health management activities associated with spina bifida (SB) often command a pervasive presence in the lives of families and may place some members at risk for psychosocial difficulties. However, research on the risk and protective factors associated with sibling adjustment is limited. Anchored upon a social-ecological theoretical framework, the purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore the relationships between select individual, family, and peer factors and sibling adjustment. A convenience sample of 224 adolescent siblings and parents of youths with SB responded t

Substance Use and Social Influence as Risk Factors for Nicotine and Tobacco Product Use in Adolescents and Young Adults who use Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine and tobacco product (NTP) use in adolescence and young adulthood is associated with negative health and psychosocial outcomes. This study prospectively tested alcohol use, cannabis use, and peer and family NTP use as predictors of NTP use in adolescents and young adults (AYAs) who were NTP naïve or who primarily used electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). METHOD: Participants (N=133) ages 16-22 completed a baseline laboratory visit and follow-up session one year later. Participants' baseline alcohol use, cannabis use, and NTP use by peers and family were tested as r

Melanocyte-Fibroblast Crosstalk Under Visible Light and Infrared-A Exposure: A Narrative Review of Implications for Photoaging and Dyschromia.

Solar radiation extends beyond the ultraviolet spectrum to include visible light and infrared-A wavelengths, which have traditionally been considered biologically inert. Emerging evidence indicates that these longer wavelengths act both independently and in combination to influence communication between skin cells, contributing meaningfully to photoaging and pigmentary changes. This narrative review synthesizes existing peer-reviewed research on how visible light and infrared-A radiation alter signaling between dermal and epidermal cells and how these alterations may underlie disorders of pigm

Alcohol use patterns of first-year medical students: II. Psychosocial characteristics associated with drinking level.

Psychosocial characteristics that identified first-year medical students who drank more or less alcohol than their peers were examined. Subjects were 116 freshman medical students (96% of one class) who completed questionnaires about alcohol use, mood, personality, social relationships, and parental alcohol abuse on the first day of school, and 106 (88% of the class) who responded to the same questionnaires in April of the first year. Heavier drinking students (i.e., the upper 25% of the sample) were more likely to be male and single, to have drunk heavily prior to medical school, to come from

What shapes mathematics anxiety in K-12 education? A scoping review of research from 2019 to 2025.

INTRODUCTION: Despite growing interest in mathematics anxiety, comprehensive syntheses of recent K-12 research remain limited. This scoping review aims to map the literature on mathematics anxiety that was published between January 2019 and December 2025. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, this review analyzed 132 empirical studies. The analysis categorized influencing factors into antecedents, processes, and outcomes, while also examining methodological characteristics and interventions. RESULTS: Findings indicate that antecedent factors comprise individual (e.g., gender, grade) and

Contraceptive Conversations among Adolescent Girls and Young Women and Their Partners, Peers, and Older Female Family Members in Lilongwe, Malawi: A QualitativeAnalysis.

In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have high levels of unmet need for contraception, particularly those who are unmarried or nulliparous. Conversations with partners, peers, and family members influence AGYW contraceptive decision-making yet little is known about conversation content and impact or how they vary by relationship status and parity. This paper draws on qualitative data from 60 AGYW (aged 15-24) participating in a sexual and reproductive health study in Malawi to examine contraceptive conversation patterns among participants and their social ties. AGYW's

Influence of physician networks on the implementation of pharmaceutical alternatives to a toxic drug supply in British Columbia.

BACKGROUND: Characterizing the diffusion of adopted changes in policy and clinical practice can inform enhanced implementation strategies to ensure prompt uptake in public health emergencies and other rapidly evolving disease areas. A novel guidance document was introduced at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in British Columbia (BC), Canada, which supported clinicians to prescribe opioids, stimulants, and benzodiazepines. We aimed to determine the extent to which uptake and discontinuation of an initial attempt at a prescribed safer supply (PSS) program were influenced through networks of pr

Perceptions of relationship changes during pregnancy in Latinas: A qualitative study.

Pregnancy is shaped by complex social dynamics and interpersonal changes that influence how expecting mothers connect with their families and others around them. While social support has been linked to better maternal mental health, less is known about how relationships themselves change during pregnancy. This study explores how pregnant Latinas living in the United States perceive changes in their family, partner, and peer relationships and how these evolving connections influence their sense of support. A subset of 48 pregnant Latinas who participated in a larger study took part in a one-on-

Targeting behavioral factors with digital health and shared decision-making to promote cardiac rehabilitation-a narrative review.

Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) represents an important steppingstone for many cardiac patients into a more heart-healthy lifestyle to prevent premature death and improve quality of life years. However, CR is underutilized worldwide. In order to support the development of targeted digital health interventions, this narrative review (I) provides understandings of factors influencing CR utilization from a behavioral perspective, (II) discusses the potential of digital health technologies (DHTs) to address barriers and reinforce facilitators to CR, and (III) outlines how DHTs could incorporate shared
