BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare mesenchymal tumor reported initially in the pleura but that is now reported in widely ranging anatomic sites with a variable clinical course. Solitary fibrous tumor arising from the female genital tract is extremely rare and the management of this condition is controversial.
CASES: We report three cases of female genital tract solitary fibrous tumors displaying different clinical behaviors and review literature with regard to diagnosis, possible prognostic factors, and management of this tumor.

Inverted papilloma of the urinary tract is a rare tumor that consists of uniform urothelial cells with an inverted configuration and a normal urothelial lining. Despite several published reports, the prognostic significance and the potential biologic behavior remain uncertain. We detail a case of synchronous inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder and the renal pelvis and review the published data.

Carcinosarcoma is a malignancy that occurs very rarely in the renal pelvis; thus, only a very limited number of cases has been documented. These tumors are composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous elements. We report here a case of a carcinosarcoma composed of well-differentiated, keratinizing, squamous carcinoma cells and high-grade sarcoma cells. Differently from the cases described so far, this carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis was characterized by the quick recurrence, following complete surgical resection, as a highly disseminated high-grade sarcoma.

We are presenting a case of leukoplakia spread to the bilateral renal pelvis, ureter and bladder in a 52-year-old woman. We believe this case is important because it involves leukoplakia that is more extensive than in any cases previously cited in the literature. No other possible etiologic cause except a heavy smoking habit was defined. Conservative follow-up was preferred to aggressive surgery.

We report a case of a 50-year-old woman with histologically proven cystic hamartoma of the renal pelvis, focusing on the imaging findings and pathologic features. A large multicystic tumor with solid components in the left kidney was enhanced on both contrast-enhanced CT and gadolinium-enhanced MR images. Angiographic images showed irregular tumor vessels with moderate tumor stain.

Two cases of planoepithelial squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis are reported. Primary neoplasms of the renal pelvis are rare. Most are malignant and in the majority are of the transitional cell variety. Squamous cell carcinoma is an unusually rare occurrence.

Six patients with calcified transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis were encountered over a 10-year period, and the radiographic features in these cases are presented. Radiographically discernible calcification is one of the less common manifestations of this lesion, and the pattern of calcification may be variable. However, the combination of a coarse, punctate pattern with a mucosal lesion on excretory or retrograde urography should suggest the diagnosis and prompt further investigation.

We report on 17 patients with rhabdomyosarcoma of the genitourinary organs, retroperitoneal, pelvic, or perineal regions. Treatment was refused by three patients with either bladder or prostatic lesions. The remaining patients were treated with combined modality therapy. The clinical results of three renal pelvic tumors and two ureteral tumors, experienced at Shimizu City Hospital between 1983 and 1985 are reviewed. The average age of the 5 patients was 56.8 years. The ratio of men to women was 4 to 1. The right side was involved in 4 cases and the left side in 1 case. The initial symptom was gross hematuria in all cases. Results of urinary cytology were positive in 3 cases. The prognosis of the patients with a high grade and high stage tumor was poor.

Seven patients with metastatic and/or recurrent transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis treated with systemic chemotherapy are evaluated. The median age of the patients was fifty-five; 6 were men, 6 of the tumors were histologic grade III and Stage C at the time of nephroureterectomy. The tumours of renal pelvis show a polymorphic radiological pattern, often rather difficult to interpret, sometimes even not evident owing to the presence of some other pathology. The most characteristic cases, and to be considered specimen, found in researches executed at different times, are represented by carcinomas, among which the ones showing the most elevated histological malignancy present a more rapid and infiltrative growth, as testified by repeated radiological tests.
