Invalid BC determinations may be responsible for many diagnostic misinterpretations in the classification of low-frequency hearing losses. To reduce the influence from harmonic distortion, BC thresholds are determined during simultaneous, ipsilateral HP masking and composed with the conventionally obtained BC thresholds. Based on normative data a change of greater than or equal to 10 dB HL caused by HP masking is used as the criterion for judging the validity of the conventional BC testing. In 55% (11/20) of ears with low-frequency hearing loss, a decrease in air-bone gap was obtained with HP

The theory of 'weak central coherence' [Happe, F., & Frith, U. (2006). The weak coherence account: Detail-focused cognitive style in autism spectrum disorders. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 36(1), 5-25] implies that persons with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have a perceptual bias for local but not for global stimulus features. The recognition of emotional facial expressions representing various different levels of detail has not been studied previously in ASDs. We analyzed the recognition of four basic emotional facial expressions (anger, disgust, fear and happiness) from

Understanding speech in noisy environments (SPIN) is an important everyday ability, and engaging in musical activities has been proposed as a factor that may support this ability. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying a potential musical advantage in SPIN perception remain unclear. Here we investigated whether musical sophistication is associated with better SPIN perception in a large population-based sample, and whether this relationship is mediated by auditory working memory (AWM), verbal working memory (VWM), or non-verbal intelligence. We recruited 203 participants and measured SPIN

An unexpected loud sound can elicit an acoustic startle reflex and potentially cause a temporary threshold shift (TTS) for hearing and noise-induced tinnitus for a short period of time. This occurs, for example, with the high-amplitude noise burst that accompanies a bright light and impulsive force when police or military use a "flashbang" grenade to temporarily disable or confuse an adversary. This pilot study evaluated the effects of an unexpected loud acoustic impulse sound on human subject performance in terms of (1) word recognition in noise, and (2) sound localization, both examined in a

INTRODUCTION: For the treatment of single-sided deafness (SSD), common treatment choices include a contralateral routing of signals (CROS) hearing aid, a bone conduction device (BCD), and a cochlear implant (CI). The primary aim of this study was to compare speech understanding in noise and binaural benefits in adults with postlingual SSD between preoperative unaided baseline, preoperative CROS and BCD trial devices, and CI, following recommendations from a consensus protocol. In addition, we investigated the effect of masker type on speech understanding.
METHODS: This was a prospective study

OBJECTIVES: The medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system can modify cochlear function to improve sound detection in noise, but its role in speech perception in noise is unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between MOC efferent activity and performance on two speech-in-noise tasks at two signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). It was hypothesized that efferent activity would be more strongly correlated with performance at the more challenging SNR, relative to performance at the less challenging SNR.
DESIGN: Sixteen adults aged 35 to 73 years participated. Subjects had p

This study investigated the relation between the intelligibility of conversational and clear speech produced by older and younger adults and (a) the acoustic profile of their speech (b) communication effectiveness. Speech samples from 30 talkers from the elderLUCID corpus were used: 10 young adults (YA), 10 older adults with normal hearing (OANH) and 10 older adults with presbycusis (OAHL). Samples were extracted from recordings made while participants completed a problem-solving cooperative task (diapix) with a conversational partner who could either hear them easily (NORM) or via a simulated

In order to better understand the role of the vestibular system in postural adjustments on unstable surfaces, we analyzed the effects of galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) on the pattern of muscle activity and joint displacements (ankle knee and hip) of eight intellectually normal participants (control group--CG) and eight control group individuals with Down syndrome (DS) while balancing on seesaws of different heights. The CG individuals adopted a pattern of muscle activation characterized by alternation between ankle agonist and antagonist muscles. The individuals with DS adopted a patter

Cochlear hearing loss is often associated with a loss of basilar-membrane (BM) compression, which in turn may contribute to degraded processing of suprathreshold stimuli. Behavioral estimates of compression may therefore be useful as long as they are valid over a wide range of levels and frequencies. Additivity of forward masking (AFM) may provide such a measure, but research to date lacks normative data from normal-hearing (NH) listeners at high sound levels, which is necessary to evaluate data from hearing-impaired (HI) listeners. The present study measured AFM in six NH listeners for signal

CONTEXT: Visual masking procedures assess the earliest stages of visual processing. Patients with schizophrenia reliably show deficits on visual masking, and these procedures have been used to explore vulnerability to schizophrenia, probe underlying neural circuits, and help explain functional outcome.
OBJECTIVE: To identify and compare regional brain activity associated with one form of visual masking (ie, backward masking) in schizophrenic patients and healthy controls.
DESIGN: Subjects received functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. While in the scanner, subjects performed a backwar

This study investigated whether impaired endogenous attention and enhanced exogenous attention for the processing of nonemotional stimuli were observed in individuals with high social anxiety. In each trial, participants were presented with an endogenous cue at a center, followed by exogenous cues at peripheral locations; subsequently, nonemotional masked targets were presented wherein the subjects were asked to distinguish between the targets. The accuracy rates were influenced by social anxiety only in exogenous conditions. Individuals with high social anxiety exhibited higher accuracy in th

The excessive, indiscriminate use of masking during measurements of pure-tone bone-conduction thresholds can reduce or eliminate air-bone gaps. This may result in an abnormal, audiometrically induced bone-conduction threshold shift and suggest to the otologist the need for auditory brainstem response testing and/or magnetic resonance imaging. A case is presented in which the inappropriate use of the masking plateau method resulted in a reduction of the air-bone gap in an ear with a mild conductive hearing loss. The audiometric Weber test should be used in these cases, and nonmasked bone thresh

Presbycusis is a common form of hearing loss that progresses from high to low frequencies with advancing age. C57BL/6J mice experience a rapid progression of presbycusis-like hearing deficits and thus provide a convenient animal model for evaluating behavioral, physiological and anatomical correlates of the disorder. Previous studies of C57BL/6J mice have relied on short-term observations of age-matched subject groups to reconstruct a time course for auditory pathologies. Such statistical approaches are weakened by the variability of hearing thresholds in young mice and the inconsistent timing

The auditory efferent nerve is a feedback pathway that originates in the brainstem and projects to the inner ear. Although the anatomy and physiology of efferents have been rather thoroughly described, their functional roles in auditory perception are still not clear. Here, we report data in six human subjects who had undergone vestibular neurectomy, during which their efferent nerves were also presumably severed. The surgery had alleviated these subjects' vertigo but also resulted in mild to moderate hearing loss. We designed our experiments with a focus on the possible role of efferents in a

The fluency of people who stutter is affected markedly when auditory feedback is altered, suggesting that stuttering may be associated with hearing. Peripheral hearing problems, however, are no more common in people who stutter than in those who do not. Performance was investigated in a task that involves central auditory processing (backward masking). Children who stuttered had deficits in backward masking (indicated by higher thresholds) compared with a group of fluent control children. The backward-masking thresholds were positively correlated with frequency of stuttering.

Late-onset auditory deprivation or "inactivity" phenomenon has been reported in single cases only because it has not been possible to assemble a larger number of calculable cohorts for which all necessary details concerning individual histories are available. Subjects should not be older than 60 years of age and should have had asymmetric hearing for at least about 10 years or should have been wearers of monaurally fitted hearing aids. The development of late-onset auditory deprivation is presented in 6 single cases. All were assessed by the Freiburg speech discrimination test and the distorte

The overshoot effect can be reduced by temporary hearing loss induced by aspirin or exposure to intense sound. The present study simulated a hearing loss at 4.0 kHz via pure-tone forward masking and examined the effect of the simulation on threshold for a 10-ms, 4.0-kHz signal presented 1 ms after the onset of a 400-ms, broadband noise masker whose spectrum level was 20 dB SPL. Masker frequency was 3.6, 4.0, or 4.2 kHz, and masker level was 80 dB SPL. Subject-dependent delays were determined such that 10 or 20 dB of masking at 4.0 kHz was produced. In general, the pure-tone forward masker did

Patients who had sustained a severe concussion of the brain more than 2 years earlier were tested in choice reaction time tasks in the laboratory in order to investigate their impaired reactive capacity. The focus of investigation was whether specific stages in the chain of the information process are affected by the injury. In addition, driving skills were measured in an instrumented car to determine if reaction time performance is predictive of car driving. In general, patients were much slower than control subjects, both in the reaction time and in the driving tasks. The results obtained in

The effects of cross-hearing from the non-test ear were examined during the acquisition of the auditory brain-stem evoked response (ABR). Effective masking levels were derived from a normal hearing subject and the results used to obtain masked versus unmasked ABR thresholds in varying types of unilateral hearing loss. The results indicate that in the presence of a hearing loss adequate masking of the non-test ear is essential for valid ABR results.

The critical bandwidth in loudness summation was estimated in 20 patients with typical Menière's disease using noise bands centered around 1 kHz. A reduction of the normal loudness difference between broad-band noise and narrow-band noise was present at all except the highest levels. Judged individually, 7 of the 20 patients appeared to have a widened critical band, but in the pooled data the size of the critical band was normal. This was the case in patients with a hearing loss less than 50 dB HL as well as in patients with a hearing loss greater than or equal to 50 dB HL. Expressed in terms
