Impaired central coherence in patients with anorexia nervosa.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of central coherence in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). 22 female patients with AN (median age = 31.50 (QD = 8.13) years) and 33 female healthy controls (HC) (median age = 28.00 (QD = 8.50) years) participated in the study. Their central coherence was assessed with the Rey Complex Figure Task (RCFT). Clinical symptoms were evaluated with the Beck Depression Inventory-II and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory-Form JYZ. The results showed that AN patients' Central Coherence Index and accuracy scores in copy, 3-min delayed recal

Anxiety symptoms in working patients with major depressive disorder treated with vortioxetine: associations with clinical and treatment outcomes in the AtWoRC study.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms are common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and usually confer worse treatment outcomes. The long-term, open-label AtWoRC study in working patients with MDD treated with vortioxetine demonstrated a significant correlation between severity of anxiety symptoms and impaired work productivity. This analysis was undertaken to further explore clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes in patients with different levels of severity of anxiety symptoms at baseline. METHODS: Post hoc analysis in 199 working patients with MDD treated with vortioxetine (1

A preliminary investigation of childhood anxiety/depressive symptomatology and working memory across multiple units of analysis.

This exploratory study examined multiple units of working memory (WM) analysis in a transdiagnostic, treatment-seeking, pediatric sample. This included a) an electroencephalography marker of WM (coupling of theta and gamma oscillations [i.e., theta-gamma coupling] in frontal brain regions), b) WM test performance, and c) parent-reported WM symptoms. A composite score combining each of these units of analysis correlated with self-reported depressive and anxiety symptoms, with only theta-gamma coupling independently predicted anxiety/depressive symptoms. Results confirm prior findings on the ass

COF-Zincon dual signal amplification: A sensitive real-time electrochemical sensor for Zn2+ detection towards anxiety disorder diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, abnormal total zinc levels in serum have emerged as a robust indicator of anxiety disorder. However, measuring total zinc level requires sophisticated instrumentation and specialized personnel. Therefore, if the specific association between Zn2+ in serum and anxiety disorder can be elucidated, it is promising to develop rapid and convenient diagnostic methods for anxiety disorder. In the field of Zn2+ detection, Electrochemical detection has been investigated as a means to quantify Zn2+ with precision, rapidity and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, most current ele

Reciprocal associations between smartphone overdependence and anxiety in adolescents: evidence from a nationally representative survey in the Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Smartphone overdependence (SOD) and anxiety are major concerns in adolescent mental health; however, few studies have examined their bidirectional relationship. This study aimed to examine reciprocal associations between SOD and anxiety among adolescents. METHODS: A secondary analysis was conducted with data from 50,975 adolescents in the 19th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey. SOD was measured using the SOD scale, and anxiety was assessed using the generalized anxiety disorder 7-item scale. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine reciprocal association

Antidepressants may mitigate the effects of prenatal maternal anxiety on infant auditory sensory gating.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal maternal anxiety has detrimental effects on the offspring's neurocognitive development, including impaired attentional function. Antidepressants are commonly used during pregnancy, yet their impact on offspring attention and their interaction with maternal anxiety has not been assessed. The authors used P50 auditory sensory gating, a putative marker of early attentional processes measurable in young infants, to assess the impact of maternal anxiety and antidepressant use. METHOD: A total of 242 mother-infant dyads were classified relative to maternal history of anxiety and

Comparison of four self-report measures and a generic mood question to screen for anxiety during pregnancy in English-speaking women.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly researchers and clinicians have called for perinatal mental health depression screening to be broadened to also screen for significant levels of anxiety. This study therefore aimed to compare the screening performance during pregnancy of four self-report anxiety measures, as well as a generic mood question. METHOD: The measures tested were two measures of general anxiety (the anxiety subscales of the Edinburgh Depression Scale and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale), and two measures of pregnancy specific anxiety by Huizink and colleagues, and Rini and colleagu

Mental Imagery in Social Anxiety in Children and Young People: A Systematic Review.

Current cognitive models of social anxiety disorder (SAD) in adults indicate that negative self-images play a pivotal role in maintaining the disorder. However, little is known about the role of negative imagery in the maintenance of social anxiety for children and young people. We systematically reviewed studies that have investigated the association between imagery and social anxiety in children and young people. Four databases were searched for 'social anxiety' and related terms (including 'social phobia' and 'performance anxiety') combined with 'imagery', 'representation*', and 'observer p…

A Brief Hypnosis Intervention Improves Single-Limb Dynamic Balance in People with Chronic Ankle Instability: A Crossover Experimental Pilot Study.

Ankle sprains are one of the more common musculoskeletal injuries in active populations and can develop into chronic ankle instability (CAI), a condition with uncertain etiology and symptoms that include poor dynamic balance, the ability to maintain balance during movement. The components of CAI are psychophysiological and biomechanical, indicating mind-body connections that can influence the development and persistence of this condition. Preliminary evidence suggests that self-hypnosis, a mind-body therapy, can restore physical performance in conditions like CAI. Twenty-four participants with

[Subjective memory complaints in young adults: the influence of the emotional state].

INTRODUCTION. Many young people today display memory complaints that are not linked to their real cognitive performance. A number of studies have sought to identify the factors involved in this problem, such as anxious-depressive symptoms, the variables of anxiety traditionally being measured as somatic or cognitive manifestations with an activation that is unspecific or not linked to any particular stimulus. AIMS. To perform an exploratory analysis to determine the role played by symptoms of depression and of various subtypes of specific and unspecific anxiety in memory complaints in young ad

Enhanced declarative memory in long-term mindfulness practitioners.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness meditation (MM) practice is considered to benefit physical and mental health. In particular, several studies have shown a beneficial effect of MM practice on memory performance. However, it is still not clear how long-term training affects long-term declarative memory. In this study we aimed to examine whether long-term MM training impacts declarative memory formation for diverse memoranda types, as well as the role of trait mindfulness, and the possible mediating role of anxiety. METHODS: We examined long-term memory performance in 23 experienced MM practitioners and

Physiological and Behavioural Characterisation of a Novel Steroid Sulfatase-Deficient Mouse.

Steroid sulfatase (STS) cleaves sulphate groups from steroid hormones. In humans, STS deficiency is associated with X-linked ichthyosis, an increased predisposition to neurodevelopmental and mood conditions (including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, autism, depression and anxiety), and cardiac arrhythmia risk. Until recently, no single-gene 'knockout' mammalian model existed; previous work in such a model is limited to skin phenotypes. We generated a novel C57BL/6J mouse model with a deletion in exon 2 of Sts. We examined gene expression and enzyme activity in liver and brain samples

Effects of a Scutellaria baicalensis/Crataegus laevigata, magnesium and chromium supplement on stressed individuals: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic stress is prevalent in most societies, impairing cognition, mood, and social functioning. Research suggests that supplements containing extracts from Scutellaria baicalensis root and Crataegus laevigata fruits may offer support in this regard. AIMS: To investigate the acute and chronic effects of a S. baicalensis, C. laevigata, and magnesium/chromium containing herbal supplement on psychological well-being, cognition, and sleep in subjectively stressed but principally healthy adults. METHODS: Forty-three participants (35 analysed) aged 18-75 years received the herbal supp

Characterizing practice-dependent motor learning after a stroke.

BACKGROUND: After stroke, patients must learn to use residual motor function correctly. Consistently, motor learning is crucial in stroke motor recovery. We assessed motor performance, practice-dependent on-line motor learning, and factors potentially affecting them in stroke patients. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional observational study. Twenty-six patients with first brain stroke leading to upper limb motor deficit in the subacute or chronic timeframe were enrolled. They performed a Finger Tapping Task (FTT) with both the affected and unaffected limbs. We assessed how patients learn to pe

Individual variations in maternal care early in life correlate with later life decision-making and c-fos expression in prefrontal subregions of rats.

Early life adversity affects hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis activity, alters cognitive functioning and in humans is thought to increase the vulnerability to psychopathology--e.g. depression, anxiety and schizophrenia--later in life. Here we investigated whether subtle natural variations among individual rat pups in the amount of maternal care received, i.e. differences in the amount of licking and grooming (LG), correlate with anxiety and prefrontal cortex-dependent behavior in young adulthood. Therefore, we examined the correlation between LG received during the first postnatal week and
