Peritonitis is a serious disease requiring aggressive therapy in the hope of effecting a cure. Stabilization of the patient's condition is important; immediate fluid therapy and systemic antibiotics are essential. Surgery is indicated, not only to locate and correct the causative lesion, but to mechanically cleanse the peritoneal cavity by debridement and copious irrigation. Establishment of drainage is also necessary. The drainage method chosen is dictated by the source and the extent of peritoneal contamination, the patient's condition, and the experience of the surgeon.

A case of brucellosis associated with peritonitis, intestinal obstruction, granulomatous hepatitis, inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion and meningitis is reported. Initially, the patient was diagnosed as a case of disseminated tuberculosis and treated accordingly. However, the serologic tests for brucellosis were strongly positive and the patient was subsequently treated as a case of brucellosis and recovered fully. The gastrointestinal manifestations of brucellosis are reviewed.

A 15-year-old male adolescent underwent an appendectomy for acute gangrenous appendicitis. One week after surgery, he underwent an exploratory laparotomy that revealed two pericecal abscesses, which were drained. Two weeks later, he had diffuse peritonitis and underwent another laparotomy, which revealed a sterile fibrinous peritonitis. Oligoarticular inflammatory arthritis, urethritis, and recurrent peritonitis subsequently developed. He was found to be positive for HLA-B27 antigens. This case report illustrates that reactive arthritis (Reiter's syndrome) may develop after peritoneal infectio…

In all the cases, AZT was administered by intravenous injection, and the duration of treatment ranged from 4 to 12 days. Daily dose was 2 g in 4 cases, and 4 g in the remaining 2 cases. Surgical treatment was necessary in 2 cases, whereas in another 2 cases, either LMOX or ABPC was administered in addition to AZT. The clinical results was excellent or good in 5 out of 6 cases. Peritonitis encapsulans is a clinical interest on account of its rarity and the diagnostic difficulties caused by its aspecific symptomatology. A personal case is presented and its ambiguous clinical and instrumental picture is discussed. Diagnosis was finally obtained intraoperatively, after repeated episodes of mechanical ileus had made surgery mandatory.
