Centering equity through in-person data collection: short report.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, data collection activities largely became tele-remote, excluding those who did not have the required technology or digital literacy. METHODS: Between June and September 2020, we collected data in-person from people who use opioids in New York City. Participants were recruited via street intercept and outside four syringe service programs in the city. Surveys were conducted outdoors, with researchers and participants wearing masks and maintaining physical distance. RESULTS: A total of 329 people participated in the survey. Participants reported an ave

Genomic alterations and possible druggable mutations in carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP).

Carcinoma of Unknown Primary (CUP) is a heterogeneous and metastatic disease where the primary site of origin is undetectable. Currently, chemotherapy is the only state-of-art treatment option for CUP patients. The molecular profiling of the tumour, particularly mutation detection, offers a new treatment approach for CUP in a personalized fashion using targeted agents. We analyzed the mutation and copy number alterations profile of 1709 CUP samples deposited in the AACR Project Genomics Evidence Neoplasia Information Exchange (GENIE) cohort and explored potentially druggable mutations. We iden

Scope, Findability, and Quality of Information About Music-Based Interventions in Oncology: Quantitative Content Analysis of Public-Facing Websites at National Cancer Institute-Designated Cancer Centers.

BACKGROUND: Music-based interventions (MBIs) are evidence-based, nonpharmacological treatments that include music therapy (MT) delivered by board-certified music therapists, as well as music services (MS) delivered by other health professionals and volunteers. Despite MBI's growing evidence base in cancer symptom management, it remains unclear how MBI-related information is presented to the public. Over 80% of people with cancer use the internet to find health-related information. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) identifies certain Cancer Centers (CCs) as NCI-designate

Rising prevalence of non-B HIV-1 subtypes in North Carolina and evidence for local onward transmission.

HIV-1 diversity is increasing in North American and European cohorts which may have public health implications. However, little is known about non-B subtype diversity in the southern United States, despite the region being the epicenter of the nation's epidemic. We characterized HIV-1 diversity and transmission clusters to identify the extent to which non-B strains are transmitted locally. We conducted cross-sectional analyses of HIV-1 partial pol sequences collected from 1997 to 2014 from adults accessing routine clinical care in North Carolina (NC). Subtypes were evaluated using COMET and ph

Sense of Coherence in patients with stable schizophrenia: multidimensional determinants from a cross-sectional study of 438 inpatients in Guangzhou, China.

INTRODUCTION: Schizophrenia, a chronic psychiatric disorder, profoundly affects social functioning and quality of life. The Sense of Coherence (SOC), a core construct in salutogenic theory, plays a pivotal role in stress coping and recovery outcomes. While SOC has been studied in general populations, its determinants in stabilized schizophrenia inpatients remain underexplored. This study comprehensively investigated the Sense of Coherence (SOC) profile among stabilized schizophrenia inpatients by assessing its current status, exploring the interrelationships between SOC and demographic factors

Evaluating multivariable clinical prediction models for Parkinson's disease prognosis: A scoping review.

Multivariable clinical prediction models combine two or more patient predictor variables to calculate the probability of a clinical outcome. In persons with Parkinson's disease (PD), clinical prognostic models can be used to predict disease progression or the occurrence of a clinical event. These models can aid in PD prognostication and complement clinical judgment by informing medical decision-making and resource allocation. In this scoping review of the literature from inception through May 2025, we present data from 74 multivariable prognostic models in PD, organized by clinical outcome. We

How to address smoking cessation in HIV patients.

Tobacco consumption is the modifiable risk factor contributing most to the development of non-AIDS-defining events among persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Clinicians' awareness of this problem is critical and not yet adequate. Practical information issued by public health authorities or contained in experts' clinical guidelines regarding how to address smoking cessation in PLWHA is scarce. The aim of this review is to provide physicians with comprehensive and practical information regarding how to identify HIV-positive patients willing to stop smoking and those more likely to succeed, how

Exploring Person-Centered Goals in Speech-Language Pathology Services for Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: Person-centered goals represent meaningful and motivating aspirations of patients and help rehabilitation professionals shape treatment plans to meet individual needs. The purpose of this research note is to describe person-centered goals identified among individuals receiving speech-language pathology services after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and to consider how goals might be informed by existing self-report measures and guide treatment planning. METHOD: Using a retrospective chart review approach, we extracted person-centered goals of patients between the ages of 14 and 65

Development of human pancreatic cancer avatars as a model for dynamic immune landscape profiling and personalized therapy.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the most common form of pancreatic cancer, a disease with dismal overall survival. Advances in treatment are hindered by a lack of preclinical models. Here, we show how a personalized organotypic "avatar" created from resected tissue allows spatial and temporal reporting on a complete in situ tumor microenvironment and mirrors clinical responses. Our perfusion culture method extends tumor slice viability, maintaining stable tumor content, metabolism, stromal composition, and immune cell populations for 12 days. Using multiplexed immunofluorescence and

Differential diagnosis of osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is widely used to identify persons at increased risk for osteoporotic fractures. It does not, per se, give us any diagnostic information that is necessary to determine the best therapeutic approach in an individual case. OBJECTIVE: Identify conditions and tests that may impact on the diagnosis and the treatment of subjects with low bone densitometry scores. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We evaluated clinically, by history, physical examination and laboratory tests, 272 persons with low spinal and/or femoral bone absorptiometry for potential causes of oste

Broadening community engagement in clinical research: Designing and assessing a pilot crowdsourcing project to obtain community feedback on an HIV clinical trial.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Community engagement is widely acknowledged as an important step in clinical trials. One underexplored method for engagement in clinical trials is crowdsourcing. Crowdsourcing involves having community members attempt to solve a problem and then publicly sharing innovative solutions. We designed and conducted a pilot using a crowdsourcing approach to obtain community feedback on an HIV clinical trial, called the Acceptability of Combined Community Engagement Strategies Study. In this work, we describe and assess the Acceptability of Combined Community Engagement Strategies Stu

[Changes in the prevalence of statin use in Germany - findings from national health interview and examination surveys 1997-1999 and 2008-2011].

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based guideline recommendations on lipid lowering drug treatment, in particular statin treatment, play an essential role in the management of dyslipidemias and in the prevention of cardiovascular disease events. In Germany, statutory health insurance data provide information on time trends in the prescription of lipid lowering drugs. However, population-based data regarding changes in user prevalence according to socio-demographic and health-related characteristics are lacking. Based on data from national health interview and examination surveys for adults in Germany 1997-

Applying Indigenous identity definitions in official health statistics: a case study using linked cancer registry data on stomach cancer.

AIM: Ethnicity and descent are two different officially recognised identity definitions for the Indigenous Māori population of New Zealand. Official health statistics are usually reported by Māori ethnicity but not descent, as health collections such as the New Zealand Cancer Registry (NZCR) do not record Māori descent information. We explored the potential of linked administrative data to describe health outcomes by Māori descent using gastric (stomach) cancer as an example. METHODS: The Integrated Data Infrastructure (IDI) was used to source information on Māori descent from the 2013 and 20

Frequent simian foamy virus infection in persons occupationally exposed to nonhuman primates.

The recognition that AIDS originated as a zoonosis heightens public health concerns associated with human infection by simian retroviruses endemic in nonhuman primates (NHPs). These retroviruses include simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), simian T-cell lymphotropic virus (STLV), simian type D retrovirus (SRV), and simian foamy virus (SFV). Although occasional infection with SIV, SRV, or SFV in persons occupationally exposed to NHPs has been reported, the characteristics and significance of these zoonotic infections are not fully defined. Surveillance for simian retroviruses at three research
