Family psychiatric histories of 63 inpatient children with major depressive disorder (MDD) and 63 matched inpatient psychiatric controls were compared. MDD, anxiety disorders, somatization disorder and antisocial personality disorder (ASP) were significantly more common (P < 0.05) in the family histories of MDD probands. When family histories of depressed/anxious (D/A) versus depressed/behavior disordered (D/B) children were compared, the D/B group had more alcohol abuse (P < 0.05) and antisocial personality disorder (P < 0.08) than the D/A group. This report supports findings from earlier stu

Interview survey data were collected on a large (n = 4730) general population sample of adults subsequently classified as "never homeless" (NH) or "formerly homeless" (FH), with the latter group consisting of persons who had past experience of at least a one-month period with no regular place to live. The objective was to analyze differences, as a function of this classification, in the prevalence, age of onset, comorbidity, temporal sequencing, and service utilization pertinent to alcohol-use and other psychiatric disorders. Almost half of the FH group were found to have a one-year DSM diagno

OBJECTIVE: Which theoretical and practical competences do the neurological and psychiatric case histories of the Hippocratic Corpus convey?
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 431 Hippocratic case histories have been studied for reports and communication on the diagnostics, treatment and prognosis of single persons and groups of patients suffering from neurological and psychiatric diseases.
RESULTS: In the 7 books of the Hippocratic Epidemics, a total of 128 patients with neurological and psychiatric symptoms are described. Epidemic fever and its variants were the leading predisposing conditions and t

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) poses significant challenges for early identification and diagnosis due to its intricate symptomatology that overlaps with other psychiatric illnesses. To address this challenge, the McLean Screening Instrument for BPD (MSI-BPD) was developed to identify individuals displaying potential BPD symptoms. This review aims to consolidate the current limited body of research on the MSI-BPD, delving into its origins, the rigor of its validation process, its practicality in clinical settings, and potential applications. By comprehensively examining these aspects, c

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: In Belgium, involuntary psychiatric hospitalization is authorized in the presence of certain criteria governed by the law relating to the protection of the mentally ill. The number of involuntary hospitalizations has been increasing continuously in recent years. Since personality disorders are frequent comorbidities in involuntarily hospitalized patients, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential role played by comorbid personality disorders in the decisions about involuntary hospitalization made during urgent forensic assessment.
METHODS: A total of 565 in

BACKGROUND: The distribution and co-morbidity of common psychiatric disorders can be largely explained as manifestations of two broad psychopathological spectra of internalizing and externalizing disorders. Twin studies suggest that these spectra arise from genetic factors.
METHOD: Structural equation twin modeling was applied to interview and questionnaire data on personality traits and lifetime psychiatric disorders on more than 5300 members of male-male (MM) and female-female (FF) twin pairs.
RESULTS: The best-fitting models for both the externalizing and internalizing spectra differed si

Supreme Court rulings supporting the constitutionality of sexually violent predator (SVP) statutes require that evaluators determine whether the rapist has a mental disorder (which justifies psychiatric commitment) or is just a common criminal (who cannot be preventively detained psychiatrically), but they offer no guidelines on making this crucial distinction. Until recently, state evaluators ignored the crucial fact that rape as a mental disorder has been roundly rejected by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) four times in the past 45 years (in DSM-III, DSM-III-R

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether psychiatric conditions other than depression are relevant in elder patients with memory disturbances.
METHODS: 430 consecutive outpatients (242 males, 188 females; mean age 61.7 years) who visited the Maastricht Memory Clinic were examined, according to a standardised diagnostic procedure, including somatic, neurological, psychiatric and neuropsychological examination. Psychiatric disorders were diagnosed according to DSM-III(-R) criteria.
RESULTS: Of 152 patients with dementia, 34 had a secondary depressive syndrome, 19 another secondary psychiatric disorder.

Anorexia and Bulimia nervosa are common psychiatric disorders in adolescent girls. In discrepancy to ICD-10 and DSM-IV we would propose the 10th BMI percentile as weight criterium for anorexia nervosa. Both disorders have a high somatic and psychiatric comorbidity; the most severe complication at long term follow-up is osteoporosis. The most prevalent psychiatric disorders are affective disorders, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance abuse. There is undoubtedly a genetic predisposition and a range of general and personal environmental risk factors. Treatment of adolescent ea

Because the visibility of homeless persons congregating in urban areas has increased since the 1980's, the relationship between homelessness and mental illness has caused more and more concern. A multitude of epidemiological surveys have been organized in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and mainly in United States, and have attempted to evaluate scientifically the psychiatric morbidity of this population. This literature review reveals disparity of epidemiological methods in assessing the type and extent of mental illness among homeless adults. The lack of consensual definition of homelessne

Sixty patients with personality disorders were evaluated by several different diagnostic instruments to determine the prevalence of cyclothymia in borderline personality disorder (BPD) and in other personality disorders (OPD). Cyclothymia occurred more frequently in BPD than in OPD, regardless of which diagnostic system was used. In contrast, the prevalence of major, minor, and intermittent depression, hypomania, and bipolar disorder was not significantly different in BPD as compared with OPD. Cyclothymic borderlines and noncyclothymic borderlines could not be distinguished on behavioral or fu

The purpose was to assess personality traits in subjects with a DSM-IV diagnosis of social phobia. Thirty-two subjects were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV for Axes I and II disorders (SCID I and II). Personality traits were assessed by means of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP). Current and lifetime axis I co-morbidity was diagnosed in 28% and 53% of the subjects, respectively. In total, 59% had at least one personality disorder and 47% were diagnosed with an avoidant personality disorder. The social phobics scored significantly higher than a Swedish normati

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder is a major risk factor for suicidal behavior, yet prediction of suicide completion remains unclear. It has been proposed that impulsivity and aggression interact to increase suicide risk. Death by suicide in borderline personality disorder, then, may be the result of impulsivity, a core feature of the disorder, interacting with violent-aggressive tendencies. Using a case-control design, this study investigated clinical and behavioral risk factors for suicide completion in borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the experiences of persons with serious mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: Adults with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, or no psychiatric disorder (N=195) were interviewed between July 2020 and January 2021. All were previously enrolled in a cohort study. The interviews focused on mental distress and suicidal thoughts, the impact of the pandemic and pandemic-related worries, tobacco and alcohol use, and access to care. Responses of persons with serious mental illness were compared with responses of those without

The Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder (DSPD) initiative in England and Wales provides specialized care to high-risk offenders with mental disorders. This study investigated the predictive utility of personality traits, assessed using the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) and the International Personality Disorder Examination, with 44 consecutive admissions to the DSPD unit at a high-security forensic psychiatric hospital. Incidents of interpersonal physical aggression (IPA) were observed for 39% of the sample over an average 1.5-year period following admission. Histrionic personali

The various eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, are characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior and are seen as typical "psychosomatic disorders". The subdivision of anorexia nervosa into two subtypes, namely "anorexia nervosa restricting type" and "anorexia nervosa bulimic type" has proved to be very good. It is to be assumed that eating disorders are not a homogeneous group, and that the various subtypes of eating disorders are also heterogeneous at several levels. Co-morbid psychiatric disorders, especially affective disorders, anxiety

Objectives are to examine North Carolina (NC) resident psychiatrists knowledge of commitment statutes and their willingness to involuntarily admit hypothetical patients who do not meet statutory criteria. It is hypothesized that the need for transportation may be a salient factor. In one vignette the patient had schizophrenia and the other alcohol dependence. The respondents were asked to make a decision about commitment and to rate how 9 specified factors affected their decision. Sixty-one residents responded. Thirty percent answered incorrectly about statutory provisions for 'mental illness'

Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a medical condition that is present in approximately 2.5% of adults worldwide and manifests in a variety of different ways across the lifespan. Adults with ADHD often have coexisting psychiatric disorders such as anxiety, mood, sleep, substance use, and personality disorders and are at increased risk for coexisting somatic conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and immune and inflammatory conditions. Hence, such adults may be seen by clinicians providing care for a wide range of psyc

The present article aims to examine premorbid personality traits of psychiatric patients with various diagnoses by asking their close relatives to retrospectively rate the patients' usual self with a questionnaire designed for the five-factor model of personality, a rapidly emerging comprehensive theory of personality structure. Data for 140 patients and 84 controls were analyzed. Although psychiatric patients as a group were characterized by high neuroticism and low conscientiousness when compared with the healthy controls, there were only a few traits that distinguished a particular diagnost

Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to variations in the time intervals between consecutive heart beats. Changes in HRV reflect changes in either sympathetic or decreased parasympathetic tone that can originate in the brain. This brain-heart connection has led to the proposal that HRV may have utility in the diagnosis of psychiatric conditions and/or be a predictor of the response to psychiatric medications. There have been attempts to improve the correlation between HRV and psychological and psychiatric conditions by using artificial intelligence or specific machine learning algorithms. The o
