[Trend in ICD-11 primary health care version--possibility of introducing new psychiatric diagnosis categories].

Revision of ICD-11 will be submitted for approval at the general assembly in 2015. The influence of the ICD revision will be marked in the f … in the ICD-11-PHC draft in comparison with ICD-10-PHC. Anxiety disorders such as neurasthenia, and phobic disorders and panic disorder have been deleted. On the other hand, new diagnostic categories such as autistic spectrum disorder, PTSD, and personality disorder have been introduced. Furthermore, name changes such as anxious depression, bodily stress syndrome, …

Posttraumatic embitterment disorder.

BACKGROUND: Adjustment and reactive disorders are a heterogeneous group of mental disorders. Diagnostic criteria are vague and scientific research is limited despite the fact that these disorders play a major role in clinical practice. METHODS: The 'posttraumatic embitterment disorder' (PTED) is introduced as a new concept for a subgroup of adjustment disorders. A case vignette and diagnostic criteria are presented. RESULTS: Core criteria of PTED are: (1) a single exceptional negative life event precipitates the onset of the illness; (2) the present negative state developped in the direct co

An investigation into the psychobiology of social phobia: personality domains and serotonergic function.

The aim of the present study was to explore a psychobiological perspective in the aetiology of social phobia. The emphasis was on serotonergic function and personality. A total of 20 social phobics according to ICD-10 DCR criteria were assessed with the Schedule for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry and the International Personality Disorder Examination. They were compared with an age-matched normal population with regard to scores on the Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale, the Social Avoidance and Distress Scale, the Temperament and Character Inventory, and platelet 5HT2 receptor function

Alprazolam, imipramine and placebo treatment of panic disorder: predicting therapeutic response.

Factors that predicted the outcome of drug treatment (alprazolam or imipramine) of panic disorder were studied in a sample of 123 Scandinavian patients participating in a multicenter placebo-controlled 8-week trial. The attrition rate was 95% for alprazolam, 73% for imipramine and 46% for placebo. For the intention-to-treat and 3-week-completer samples, drugs and anxiety symptoms at baseline were the best predictors of improvement on the Global Improvement Scale and on symptom scales focusing on panic attacks, phobic behavior and anticipatory anxiety. For completers of the 8-week trial, only b

Anxiety disorders and onset of cardiovascular disease: the differential impact of panic, phobias and worry.

Anxiety has been linked to onset of cardiovascular disease. This study examines the differential impact of types of anxiety (panic, phobia and worry) on 3-year onset of non-fatal cardiovascular disease (CVD). By investigating anxiety disorders as opposed to anxiety symptoms and by using a reliable diagnostic instrument to assess anxiety, limitations of previous studies are considered. 5149 persons at risk for CVD were interviewed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview. The panic-type included panic disorder and panic attacks; the phobic-type included agoraphobia and social phob

Neural time course of threat-related attentional bias and interference in panic and obsessive-compulsive disorders.

Attentional biases to threat are considered central to anxiety disorders, however physiological evidence of their nature and time course is lacking. Event-related potentials (ERPs) characterized sensory and cognitive changes while 20 outpatients with panic disorder (PD), 20 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and 20 healthy controls (HCs) responded to the color (emotional Stroop task) or meaning of threatening and neutral stimuli. ERPs indicated larger P1 amplitude and longer N1 latency in OCD, and shorter P1 latency in PD, to threatening (versus neutral) stimuli, across instructions to

Long-term course and outcome in panic disorder: a naturalistic follow-up study.

Fifty-five of 102 consecutively evaluated patients with panic disorder seen in consultation at a specialty anxiety and mood disorders clinic were reinterviewed from 15 to 60 months later after naturalistic treatment in the community. Over the follow-up period, most patients displayed improvement in panic attack frequency and severity, phobic avoidance, depression, and major role functioning, although only five (10%) were asymptomatic on all measures at follow-up. The majority of patients with impaired interpersonal functioning showed no improvement on this measure. Thirty percent of the patien

Studies of the c-Harvey-Ras gene in psychiatric disorders.

Hérault et al. (1993) previously reported a significant association between autism and the larger fragments of the c-Harvey-Ras (HRAS) Bam H1 polymorphism. We have sought to verify this finding and determine if there was any evidence for an association with other psychiatric disorders. Because of its greater sensitivity, we have examined the HRAS Msp 1 polymorphism. We found a just significant increase in the prevalence of the > 2.1 kb alleles in 48 subjects with autism versus 50 control subjects. There was no increase in the prevalence of the > 2.1 kb alleles in 164 probands with Tourette's s

The Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and obsessional disorder.

Georges Gilles de la Tourette first drew attention to the psychopathology of the Gilles de la Tourette Syndrome (GTS) in 1889 when he commented on the anxieties and phobias of his patients. In this paper he acknowledged the contribution of Guinon, who in 1886 had noted that "tiquers" nearly always had associated psychiatric disorders characterised by multiple phobias, arithmomania and agoraphobia. Since that time many types of psychopathology have been documented in association with GTS, including depression, anxiety, phobic disorder, hostility and aggression. However, the exact association be

Eating disorders in women.

Eating disorders, especially anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa have been classically described in young females in Western population. Recent research shows that they are also seen in developing countries including India. The classification of eating disorders has been expanded to include recently described conditions like binge eating disorder. Eating disorders have a multifactorial etiology. Genetic factor appear to play a major role. Recent advances in neurobiology have improved our understanding of these conditions and may possibly help us develop more effective treatments in future. Psychiatric disorders among drug dependent subjects: are they primary or secondary?

The relationship between substance use disorders and comorbid psychiatric conditions was investigated among 425 persons in drug treatment who met DSM-III-R criteria for drug dependence. Using the NIMH Diagnostic Interview Schedule to ascertain DSM-III-R psychiatric disorders among these drug dependent subjects, lifetime prevalence rates were 64% for alcohol abuse/dependence, 44% for antisocial personality disorder, 39% for phobic disorders, 24% for major depression, 12% for dysthymia, and 10% for generalized anxiety disorder. We found that antisocial personality disorder and phobias generally …

[Montreal syndrome: Conophobia].

The objective of this perspective article is to explore the creation of a new syndrome specific to the Canadian city of Montreal: Conophobia. In a more academic way, the aim is to think about the process which leads to the creation of a new clinical entity and to question how the name of a disease is chosen. In the literature, it is illustrated by syndromes with a name of a city: Stockholm syndrome, Stendhal syndrome, Pisa syndrome, Havana syndrome, Paris syndrome, Lima syndrome or Copenhagen syndrome. Conophobia is a neologism reflecting a potential syndrome linked to the growing observation

Evolutionary psychology of entomophobia and its implications for insect conservation.

Many people, especially those living in developed countries, exhibit irrational negative feelings (e.g. fear, disgust, and aversion) toward insects. This so-called 'entomophobia' has often been suggested as a key contributing factor to the ongoing global decline in insects. However, this topic has not been well-investigated. From this point of view, we discuss the formation processes of entomophobia and its consequences from an evolutionary psychological perspective. Adopting the concept of the behavioral immune system, we suggest that the negative responses toward insects exhibited by modern

Short report: coaching as an intervention to treat mild form of fear of flying.

Fear of flying can lead to restrictions in private but also in professional life. Different treatment approaches are available to handle fear of flying. Of these, coaching could be one possible treatment method. However, evidence is rare and the aim of this study was to evaluate descriptive effect of wingwave® coaching on a mild form of fear of flying. Coaching was delivered twice before the first flight and once after the first flight. The interventions were conducted between December 2016 and May 2017. Four people with fear of flying participated in the study. As measurement tools, satisfact

The functional value of preventive and restorative safety behaviors: A systematic review of the literature.

Safety behaviors are unnecessary actions used to prevent, escape from, or reduce the severity of a perceived threat. Most cognitive-behavioral theorists posit that the use of safety behaviors during exposure is maladaptive because they interfere with fear reduction. However, there is growing evidence suggesting that the use of safety behaviors can facilitate exposure. In general, the findings are mixed as to whether safety behaviors should be made available during exposure-based interventions. The aim of the current review was to evaluate whether safety behaviors should be made accessible duri
